Huawei has officially launched the MateBook Pro S with a new Mechanical Privacy Display. 👀 Huawei says it's a hardware-based privacy display that reduces side-angle visibility to help keep your screen private in public. Based on Huawei's demo, it appears to use a hardware optical approach to narrow the...

TL;DR - Privacy on public blockchains has historically been fragmented and episodic. Umbra introduces persistent, expressive privacy by default. - Umbra is a private financial layer on Solana, enabling private transfers, swaps, balances, and yield within a continuous shielded environment. - Umbra combines client-side zero-knowledge proofs for anonymity with MPC for confidentiality - MPC enables confidential balances via Encrypted Token Accounts (ETAs), hiding balances and transfer amounts - Privacy strength depends not only on cryptography, but on anonymity set size and user behavior. - Umbra treats anonymity sets as a first-class metric and designs the product to minimize behavioral privacy failures. - A multi-purpose shielded pool allows funds to remain private across transfers, swaps, and yield, compounding privacy over time. - The Umbra SDK allows wallets and applications to integrate private transfers, swaps, and balances, feeding activity into a shared shielded pool. - Swaps execute via public liquidity venues while identity, balances, and intent remain unlinkable. - Users can earn yield on shielded assets, incentivizing longer time in the private environment. - Umbra mitigates exit-related privacy risks through product design, including anonymity indicators, configurable unshielding delays, and confidential balances. - UTXO-based shielded systems suffer from performance decay as balances fragment into many notes over time, increasing scan and aggregation costs. - Umbra eliminates this bottleneck by consolidating balances into Encrypted Token Accounts (ETAs), using UTXOs only at the anonymity boundary. The result is encrypted balances with stable, high-performance transfers even as activity scales. - Compliance is addressed through proactive screening against risk databases and opt-in selective disclosure via read-only viewing keys. - Umbra was launched via MetaDAO as an ownership coin, with governance and economic policy determined by token holders through futarchy. - Umbra is not a mixer or a single feature, but a sovereign privacy domain with its own private state and internal economy. - Umbra is Hopecore for Privacy. Thank you all for reading!

The first smartphone I plan to buy in 2026 is the Honor Magic 8 Pro Air. There’s only one reason: despite being absurdly thin and light, it delivers truly uncompromised flagship-level hardware. The Honor Magic 8 Pro Air measures just 6.1 mm in thickness and weighs only 155 g, yet it packs a 5,500 mAh battery. This combination alone is extremely rare. It doesn’t sacrifice experience for thinness. Instead, it force-fits everything a flagship should have into an Air-class body. The camera system is where this phone becomes genuinely outrageous. The main camera features a 50 MP sensor with a 1/1.3-inch large sensor, an f/1.6 aperture, and a 23 mm equivalent focal length, along with OIS optical image stabilization. Through pixel binning, it delivers a 2.4 μm effective pixel size, which is squarely in Pro-grade territory. The ultra-wide camera is also 50 MP, with an f/2.2 aperture, a 16 mm equivalent focal length, and a 112° field of view. It even supports 2.5 cm high-resolution macro photography, making it far from a throwaway lens. For telephoto, the Magic 8 Pro Air uses a 64 MP periscope camera with 3.2× optical zoom, an f/2.6 aperture, and a 74 mm equivalent focal length, once again with OIS. It supports up to 100× digital zoom. In addition, the camera system includes a color temperature sensor and a flicker sensor, completing a full flagship-level imaging setup. The front-facing camera is a 50 MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, clearly not an afterthought.

He's 26. Apple offered him $8.4 million for the tongue-controlled retainer he 3D-prints in a San Diego apartment on a $180 Prusa. He said no The retainer sits inside your mouth like an Invisalign tray. Inside it: a miniature accelerometer array wired to a Bluetooth LE chip, all encapsulated in medical-grade epoxy he sources from a Kearny Mesa dental supply company for $28 a bottle. It reads tongue and bite pressure patterns at 240 samples per second, translates them into cursor movements and click gestures, and streams the output to any device paired over Bluetooth. Total hardware cost per unit: $47. He wears his own retainer eleven hours a day and hasn't touched a mouse in six months He posted a demo video to Reddit r/AssistiveTech in October showing a full 47-minute Cursor coding session controlled entirely with his tongue and bite gestures. The post hit the front page in nine hours. An Apple Accessibility engineer found it through a Hacker News crosspost three days later. Tim Cook quote-tweeted the demo the following Wednesday - called it "the accessibility hardware Vision Pro should have shipped with." Apple's business development team wired an $8.4 million acquisition offer to his lawyer in November for the retainer design, the embedded firmware, and a three-year exclusivity contract that would make Apple the only distributor globally. He declined the offer in December. His public statement was seven words: "This should be open. Everyone needs it." He open-sourced the firmware and STL files on GitHub the same day Apple Vision Pro burned $3.5 billion in R&D on the premise that spatial computing input requires their proprietary hand-tracking silicon and their multi-year hardware roadmap. Neuralink raised at $2 billion on the same premise for neural implants. Tobii runs at $340 million selling eye-tracking hardware to accessibility clinics at $12,000 per unit. He runs a Prusa in a San Diego apartment printing a $47 retainer that a nine-year-old with cerebral palsy in Argentina downloaded and printed at her local library last week

Interestingly, Xynova’s technological approach shares the same origins as the dexterous hand technology used in Optimus v3 (though Elon has noted that this design still needs further refinement). The Flex2 is an upgraded version built on the Flex1: v1 featured 25 DOF and used a cable-driven system; the v2 introduces direct drive, which reduces the DOF to 23 but also sheds 400g in weight. It seems a hybrid drive mechanism may be the more practical solution. In March this year, following the successful completion of its Series A funding round (with investors including Xiaomi and others), this robotics company--founded in 2024--began construction of a large-scale production facility. Spanning over 5,000 square meters, the base is designed to achieve an annual output of 200,000 miniature electric cylinders and 10,000 dexterous hands. However, hardware alone is far from enough. A truly capable dexterous hand must be the result of the co-evolution of data, models, and the physical hardware. In other words, in addition to mass production, Xynova is simultaneously developing a complete integrated system that combines perception capabilities, robotic manipulation intelligence, and hand-specific coordination. This is essentially a foundational robotic module. Yet its applications go far beyond that. It can be directly adapted to industrial robotic arms on production lines, as well as integrated into the bodies of humanoid robots. That said, what I’m most eager to see is its use in advanced bionic prosthetics for humans. If it can successfully demonstrate this expanded capability, its impact will reach well beyond the realm of humanoid robots. (Cyborg)
