Peter and Brutus are on a very special mission. They're giving new rescue Richard (an orphaned eland) his afternoon bottle – and helping him settle in the process! After rescuing an orphan, we typically give them a spell of 'stable rest' so they can recover in peace and learn to trust their new family. From fragile to flourishing — it’s hard to believe how far Toto has come. When he was rescued - brought to us in Ithumba by some of our ex-orphans! - Toto was frightened and alone. He arrived at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery in poor condition, requiring round-the-clock care, but even then with a big personality! Today, he’s one of the most steady and nurturing elephants in our little Kaluku herd — with a big soft spot for his pseudo elephant sister 'Korbessa'. Keeper Peter has a rather zealous support team! His sidekicks and shadows, orphaned zebras Brutus and Bombi, take their devotion to the next level – keep an eye out for Bombi holding Peter’s hand, the zebra way! When a new orphan arrives, our ex-orphans come home. In September 2022, we made an unusual call: we sent our newest rescue – a two-year-old orphan of drought – straight to our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit, bypassing the Nursery. Daylight was running out, Umani was close to his place of reintegration, and we thought the older orphans would be a good fit for him. Our ex-orphan Lima Lima had been away in the forest for three days, yet somehow she still knew... the day Kapei arrived, she walked straight up to his stockade and demanded the Keepers let her in. She spent hours with him, sharing his lucerne, before slipping back out. That formative moment set the tone for Kapei's recovery – from then on, he always knew he had a herd behind him. More recently, he has started to join them in the wild too, spending multiple days away from his Keepers at a time. By adopting, you can welcome an orphaned elephant, rhino or giraffe into your heart, and help fund the milk and Keeper care they need to return to the wild:

Twiggy has really taken the ostrich twins under her wing! Our lovely, leggy giraffe is a great friend to all the orphans, but she has been going out of her way to spend time with Bam and Boozle. Seeing how comfortable Boozle is resting in her presence here, the feeling is clearly mutual. Twiggy and Boozle are two members of our eclectic, beloved orphan herd. While we are best known for raising orphaned elephants and rhinos, we offer a family and a wild future to any creature in need. Today, we remember Richard Bresler, a jiu-jitsu pioneer and our father's first student in California. His legacy extends far beyond his achievements in the art. During one of our hospital visits, Richard shared this story of a chance encounter at Whole Foods with our mother. He explained that after commenting on the Gracie hoodie she was wearing, our mom took the hoodie off and gave it to him without hesitation, a gesture that resonated deeply with him. This heartfelt moment reflected her eternal gratitude for his tireless support of our family. In this spirit, Richard was allowed any merch from GU, any time, at no cost, and we never knew how much that meant to him until this day. We love you Richard. Your sacrifice and support will be cherished and remembered forever.

A breakfast of champions. Juni was rescued in May 2022 from the reeds at the edge of Lake Jipe, around three years old. Save the Elephants heard the rustling first; our pilot flew over to confirm there were no other elephants in the area and Kenya Wildlife Service greenlit a rescue. She was a drought orphan with an advanced urinary tract infection. Six weeks of recovery later, Juni walked out among our Voi herd of orphaned elephants as if she'd always been one of the family. And like all families, they have their meals together. This one? A breakfast of lucerne pellets, an important dietary supplement for the older orphans – particularly during drier periods, when browse is less readily available. One day, when she's ready Juni will hear the call of the wild. When that happens, we'll still watch over her, but instead of our Keepers, it'll be our pilots and rangers instead. This is Richard Abraham... One of the students that represented Aguata Zone at the state level during the Governor's Debate of 2021. Richard was one of the best speakers that they gave him the title of an "Honourable". This title was given to him by His Excellency Willie Obiano before he stepped down as the governor of Anambra State. He speaks so well and his accent is on another level. Such a bright and promising young guy. Our school was knocked out at the state level and we all felt bad. I lost my Mom in 2022 and somehow I lost communication with Richard. All efforts to reach him proved abortive. Recently, someone told me about him... Little did I know he was running from the world that failed him. I finally caught him around Federal Polytechnic Oko last week we were able to meet this morning. Richard was orphaned immediately after our Debate. Coming from a polygamous home, his half-siblings threw him out because they didn't support their father marrying his Mom. He did not write his WASSCE when his mates did in 2022 because there was no one to support him. He slept in uncompleted buildings living in odd jobs just to survive. One spectacular thing was he didn't turn to delinquent means which could have been the easiest step. He has held on. I covered my conversation with him... Please hear from the horse's mouth. I am soliciting for help towards Richard. He needs to write his O'levels. He needs to understand and life has not giving up on him. Seeing such a rare talent wasting away in the slums is heartbreaking. Please reach out in any possible way... Let him us prove to Richard that it is not over.... This is especially true at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery in Tsavo, where an unlikely family has taken shape. There’s Twiggy the giraffe, who has appointed herself the unofficial nanny of the herd and likes to keep tabs on everyone, both human and animal. Bombi the zebra likes to 'supervise' veterinary operations at the airstrip, and Bibi the buffalo is growing up alongside them, learning the rhythms of the bush. Antelope of all sizes are cared for by Keeper Peter, and then there's Chamboi, our quirky young black rhino who arrived as a newborn. He lets out high-pitched squeaks when his milk is being prepared, an uncharacteristic but unmistakable rhino sound that means 'hurry up!' When an orphan chooses life, we know they've turned a corner. And behind this choice is often a Keeper. They are the reason orphaned elephants heal – not just physically, but in the ways that matter most. Elephants are extraordinary readers of people.
