Galaxy Force II for arcade (Sega/1988). Another AM2 technical marvel in its original arcade form, with smooth sprite-scaling and dynamic music. Basically After Burner in space, with different planets and sci-fi tropes. None of the home ports back then were able to hold a candle, and the arcade also... show more

Did you know that arcade cabinets with CRT monitors actually had three different resolutions? Most classic 2D arcade games used a 15kHz (320×240) resolution. This was the same resolution commonly used by CRT TVs and many 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit home consoles. Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. Later cabinets like Blast City, Net City, and New Net City were known as “3-mode” cabinets because they supported all three resolutions. The tricky part is that both the game board and the arcade cabinet itself can have resolution settings. If the settings are wrong, you can end up running a high-resolution game in low resolution. So if you’re buying an arcade cabinet, make sure you carefully check which resolutions it supports.

One of Sega’s greatest strengths in the 1990s was its ability to create arcade games using 3D hardware that completely outclassed the competition. Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter were developed on the Model 1 arcade system, which was based on advanced 3D technology originally developed for military applications. At the time, their performance was so impressive that other 3D games simply couldn’t compare. Because of that, it was extremely difficult to accurately reproduce these games on home consoles. In the early 1990s, the Model 1 arcade hardware cost close to $7,000, and even Sega’s own systems—the Mega Drive, 32X, and later the Sega Saturn—struggled to deliver arcade-perfect versions. Back then, I was disappointed by the gap in quality between the arcade and home versions. Looking back now, though, it’s amazing that Sega managed to port them as well as they did. It almost feels like a miracle. After eventually buying an arcade cabinet and a Model 1 board, I learned something I hadn’t realized before: Model 1 supported high-resolution monitors, unlike the standard displays used by most home systems. In those days, the average gamer didn’t even think about screen resolution, so seeing Virtua Fighter on a high-resolution arcade monitor created a fundamentally different experience from the home versions. When I first played Virtua Fighter on the Sega Saturn, I remember feeling that something was missing. At the time, I assumed it was simply the lower polygon count, but after seeing the original hardware in action, I realized that the difference in resolution also played a huge role. Sega’s arcade games—especially those built on the Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3 platforms—represent the peak of the company’s technological achievements. That’s one of the reasons I enjoy collecting them so much. Since home console conversions could never fully capture the original experience, the authentic arcade versions have a unique charm that’s hard to replicate. Even today, playing them on the original hardware is a great reminder of why Sega was considered the king of arcade gaming during the 1990s.

The Amiga port of Pang (aka Buster Bros.), published by Ocean Software in 1990, is considered a spot-on arcade conversion and one of the finest arcade ports on the platform, receiving critical scores of 90% and higher. With its simple mechanics and relatively reduced scope, it was possible to adequately fit in the extremely tight deadlines of the computer niche, and coupled with the technical skill of the Ocean France development team, delivering a compelling result. Not only on the Amiga, but also on other classic computers of the era.

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker for the arcade (Sega/1990). Isometric action game where players control Michael Jackson using magic beam attacks and signature dance moves to defeat enemies. Has charge shot and a clear screen bomb where enemies dance before dying. With great renditions of MJ's music. Mega Drive and Master System home versions are completely different/another game.

After Burner, Sega’s 1987 arcade shooter, felt like a ride rather than a cabinet. Yu Suzuki’s team put an F-14-style jet on the Super Scaler hardware that had already powered Space Harrier, Hang-On, and Out Run, so the ground, clouds, and enemy planes scaled toward you at a speed (and level of detail) home computers could not match. And then, of course, there was the famous deluxe cockpit version. It was not a fixed chair but pitched forward and back and rolled side to side with the jet, and it had a seatbelt so you stayed in it. Lock-on missiles, a throttle, and a canyon run made After Burner feel like a movie. Top Gun was released the year prior, and mesmerized teenage boys all over the world. Feeling like Maverick for a few minutes was exactly what After Burner made possible. What a game!

Out Run (1986) by Sega wasn’t built as a traditional racing game, but as a “driving experience” by Yu Suzuki. Instead of laps or opponents, the focus was on freedom, letting players choose branching routes across multiple stages, each with different scenery, traffic patterns, and difficulty, leading to several possible endings. Technically, it was powered by Sega’s Super Scaler hardware, allowing smooth sprite scaling that created a real sense of speed, something few games at the time could match. The deluxe cabinet took it even further, physically tilting and moving with the road, turning it into a full-on arcade attraction. Its soundtrack by Hiroshi Kawaguchi was just as groundbreaking, giving players a choice of radio stations like “Magical Sound Shower,” helping define the game’s laid-back, road trip vibe. That mix of tech, music, and design is why Out Run is still seen as one of the most influential arcade racers ever made.

Maybe inspired by the synergy between the PlayStation and Namco’s arcade-compatible hardware, Sega also developed the Dreamcast and NAOMI together to make arcade-to-console ports much easier for their own games. Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.

Dragon Breed for arcade (Irem/1989). Horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game with a unique gameplay twist where you ride an invincible dragon while your human character remains vulnerable. The dragon features a charge shot similar to Irem's classic R-Type. Was popular and ported to many home computers back then, and also available on Irem Collection Volume 3 (Switch, PS4 and 5, Xbox Series X/S & Xbox One).

Happy birthday, Bubble Bobble! It was released exactly 40 years ago today, on June 16, 1986. The arcade version was absolutely brilliant, being one of the first games to have a coop-multiplayer option. It was also one of the the most ported arcade games in history, with over 20 ports to home computers and consoles, including even the legendary TI-84 Plus (primarily a calculator). The port that got the highest praise and came closest to the original arcade experience was the C64 version. Excellent graphics, one of the most recognizable tunes , and great gameplay make Bubble Bobble a timeless classic. My brother and I played the crap out of this one back in the day, and we still load it up on my old C64 when he comes for a visit. It's like riding a bike, you never forget how to play Bubble Bobble.

Created with Seedance2.5 I asked AI to recreate the kind of arcade racing game we all wish actually existed in 1998. NEON STREET RACER '98 feels like a forgotten classic pulled straight from an old CRT arcade cabinet — low-poly cars, neon streets, split-screen multiplayer, and a 0.003-second photo finish. Honestly… would you have played this back in '98?

Top Gun fever met Sega arcade magic. In 1987 Sega released After Burner, a high-speed rail shooter that put players in the cockpit of an F-14 Tomcat. Designed by Yu Suzuki’s Studio 128 team, the game drew direct inspiration from the 1986 film Top Gun and placed the iconic swing-wing fighter at the center of the action. Players flew a third-person view of the Tomcat through 18 stages, blasting enemy aircraft with a rapid-fire Vulcan cannon and a limited supply of heat-seeking missiles. The arcade cabinet’s hydraulic motion and Super Scaler graphics made the high-G turns and afterburner runs feel intense. An upgraded version, After Burner II, arrived months later with throttle control and more stages. The game became a worldwide hit and one of the defining arcade experiences of the late 1980s. For many players it was their first close encounter with the F-14, turning the real Navy interceptor into a pixelated superstar long before Top Gun: Maverick revived the jet’s fame.

Exactly four decades ago, an absolute legend of gaming history was released - happy 40th birthday, Out Run! Developed by Sega and released on September 14, 1986, Out Run introduced several new features at the time. It was the first arcade cabinet with a steering wheel featuring force feedback to mimic road surfaces, plus pedals and a gear shift. For a little kid, this was beyond epic. It was also the first to let players choose from three synth-pop tracks (Magical Sound Shower, Passing Breeze, and Splash Wave) via an in-game radio to personalize the vibe. It simulated real Ferrari Testarossa traits (horsepower, torque, and gears) and allowed skillful drifting - or bad drifting, in my case. Another cool fetaure (a "choose your own adventure" if you will) was the forked road at certain intervals, giving the player a choice and making it more "interactive." Out Run topped the arcade charts and ultimately became Sega's #1 selling arcade game in 1987.

Shadow Force for the arcade (Technōs/1993). Beat 'em up with complex combat mechanics (6 buttons, with tons of moves, and can even block enemy attacks). You can also 'possess' certain enemy characters and use their own move set, which is quite unique in this genre. A hidden gem that was never ported to home systems.

Let me introduce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (arcade game), a game I had an absolute blast playing in arcades when I was a kid. Back then, Konami was making a lot of belt-scrolling action games using various IPs, and this title was a huge hit. It was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the arcade feel was recreated surprisingly well, which made it very popular. Even today, it’s still incredibly fun to play 👌
