I discussed strengthening our air defense with Rob Jetten Dick Schoof. I briefed him on the massive Russian strikes and the need for additional air defense missiles. We explored new ideas that could help reinforce air defense and protect our people. It is crucial to enhance coordination among partners in the face of Russia’s growing production of ballistic missiles. I thank the Prime Minister for the Netherlands’ support of the PURL initiative and for the many important steps taken to assist our country since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Today, I held a Staff meeting, focusing primarily on energy security and the protection of our energy system. The Russians have not changed their objective of destroying Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, relentlessly attacking and adjusting their strikes to our defense capabilities, making it more difficult to repel them. Today’s reports covered defense systems, the protection of energy facilities, and the recovery efforts after attacks. We also discussed air defense capabilities and the need for interceptor missiles. New tasks have been assigned to our diplomats and the Ministry of Defense for working with partners. The supply of air defense systems for Ukraine is critical and must not stop. It is essential to constantly seek ways worldwide to strengthen our defense, increase domestic production of necessary equipment, localize manufacturing, and secure licensing agreements with partners. Of course, we have responses to this and will continue to respond, but the main priority is the stability of the system. We also defined key objectives together with the Minister of Defense of Ukraine for the upcoming Ramstein meeting in the coming days. Strengthening air defense is the number one goal for this Ramstein and for our contacts in Europe and the U.S. in general. The Ukrainian army must be – and will be – consistently strong.

In Kyiv and the region, our emergency services are working at the sites of the Russian strikes. The Russians have launched about 36 missiles and almost 600 drones against ordinary life. The main targets of the attack were energy infrastructure and civilian facilities, with extensive damage and fires in residential buildings. We currently have reports of dozens injured and three killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones. We must work without wasting a single day to ensure that there are enough missiles for our air defense systems, and that everything necessary for our protection and for pressure on Russia is in place. It is time Europe made a decision on the frozen assets if Moscow refuses to end its drone and missile strikes. And we must certainly discuss with all partners the steps needed to bring this war to an end. Thank you to everyone who is helping.

Efforts to deal with the aftermath of the massive Russian attack are currently underway in the Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Mykolaiv regions. All necessary services are involved. The main target for the Russians was the energy infrastructure of the Kyiv region, but unfortunately, there were also direct hits on and damage to ordinary residential buildings, schools, and civilian businesses. As of now, four people have been reported killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Many people have been injured, and some are still seeking medical assistance. Over the course of the night, the Russians launched around 430 drones of various types and a significant number of missiles. There were 13 ballistic missiles alone, and the total number of missiles in this attack was 68. According to preliminary data, 58 of them were intercepted by our air defense system. And every such night of Russian strikes is a reminder to all our partners that air defenses and the missiles for them are effectively a daily necessity. Every agreement on missile supplies cannot wait – everything must be implemented as quickly as possible. Our agreements to increase the production of air defense missiles are a critical direction, and this direction requires one hundred percent attention. Russia will try to exploit the war in the Middle East to cause even greater destruction here in Europe, in Ukraine. This is why we must be fully aware of the real level of the threat and prepare accordingly, namely: in Europe, we need to develop the production of air defense missiles – especially those capable of countering ballistic threats – as well as all other systems necessary to truly protect lives, regardless of what may be happening in any other part of the world.
