Temporary Indian students in Calgary are staging a so-called “hunger strike” after being refused post-graduation work permits. They entered Canada on study permits for programs that were never eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), paid high international tuition, and expected it would lead to staying permanently. Now that those applications have been refused, they’re demanding to remain. When a work permit is refused, maintained status ends. They lose the legal right to work and have a limited period to either restore their status or leave Canada. A temporary permit is exactly that: temporary. Calling it a hunger strike while continuing to eat food doesn’t create a legal right to permanent residency or change Canada’s immigration laws.

In 2011, Tim Uppal promised that Canada would become the top issuer of student visas to Indian students. In 2023, he tells those same students they are the future of Canada. I don’t understand how a student population of nearly half a million from India can be blamed solely on the Liberals when it was Conservative MP Tim Uppal who originally spearheaded the policy, and once Canada became number one, fought against deportations to keep them in the country.

The Trump Admin is trying to end automatic extensions on work permits for workers who are legally authorized to work in the United States and who are awaiting a renewal of their work permit, forcing them to stop providing for their families or be fired by their employer. I’m forcing a vote in the Senate to reverse this unfair rule that will harm workers and their families, businesses, and our economy.

I asked international students in Brampton, ON. who are protesting their university if they'd send their child to Canada. One student says he came here mistaking Canada for a "developed country." "Canada is going to be North Korea," one student says, pointing out the "exploitation" they are subjected to under Justin Trudeau's "dictatorship." Inflation, Recession, high taxes, and lack of housing are the main reasons students regret coming to Canada. They've been camping outside their university in frigid temperatures for almost more than a week protesting their school for failing some of them twice from the same course. They say that they've not been shown what they've failed on, and they believe this is a tactic their school is using to financially exploit them for another semester. There were lots of speculation going on so I decided to come here from Calgary to investigate. Most of the students are from Punjab, India. An international student on a work permit which is going to expire soon blames Canada for the fact that she's going to have to leave despite the fact that no such guarantee is made to students or temporary workers. I should know because I came to Canada as an international student nearly 30 years ago. She and her friends are now exploring ways of how they can stay on in Canada, including applying for refugee status which will be tied up for years while their case is decided. Our immigration minister Marc Miller ᐅᑭᒫᐃᐧᐅᓃᐸᐄᐧᐤᐃᔨᐣ Mikotsikaa naively believes those whose permits are expiring are going to leave Canada voluntarily which is a joke. He should watch this video. The sense of entitlement of some of these people is astonishing. She doesn't have a legal right to stay on in Canada beyond the date her current permit expires and if she refuses to leave, she should be deported. These people are playing on white guilt, the easiest thing to exploit in Canada where people are generally naive and think everyone is well intentioned.

#WATCH | New York, US: On the implications on international students of proposed DHS (US Department of Homeland Security) changes to duration of status for F-1 visas, Co-founder and CEO of Build, Danielle Goldman, says, “...Indian students are one of the largest student populations in the US, meaning Indian students at a disproportionate rate are entering into the H-1B lottery…if they are not selected, many companies say to those students, we can't help you…now the change that is happening is that Day 1 CPT programs in this new duration of status rule are only allowed if you have not already received a degree at that level. So, for anyone who already has a master's degree, for anyone who already went and did their OPT through the secondary degree, they are not going to be able to go back and say, I need another master's degree because I need work authorization to continue working. They would have to go do a next level of degree, a doctorate, and that's not reasonable…Amazon and Meta and a lot of companies that relied on that solution to retain their talent, whom they've invested in during the OPT period, that's not going to be possible anymore, and they're going to have to think of solutions.” (01.06)

Not just Punjab, but the entire nation was shocked by the revelations made by these girls from Punjab about the treatment meted out to them in Gulf countries. They were sent there in the name of work, but as soon as they reached there, their passports were snatched away and they were being forced to work as slaves of the Sheikhs. These girls who returned from Iraq, Oman and Qatar consider themselves lucky that they have come out of that hell but they say that dozens of girls from Punjab are still trapped there. They are being made to do such work that you will be filled with anger on hearing it.
