Ever since I bought an arcade cabinet, I’ve become really interested in arcade games. Similar to console games, you can buy arcade game PCBs and run them by connecting them directly. Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.

The reason I got into game collecting was the Neo Geo MVS arcade system. Around 2005, I came across an arcade game community where modders gathered—people who converted arcade games so they could be played at home on consoles. While being active in that community for a long time, I started collecting MVS games one by one. Eventually, that expanded into collecting console systems, PC games, and later even full arcade cabinets. I also began collecting Neo Geo AES from that time. Although I collect many kinds of games, the Neo Geo series is especially meaningful to me.

The X68000 was one of the best home computers for enjoying classic Konami and Capcom arcade games. Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

Blue Max (1983) was developed by Bob Polin and published by Synapse Software for Atari 8-bit computers and Commodore 64. You control a World War I plane in an isometric view (those of you who played Zaxxon will feel familiar with the perspective), flying over rivers, roads, and enemy territory. The goal is to bomb ground targets, strafe enemies, and ultimately destroy the enemy headquarters while surviving anti-aircraft fire and dogfights. For 1983 the graphics were absoluetly top notch, and so were the music and effects. Isometric perspectives were not common for early 80s games, and the altitude and timing when you dropped the bombs really mattered. Another one of those early 80s games that were developed by a single person - Polin created the original Atari version, Adams did the C64 port - I find that remarkable. Speaking of remarkable: The game's total size was 20 KB, less than an average desktop icon on your PC.

Happy birthday, Bubble Bobble! It was released exactly 40 years ago today, on June 16, 1986. The arcade version was absolutely brilliant, being one of the first games to have a coop-multiplayer option. It was also one of the the most ported arcade games in history, with over 20 ports to home computers and consoles, including even the legendary TI-84 Plus (primarily a calculator). The port that got the highest praise and came closest to the original arcade experience was the C64 version. Excellent graphics, one of the most recognizable tunes , and great gameplay make Bubble Bobble a timeless classic. My brother and I played the crap out of this one back in the day, and we still load it up on my old C64 when he comes for a visit. It's like riding a bike, you never forget how to play Bubble Bobble.

Phoenix (1980) was one of the very first games (if not THE first) that included a "boss fight", with the giant mothership at the end, before the next wave started. Games before it simply didn't have a "boss" but kept going on endlessly - repeating the same pattern, just getting tougher/faster. While avoiding the dive-bombing birds and shots from the mothership, you had to blast your way through its underbelly (shield) to reach the center piece and nuke it - all while it slowly dropped lower and closed the distance on you. Could turn into quite a frantic showdown... Another cool feature where the unhatched birds, which then turned into fully grown ones - and you better hit those dead center and not clip a wing... though it was always a bit funny to see them losing both wings and just be a floating body, lol. An absolute staple of classic arcade gaming - yet the developer of Phoenix is a mystery, he remains unknown to this day.

I went through a list of games he was credited for, not just by name (his name power alone sold later games he had little active involvement with). It's an incredible list of some of the best games of the 80s and 90s, but Pirates! was the first to include "Sid Meier" in its title as an effort by MicroProse to attract fans of his earlier games. It's an open-world, open-ended game, quite novel for its time. You choose loyalty to one of four nations (Kingdom of England, Dutch Republic, French Colonial Empire, or Spanish Empire) - changeable throughout the game, or go full rogue as a pirate! You battle other ships, duel captains mano a mano, invade towns, hunt treasure, and trade. My fondest memory: a gigantic map my brother and I drew, pinning roughly 20 A4 (letter) papers for a detailed coastline overview. Took many days, and a perfect example an era when games fully immersed you.

Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.

Phoenix (1980, Taito) was one of the very first arcade games to feature a proper boss fight, and what a massive boss it was! At the end of each stage, you faced a huge alien mothership. While dodging dive-bombing birds and the ship’s incoming fire, you had to blast through its heavily shielded underbelly section by section until you could finally reach the core and destroy it. All the while, the giant mothership slowly descended toward you, turning the whole encounter into a pretty tense showdown. Another brilliant touch was the unhatched eggs that would hatch into full-grown birds mid-stage. You quickly learned to hit them dead center - clipping just a wing often left them as a hilarious, wingless floating body drifting across the screen in a rather unorthodox flight pattern. Phoenix, alongside Galaga, Defender, Tempest, Dig Dug, Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Gauntlet, perfectly captures why the late 70s and early 80s remain one of the greatest eras in arcade gaming history. It's a time I often miss.

Back in the ‘90s, there was one arcade game you were almost guaranteed to find: Irem’s Ninja Baseball Bat Man. It was incredibly fun, and with support for up to four players, it was one of the best games to enjoy with friends. But did you know this? While the game was a huge hit in South Korea, it received a fairly lukewarm response in Japan and was released in very limited numbers in North America, making it virtually unknown there. Pretty strange, isn’t it? One of the reasons I loved this game was that, unlike most Irem titles, it wasn’t brutally difficult. You could have a great time with just a single credit. Most Irem games were known for their gritty atmosphere, incredibly detailed pixel art, and punishing difficulty. This one, however, stood out with its bright colors and cute, round character designs, giving it a completely different feel. If you’ve never played it before, do yourself a favor and try it on an emulator.

My family couldn’t afford buying brand new games and consoles. My first PlayStation game was a used Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions by HIDEO_KOJIMA that came with a used PlayStation that my Mother was able to afford for me as a gift. That game changed it all for me and shot me into a trajectory of gaming I would have never been on if there was no used consoles and games. I’m thankful for it Imagine now, with digital only games. The young generation of gamers will never have this experience and never be able to afford a used game.
