H.E.R.O. (Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation) for the Atari 2600. Classic action-puzzler published by Activision in 1984. A technical marvel for the Atari 2600 due to its depth, varied mechanics, and engaging gameplay loop. Was called also a 'hidden gem', which is funny because it was everywhere, second only to...

Richard Langford (who else?) remade the ZX Spectrum version for Windows, and it looks good

Way better than Pitfall IMHO...

It ends! Which is surprising for Atari 2600. At 1 million points, the game ends, with exclamation marks on the score. And the word PRO appears after level 20.

Activision, Imajic and Atari themselves were kind of the only devs on the 2600 making great stuff. This game's impressive as hell, basically a proto-Pitfall II

I think technically one of the best 2600 game is Pitfall 2. It has a hardware accelerated cartridge. H.E.R.O, Pitfall and River Raid all of them from Activision!

Absolutely! Pitfall 2 blew my mind. He can swim! He can grab a ride in a balloon! It was a blast for a kid back then.

Pitfall II on the Atari 2600 bypassed the console's limits by putting a custom coprocessor called the DPC (Display Processor Chip) directly inside the game cartridge. This hardware addition provided two extra sound channels, a music sequencer, and bitmap graphics streaming!

Fun game! I had a really bad habit of walking into those killer walls, though.

H.E.R.O. and River Raid - what a combo! Played it for hours on my Atari 800XL and Atari 130XE machines as well as on @batocera_linux on @Raspberry_Pi.

I also played the MSX version later. H.E.R.O., Pitfall 2 and River Raid were the Activision Atari 2600 games that I remember the MSX versions (they are good).

H.E.R.O. really was punching above the 2600's weight, that lava-cave descent still holds up

Wow. I never even knew about this. I could have really used this back in the day as a break from that horrible port of Pac-Man, or ET, or Tennis...

It's utterly amazing that they fully implemented this one on the 2600! I first played the Colecovision version.

Those damned levels where you hit the light entering and had to steer to the exit only by the light of your lazer... Great memories.

This really reminds me of Spelunker. Funny enough, Spelunker actually came first!
