I choose pixel-style graphics over hyper-realistic graphics any day of the week. The Chrono Trigger intro is a perfect example of pixel art at its very finest, and why that style hits so much harder than games with lifelike graphics. Never let it die, please.

Metal Slug turned 30 this year. It has aged incredibly gracefully; and I think the main reason is its pixel graphic style. Unlike early 90s vector graphics, ray tracing, or hyper-realistic styles, pixel art ages much better. You could release Metal Slug today as an arcade game and it would still work perfectly. You can't say the same about the majority of games from three decades ago. Many, many coins went into this beauty back in the day…

Here we see GTA IV overlaid with AI generated graphics. I can very well imagine that in the near future we will generate graphics with AI, because it is cheaper and faster than if everything is created in advance in a graphics engine.

I don’t recall MHRise ever really having dips but it does run at a massively solid 30fps on switch 2. I don’t know why but it looks and feels better in handheld, graphics I assume because of pixel density of a smaller screen but for some reason 30fps feels smoother than a monitor

Why game companies focus on graphics instead of gameplay? 1) the devs must show the game to upper management. They don't play it. They just look at the cut scenes. So to get greenlit you need cool cut scenes that the players will probably skip. 2) the game journalists who review your game only care about screen shots. They will play it for maybe 10 minutes. Superficial looks, not depth, is what they will review. I'm not decrying graphics. Great graphics make a game better. But game play entices players. If devs ignore management and journalists you can get incredible games. Remember Dwarf Fortress? And look at Fallout: New Vegas - really, kind of chunky graphics even for its time, but terrific gameplay. Also neaer-perfect soundtrack.

How is this game turning 40 this year? I know some will argue that it wasn't the most complex game ever, that you could exploit the jousting "glitch", that it was relatively simple to beat after a while. Maybe all true. You know what's also true? For its time those graphics, the iconic intro sequence, the soundtrack, the cutscenes, were all beyond what you had seen before; I would take any bet your jaw dropped. The sword fighting scenes with the shadow-play backdrop... that's not just a game with good graphics, that's art! If you can name a game from 1986 with better graphics, be my guest. I would also say that any C64 fan recognizes the opening track blindfolded within 3 seconds. Legendary!

At the very least I have to admit that it's very compelling to see such a faithful remake in terms of gameplay in this day and age, this game is quite literally just a copy and paste of SF64 with better graphics, and while I still consider it kind of lame, it's still impressive

AMD has become a Monster in terms of integrated graphics. In this example here, Linus is playing Black Myth Wukong at High Settings and achieving FPS well above 60FPS. The future of handheld Gaming has never looked brighter. Once FSR 4 gets implemented to these APUs, it is going to be even better! High Graphics and a Great Battery Life

I feel it should be illegal to have two processors that share the same name (Z2 A and Z2 Extreme) have completely different GPU cores, the Z2 A is an updated version of the Steam Deck chip with RDNA 2 graphics, whereas the Z2 Extreme is equipped with RDNA 3.5 graphics. Source: Linus Tech Tips

Did FPS games peak in the 90s? I guess the newer ones have better graphics, but do they really "feel" better in terms of gameplay and fun? Unreal Tournament (Epic Games, 1999) was one of the best of its kind. A favorite for our LAN sessions back in the day. Carrying a 21" mintor over to your friend's house felt a little less heavy when you knew you'd be playing Unreal later that day... Exellent and colorful graphics (even on PCs that weren't high end, like those you needed for Quake III Arena for example), great sound, and your typical capture the flag or deathmatches - I mean, what more did you need? Plenty of "Game of the Year" nominations (with some wins), the highest critcal acclaim, and massive sales numbers. I think we can all agree that Unreal Tournament belongs in the Hall of Fame of FPS games. Or maybe I am just getting old and gloryfing things from the past too much.

Every company I've worked at, product graphics were always a bottleneck. They're important assets because they help sell the value of the product. But what happens when the product is constantly evolving? I built a tool (inspired by what George Bugg started) where I turned all of out atoms/components into HTML so that anyone internally can create their own product graphics. Because we have amazing guidelines (shoutout Shivani and team) I was able to give it specific constraints, rules, and guidelines. So much more potential for this tool, e.g, product animation or creating demos. I even got a Slack bot to generate graphics without me even touching the tool.

I often use the word "soul" when I compare old games to new ones - and this one is absolutely bursting at the seams with it Graphics: 10/10 Music: 10/10 Gameplay: 10/10 In 1990, The Secret of Monkey Island was light-years ahead of anything that had come before it. It didn't just look a little better - it completely moved the goalposts. Remember the first time you saw the intro? I thought I'd never see a better game. This one holds a very, very special place in my heart. So, you want to be a pirate, eh? You look more like a flooring inspector.
