Did you know that arcade cabinets with CRT monitors actually had three different resolutions? Most classic 2D arcade games used a 15kHz (320×240) resolution. This was the same resolution commonly used by CRT TVs and many 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit home consoles. Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. Later cabinets like Blast City, Net City, and New Net City were known as “3-mode” cabinets because they supported all three resolutions. The tricky part is that both the game board and the arcade cabinet itself can have resolution settings. If the settings are wrong, you can end up running a high-resolution game in low resolution. Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. Happy birthday, Bubble Bobble! It was released exactly 40 years ago today, on June 16, 1986. The arcade version was absolutely brilliant, being one of the first games to have a coop-multiplayer option. It was also one of the the most ported arcade games in history, with over 20 ports to home computers and consoles, including even the legendary TI-84 Plus (primarily a calculator). The port that got the highest praise and came closest to the original arcade experience was the C64 version. Excellent graphics, one of the most recognizable tunes , and great gameplay make Bubble Bobble a timeless classic. My brother and I played the crap out of this one back in the day, and we still load it up on my old C64 when he comes for a visit. It's like riding a bike, you never forget how to play Bubble Bobble.

You can also 'possess' certain enemy characters and use their own move set, which is quite unique in this genre. A hidden gem that was never ported to home systems.

Let me introduce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (arcade game), a game I had an absolute blast playing in arcades when I was a kid. Back then, Konami was making a lot of belt-scrolling action games using various IPs, and this title was a huge hit. It was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the arcade feel was recreated surprisingly well, which made it very popular. Even today, it’s still incredibly fun to play 👌

It was the first arcade cabinet with a steering wheel featuring force feedback to mimic road surfaces, plus pedals and a gear shift. It was also the first to let players choose from three synth-pop tracks (Magical Sound Shower, Passing Breeze, and Splash Wave) via an in-game radio to personalize the vibe. It simulated real Ferrari Testarossa traits (horsepower, torque, and gears) and allowed skillful drifting - or bad drifting, in my case. The road would fork (left/right) at certain intervals, also a first for its type, giving the player choice and making it more interactive. Out Run ultimately became Sega's top-selling arcade game in 1987.

It was the first to introduce and popularize the "behind the car" third-person perspective, which became the industry standard for racing games ever since. Pretty wild - at least from today's perspective - to see ads from global brands like Marlboro, Martini or Pepsi in an arcade game. But then again, you could also smoke on commercial flights and nobody would tell you "sugar is bad" when you had a Pepsi as a little kid. The 80s were different. Pole Position became the #1 arcade game in terms of gross revenue in 1983 and even remained among the top earners when Pole Position II was released.

Lately I’ve been working on sci-fi styles with a retrofuturistic, industrial, post-human aesthetic. I develop the concept art in Midjourney and then animate it with Grok Imagine, which, with the right prompts (not easy), works really well, with that procedural and melancholic feel. Then I create music in Suno to match that atmosphere, and well, judge for yourselves, but I absolutely love this.

I’ve been playing games since the ’80s, but the most shocking graphics I ever experienced had to be Daytona USA. Running on Sega’s Model 2 hardware with smooth 60fps and high-resolution visuals — I didn’t know the specs back then, but I could instantly tell it looked on a completely different level from other games. And that iconic “Let’s go away!” from the opening? One line and I’m right back in the arcade. Daytona USA 2 was great too, but somehow I still prefer the original’s unique speed and atmosphere. Pretty sure everyone tried this at the arcade at least once, right? 🎮
