We launched the Preventing Exclusions Fund three years ago, with the support of Sky Group, to tackle disproportionate rates of school exclusion. Since then, we’ve been working with some incredible partners to test innovative solutions, provide personalised support to vulnerable young people, and build a more inclusive education system. Politics must always be about the future and making sure our children have the best opportunities in life. I was delighted to visit St. Patrick’s Primary School in Dungannon to help launch their fantastic new unit for children with additional needs. It was a real pleasure to also witness the incredible energy and talent of the young people, and to see how deeply committed the staff are to supporting every pupil. Ensuring that every child with additional needs has access to proper resources and facilities is a top priority for this Executive.

Yesterday I announced a new School Stabilization Team to support the SFUSD in this difficult time, and today they are getting to work. Our team will immediately begin meeting with District leadership, including the Board of Education members who are our partners in this effort. School District leaders and staff are working hard to meet these challenges, and our goal is expand their capacity and help to troubleshoot, review, validate and provide more support in the following immediate areas: • Plans around potential school closures • Budget balancing so we can retain local control • Any operational issues impacting kids today This is not a City takeover or about placing blame — this is a partnership and about finding solutions. All of us working together to deliver on what matters most: supporting our kids.
