In 2013, a girl named Peh Yan Heng was walking along the beach when she discovered a stranded octopus stuck on the shore. It was very weak and struggling to breathe. She gently picked up the octopus, carried it to deeper water, and released it back into the sea to save its life. Once the octopus was back in its familiar environment, instead of swimming away immediately, it turned back toward the girl’s feet. It slowly extended one of its tentacles, gently touching her leg or almost “hugging” her in a slow, deliberate motion as if saying thank you for saving it. Only after that did it swim off into the ocean. 💓

In 2000, more than 12,000 strangers flew to South Africa to wash penguins by hand. A cargo ship called the MV Treasure had gone down off the coast near Cape Town, and the oil that spilled from it was drifting straight toward two islands where most of the world’s African penguins lived. Around 40,000 birds were covered in it. The wildlife teams on the ground couldn’t possibly clean that many in time, so they put out a call for help, and people came. Volunteers flew in from across the world, took shifts in converted warehouses, and scrubbed the birds one by one with dish soap. They tube-fed them fish. They cleaned the pens. They slept in shifts and went back to it. Around 90 percent of the oiled penguins were cleaned, rehabilitated, and released back into the sea. Conservationists today still point to that operation as the reason African penguins are still around at all. It remains the largest animal rescue ever pulled off, and the entire thing ran on people who had no professional training and no reason to be there other than that they’d heard the birds needed hands.

From a scouting perspective, Dach had a very impressive shift. He made an excellent defensive play deep in his zone to spin away from the opponent. Nice puck skills and speed exiting the zone, smart feed to Newhook on the rush, solid puck retrievals in the O zone, and chip to Newhook. A solid hit to take Fabbro out of the play went to the front of the net and bumped Fabbro away with the purpose of establishing a net-front presence. Even his shot was decent other than not raising the puck but that is often the case that close in...it was simply a great save. He also diligently got two more cracks at it, and had the right idea. Two more good saves. I loved that shift from him. If he does that consistently, he will start producing.

Unable to see properly, the dog spun in circles before slowly approaching him, as if begging for food. Put off by its appearance, the boy walked away. The next day, he saw the dog again near the cemetery. It was gentle, familiar with the area, and kept searching everywhere following scents and looking around, only to end up disappointed every time. Other stray dogs bullied it, yet it refused to leave. A local woman then shared the heartbreaking truth. About two and a half years earlier, an elderly man had rescued the dog when it was just a tiny puppy. The two became inseparable. When the old man passed away and was buried in that cemetery, the loyal dog began an endless vigil, returning every day in search of the only person it had ever loved. With no one left to care for it, the dog gradually became dirty, severely matted, and neglected but it never lost its gentle, loving nature. Ashamed of how he had judged the dog at first, the boy returned with food and water. But the dog showed little interest, as though its heart still belonged to its late owner. Fearing it wouldn't survive much longer, the boy decided to take it home and give it a second chance. At the veterinary clinic, the dog was found to be only mildly malnourished. Removing the thick, tangled mats took two and a half hours of careful work, yet the dog remained calm and patient throughout the entire process despite the discomfort. After its bath and grooming, a sweet little dog finally emerged from beneath all that neglected fur. In the end, the loyal dog found the loving home it had always deserved. ❤️

Charlie and Jim just sat down with Jesse Michels to share this wild story: Foltz: “We all turned and looked toward the back of the canoe, and I see this aspirin tablet-sized white circle.” “It makes a left turn, and then it starts coming straight toward us.” “As it gets closer, the tops of the trees are illuminated.” “When it was about less than 100 yards away from us … I thought, I wonder what the hell it’ll do if I flash an SOS at it.” “And then this thing stopped.” “No sound whatsoever.” “All of a sudden this big cone of light, like a neon blue light … starts from the bottom of this sphere coming out across the lake, toward the canoe.” “All I could hear behind me were Jack and Jim screaming, ‘paddle, Charlie, paddle!’” Weiner: “And it had this weird kind of life to it.” “The surface of this thing was like roiling.” Michels: “Like it was some sort of plasma—” Weiner: “Yeah.” Foltz: “This thing had a halo around it.” “And the sphere itself was in constant motion.” Weiner: “The other guy with us, he was just like catatonic with the paddle across his legs and just stared out.” Foltz: “It seemed like only a few moments from the time we started paddling to the time that Jack and Jim and I were … standing in front of the canoe on the sand of the beach.” “And this sphere had followed us all the way across the lake.” Weiner: “The last thing I remembered before we were suddenly at the shore was looking back to see where this thing was.” “It was right behind us, and I was like, ‘oh, Christ, we are not gonna make it back.’” “That’s the last thing I remembered until we [were back] on the shore of the campsite.” Michels: “So there’s a little blackout period, missing time in your memory.” Weiner: “Yeah.” Foltz: “I had a very vivid memory of my eyes focused on that campfire.” “Because that was the only indicator of where our campsite was.” “When we got to shore, the three of us were standing in the sand, I reached down … and picked up the flashlight again, and I gave it another SOS.” “This time, all it did was it just went away from us to the opposite side of the lake.” “It ascended up and away at a 45-degree angle.” Weiner: “I remember it hovering right over the water, and this cone of light was coming straight down under it on the water.” “And it was close.” “I remember thinking … I could hit this with a rock.” Michels: “Could you make out how big it was and the shape?” Foltz: “It was spherical.” Weiner: “Like 80 feet in diameter.” Jesse Michels American Alchemy

A UFO chased these four men through the wilderness—in the middle of the night. “It was alive.” “It was some sort of plasma.” “I saw this neon blue cone of light coming toward us … ” Then, everything went dark. That’s the last thing they remembered. Charlie Foltz, Chuck Rak, and twin brothers Jack and Jim Weiner were camping in the Allagash Wilderness in 1976. They went canoeing on a lake in the middle of the night, with only the light of their campfire to guide them back. That’s when a plasma-like UFO found them.
