Earlier, the blending level of ethanol was 10%, and recently it was increased to 20%. ❓Has the government conducted any scientific studies or consulted research associations, such as the one in Pune, before increasing the blending percentage? 👉Another concern is that customers are not aware of ethanol blending in petrol, and retail shops are not displaying any details about it. It is reported that many retail shops are blending ethanol more than 20%, which may affect the mechanical side of vehicles. ❓I also have a question for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister. In 2005, then Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar defended ethanol blending in petrol, saying the UPA government aimed for 10% blending and could increase it to 20%, 30%, 40% or even 50% if ethanol availability improved. Today, many of the same Congress leaders are attacking the ethanol blending policy being implemented under Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the Modi government, despite having advocated the same approach while in power.

In 2013 and 2014, we were blending about one and a half percent ethanol in gasoline. And this programme was targeted to have 20% blending, which is E20, completed in December 25, five years ahead of the target. This programme, the ethanol blending programme, particularly in 2018, was in a structured manner, put out for discussion and deliberation by all stakeholders. It is supported by scientific evidence, extensive testing by the automotive, manufacturers and the agencies who support them, namely the Automotive Research Association of India, ARAI and SIAM, and also it is in line with the global best practices which is followed to green the fossil fuels to lower the carbon emissions," says expert Vartika Shukla at the press conference by industry experts on ethanol.
