I think we might need to invent a new term for Rapid Intensification for this Blizzard. Because it is about to BLOW the normal parameters OUT OF THE PARK. ✅Normal rapid intensification, or Bombogenesis, is defined as a Storm dropping 24 millibars in pressure in 24 hours. That alone...

⚠️ Our Storm is going into absolute LUDICROUS MODE tonight as BOMBGENESIS is fully underway. ⬇️This Blizzard is DROPPING Pressure like Weight on a KETO Diet and is expected to shed another 18mb in just 12 hours. For context, meteorologists define rapid intensification as a 24mb drop in 24 hours. Our Storm is on pace to drop over 40mb in 24 hours. This is EXTREME Rapid Intensification 💨 As pressure PLUMMETS offshore, the Storm will begin SUCKING air toward its center like a vacuum, causing Winds to really CRANK. ❄️ As the Winds strengthen, a HUGE swath of Heavy Snow continues spreading across the Northeast, with snowfall rates SOARING up to 3 to 4 inches per hour. 📏Places in New Jersey have already picked up close to 10 inches of Snow, with DOUBLE that still possible before this is over. There's even LIGHTNING STRIKES near the center of the Storm, which is sign of rapid strengthening. The stronger this Storm gets, the worse the impacts become. 👊 Hang on tight tonight, my brotheren. The sun will rise tomorrow

🚨 It’s happening. Our Storm is entering BOMB GENESIS MODE and is now rapidly strengthening. 💨 Conditions about to head downhill in a HURRY as Winds begin to CRANK close to Hurricane Force this evening , especially near the Carolina coastline. ⏬ Over the next 24 hours, this Storm is expected to drop 35 millibars in pressure, rivaling the rate of intensification seen in some of the MOST EXTREME Hurricanes in recent years. 🌀 At peak intensity, pressure could fall as low as 967 mb, territory normally reserved for a Category 3 Hurricane. 🌬️ That kind of pressure drop will drive WIND GUSTS up to 70 mph on land, particularly along the Carolina coast. This is near HURRICANE FORCE. 🌊Over the open water of the Atlantic, Winds could get as high as 100mph during the height of the Storm. Just insane. ❄️ The combination of HOWLING WIND and HEAVY SNOW will produce BLIZZARD CONDITIONS for many. ⁉️We should have widespread Blizzard Warnings across eastern North Carolina. Not sure why the NWS is holding back. But that doesn't matter. ❤️The HEART OF THE STORM is still ahead of us. 🔏LOCK IN. Hang on, my brotheren. With a little luck and a lot of toilet paper, we will all get through this. Godspeed and good luck 👊

55 mph of intensification in 24 hrs, obliterated the criteria for Rapid Intensification. Wait for it… You’ll see in this animation the water ahead of the storm is even hotter, 3-5 degrees above normal. Cat 5 by forecast tonight may do 90mph in 36 hours!! #HurricaneLee WFLA NEWS

Pacific Hurricane Polo has just been upgraded to CATEGORY 5 intensity after undergoing one of the most extreme rapid intensification phases ever recorded on planet Earth. In just 24 HOURS, his winds have increased by 110 MPH, and his pressure has detonated by 75 MBAR. This essentially matches Hurricane Otis’ unprecedented intensification rate (over almost the exact same waters near Acapulco) back in 2023. As of now, Polo is not forecast to make landfall in Mexico.

‼️I don't think people are grasping how MISERABLE this Winter Storm will be. This Winter Storm will be NOTHING like last week’s storm❌ 🥶 Portions of the Carolinas will turn into SIBERIA on Saturday, as Hurricane Force Wind gusts and close to a FOOT of Snow fall at the same time. 🌀 Our Storm is what’s called a BOMB CYCLONE, meaning it is a rapidly strengthening Low Pressure System. 💨 Instead of a calm, steady Snow, conditions will be ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL inside the core of the storm as Blizzard like Snow and Wind WHIP around. 🌡️ On top of that, Temperatures will be Frigid, with Wind Chills close to 0. I’ll have another update later tonight, but right now this is looking like a BIG ONE for our Carolina brotheren. More to come my brotheren. 👊❄️

A dynamic visualization showing the wind patterns of the bomb cyclone that is now hitting the west coast of Canada and the USA. Look at that low pressure rotation. An eye-like centre signifies rapid storm intensification, according to NOAA. 👁 #bombcyclone #bcstorm

I love the term #bombogenesis - coined in a white paper in 1980. It sounds scary, but really it means “rapidly intensifying storm”. The reason it matters is, the faster a storm deepens (pressure drops) the stronger the wind gusts due to an imbalance in pressure - it forces air to move quickly. So when meteorologists say a #storm is a bomb it means something. In this case gusts over the ocean will reach 100 mph, with coastal gusts to #hurricane force 75 mph. #blizzard #blizzardof2026

BREAKING: Category 5 Hurricane Melissa has achieved a new peak intensity of 180 MPH sustained winds and a core pressure of 896 MBAR. She is officially the 5TH MOST INTENSE Atlantic Hurricane in history and is nearing the maximum theoretical strength a storm can reach in this part of the world. Landfall over Jamaica is just hours away.

Tuesday, February 13, 2024, 8:42 PM PST: IR satellite shows a 545 DM low pressure that is undergoing intensification just 245 miles Northeast of the Hawaiian islands. This is a strong indication of a shift in the trajectory of the secondary low-pressure center combined. The strong, Pacific jet extension axis point is aimed directly at Southern California. There is now considerable high confidence that the developing storm will transfer heavy rainfall subtropical moisture that will be drawn up into Central California and Southern California by Monday evening. These abrupt developments started occurring very rapidly in the last eight hours and quickly switched the forecast to a stronger storm scenario setting up. More details will continue to evolve in the next 24 hours to 36-hour period. #ElNino #Califoniastorms

The Philippines can’t catch a break in the wake of Typhoon Kalmaegi (TinoPH), because just as that system heads deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, a new leviathan has emerged from the depths of the Pacific. On the right side of this satellite loop is Tropical Storm Fung-wong, a sprawling embryonic cyclone in the Philippine Sea. She may be weak and disorganized now, but the environment ahead is going to be favorable for rapid intensification. The island of Luzon is her most likely target for landfall. Watch this one closely.

BREAKING: Hurricane Hunters just measured an almost unbelievable 889 mb pressure inside Hurricane Polo. If that reading is confirmed, Polo would become the second strongest hurricane ever recorded in the eastern Pacific, behind only Hurricane Patricia in 2015. What makes this even more remarkable is how quickly Polo got here. The storm has intensified at an extraordinary rate, being only a tropical storm 24 hours ago. An 889 mb pressure is an exceptionally rare number in the eastern Pacific, putting Polo into truly historic territory. We are watching one of the strongest Pacific hurricanes ever observed unfold in real time.

⚠️A POWERFUL Bomb Cyclone is set to slam Europe on Thursday as it tracks through the English Channel, bringing Heavy Snow, Strong Wind, and Rain. 💨 Hurricane force Wind Gusts are possible along parts of the French coast, with wind gusts expected to exceed 70mph as the storm rapidly "bombs out". ❄️ On the back side of the storm, Heavy Snow and Blizzard Conditions could develop across parts of England, as cold air wraps in behind the system and winds absolutely CRANK. ⚠️ This is a high impact, fast moving storm, capable of producing major travel disruptions, power outages, and dangerous conditions across multiple countries. Normally, I stick to US Weather, but this will be a very impactful Storm for our European Brotheren so I thought it was worth covering. Heads up my European Brotheren

We are watching something incredibly rare unfold in the Pacific Ocean right now... Hurricane Polo is rapidly intensifying, and the storm has now strengthened into a borderline Category 3 hurricane, with further intensification into Category 5 strength expected by tomorrow evening. This hurricane could look dramatically different just 24 hours from now. If current trends continue, we could be looking at the strongest hurricane of the season!

Hurricane Erin has been driven into a ferocious feeding frenzy by the heat energy of the SW Atlantic. Rarely do you see a storm outside of the West Pacific undergo such extreme RI as this. In 24 hours, her winds have more than DOUBLED, from 70 mph to 145 MPH, and her core pressure has plunged from 998 mbar to 935 MBAR. This is an exceptionally rapid rate of deepening for an open Atlantic Hurricane. Erin’s pressure continues to plummet by 6-8 mbar per hour based on Hurricane Hunter recon data, and she is now knocking on the door of Category 5 status.

Here is a 3D visualization of the coming solar storm using model parameters from NASA's run, NOAA's run (shown below), and the coronagraph views from STEREO-A/COR2 and SOHO/LASCO. The storm is expected to hit Earth early December 9. The 3D visualization clearly shows the low inclination orientation of the solar slinky core inside the larger storm envelope. Of course, the earlier eruption that erupted to the northeast, might deflect this structure a little bit, but likely that will only make the structure move more towards the ecliptic plane, which will give us a larger chance of crossing through the solar slinky core. One nice thing about low inclination flux rope cores is that they almost ALWAYS have southward field in them at some point. So this is good news for aurora photographers-- as long as this solar storm stays true to its launch trajectory and inclination, we could see some organized southward pointed magnetic field. Considering this solar storm is fast-- that usually indicates the storm will not deviate much from its original launch trajectory! Here is the link to a static frame of the 3D frame visualization so you can fly around it yourself:

Tropical Storm Dolphin formed only 17 hours ago and already she is constructing a frantic inner core, with boiling, dry-ice bubbles of convection deep freezing the embryonic eyewall structure hidden beneath the cloud tops. This compact, fast-growing behavior seems to be priming Dolphin for explosively rapid intensification. From the very first advisory, she has been forecast to become a Super Typhoon, and everything we’re seeing right now looks to be snowballing in that direction.

⚠️ I’m not liking the way this Winter Storm is trending for our Texas brotheren.... One aspect that isn’t being talked about enough is the combination of significant Ice Accumulations followed by days of Brutal Cold. If Texas were to receive even a fraction of the ice currently being shown, widespread power outages would become a real concern. With frigid air rushing in behind the storm, temperatures could remain at or below freezing for days, making recovery much harder. This will not be as cold as the deadly Winter Storm of 2021, but the dangerous combination of ice and prolonged cold will still be there. 🌡️ Some areas could see temperatures 30 to 40 degrees below average after the storm, which would compound impacts if outages occur. I’m not saying panic, my Texas brotheren, but this is a situation worth paying attention to and preparing for if current trends hold. 👀 I’ll be watching this LIKE A HAWK 🦅

Incredibly, Hawaii is now within a Hurricane’s forecast cone for the 2ND time this year. While the most likely scenario at this point in time is for Hurricane Lowell to pass to the west of the island chain, Kaua’i and Ni’ihau should still be on alert for any eastward shifts that result in a more direct potential impact. This is a strong and dangerous 130 MPH storm that is lurking in the dark waters beneath them.
