Gary Oldman won his only Oscar in 2018 for his performance as Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour. A lot of you seem to be really comfortable shitting on this performance or pretending like it wasn’t worthy of an Oscar. Oldman is utterly excellent in this film- a masterclass.

I reviewed The Brink of War (🌟🌟) in detail below - which I hope you indulge - but Jeff Daniels’ misfire as Ronald Reagan reminded me how rare & how important a truly great biopic performance can be, such as Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour. These political dramas/biopics rest heavily on the performance from its main character. Daniels fails where Oldman succeeded & it’s one reason The Brink of War won’t be remembered.

Mississippi Burning is a great, great way to spend a Sunday morning if you need a film to watch. This is available on demand & it features Gene Hackman & Frances McDormand in Oscar-nominated performances, as well as a great performance from Willem Dafoe. Hell, this film earned a boat-load of Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It’s excellent and worth your time.

I didn’t initially love The Book of Eli when I first saw it in theaters, but after a few rewatches, I’ve really grown to appreciate Denzel Washington’s performance in this film. You start to see why Denzel took this role after multiple viewings. Gary Oldman is also fantastic here

Tender Mercies won Robert Duvall his only #Oscar. This movie means so much to me because of Duvall’s performance. He’s brilliant. Duvall cuts open his heart & lays it on the table for the audience to see. He could not be better in this film. Duvall cared. He will be missed. RIP.

Michael Douglas won the Oscar for Best Actor for his iconic performance as Gordon Gekko in Oliver Stone’s 1987 film Wall Street, a commentary on the unhinged financial system taking over America. Douglas is so unbelievable in this movie & I always return to this because of his performance. I don’t think Douglas gets the credit he deserves for his raw talent as an actor. He also has an upcoming memoir that I intend to read & review on this here app.

Regardless of whether Jack Lowden becomes James Bond or not, I think he leaves this entire process as the biggest winner. It pleases me that Lowden is receiving heighten notoriety right now because I firmly believe Lowden should already be a quasi-household name based on his performance as River Cartwright across six seasons on Slow Horses. Lowden has clearly learned a lot from Oscar-winner Gary Oldman throughout the course of shooting this show. He’s a tremendous actor. Whether he’s anointed 007 or not, this entire campaign will elevate his profile.

The Color of Money finally won Paul Newman an Oscar and while many people criticize the win as a lifetime achievement award, I genuinely think Newman deserved the award.
