For years, parties selected their nominees without primaries. Yea, it’s wild, but primary elections are a party function, not part of any actual government election.

"Votes to actually count". That's not how primaries work - it's not a popularity contest. Each state is different the parties all have different nominating rules and it goes on and on. Oh and of course you need to be ballot eligible in each state and the rules are not standard
