VIDEO | Delhi: At the E20 ethanol-petrol blended programme, experts Vartika Shukla says, "It is pertinent to note that since E20 ethanol has about 80% of gasoline which is fossil fuel. The main characteristic of the fuel is still fossil based which is gasoline. The specifications are well structured in terms of its compliance to BIS standard IS 17021 published in 2018. Again, these standards are a result of a dialogue between various scientific agencies, experts and extensive testing. And all ethanol-based gasoline, E20 gasoline which is spread across the country now in all retail outlets, 77,000 plus of them across the country, have uniformly adopted the specifications, which is compliant to meeting the, emission standards for BS6 as well as several other specifications which regulate the engine performance in terms of higher RON, compliant sulfur and water content which is, compliant to meeting the requirement of engine performance.This is a summary of the few points of the E20 program of the Government of India, which is now made us less reliant on 100% import of crude towards production of gasoline. #WATCH | Delhi: On ethanol, Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice President (Corporate Affairs and Governance) of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, says, "...I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about the fuel. For example, if you look at it from the automotive sector, there is a lot of myth that if you use E20 blended fuel, vehicles will get damaged. It's a myth. It doesn't happen this way. There's a lot of myth about the amount of mileage loss or the fuel efficiency loss. Yes, there is some fuel efficiency loss, no doubt. But it is not so big as it is being made out to be...E85 and E100, that is, 85% ethanol and 100 % ethanol, are not meant for regular cars. It is meant for a different type of technology, which is called a flex fuel vehicle. This vehicle can take any mix of ethanol. So people need not worry. E20 is the standard fuel that will be available, and it is compatible with old vehicles and new vehicles. All vehicles sold after 1st of April 2023 are fully materially compliant with E20. And people need to be reassured that in 2021, before we went into E20, there was a very detailed scientific study done by the leading automobile testing agency in the country, which is ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). It clearly established that the possible damage to cars and two wheelers which are old is not there. It's very insignificant. And it also established that the fuel efficiency loss is to the extent of 2 to 4 per cent, not significant." On ethanol, he says, "As per the latest statistics from the government, the program so far has helped save 1.9 trillion rupees. Out of that, 1,60,000 crores has gone to farmers. So in the case of India, it's not only helped us to in some way mitigate the energy crisis, but it's also helped us to help the farmers...The reason why not just India, but many other countries are doing it is for energy security, for the agrarian economy, as well as for fighting climate change and environmental purposes."

Did a simple ethanol check myself yesterday! Watch it till the end! Took 170 mL of E20 petrol, added 20 mL of water, shook it well, and after the layers separated, the water/ethanol layer measured 40 mL. That suggests roughly 20 mL of ethanol in 170 mL of fuel around 11.8% ethanol (roughly E12), not E20. If my calculations are correct, then I have a genuine question: has the ethanol content quietly been reduced from E20 to E12 temporarily because of a widespread backlash? or is there another explanation for these results? Either way, this also shows how readily ethanol attracts water and what moisture inside a fuel tank can potentially do over time. Happy to be corrected if my calculations or the test method are wrong!! ☺️

E20 fuel began to be supplied fully from October–November 2025, and from 1 April 2026 the government made it mandatory for private players and all oil companies to sell only E20. Since the notification, some people have raised psychological concerns, often posting on social media without evidence. At our own petrol pumps, none of the customers’ vehicles has shown any problems with E20. Those posting online also have no proof that E20 damages engines. Yes, three institutions produced reports on the long-term effects of E20, suggesting that older vehicles might experience problems, particularly on rubber parts.
