GEN-1 plays the 🐚 shell game, trained on just 1 hr of robot data. It also generalizes to unseen objects, like berkay 's car keys. Physical AI models should be capable of benchmark tasks like this one. It's interesting for the all the reasons Rhoda AI calls out -- requires visual memory, and the model must track the cups from the very start, at high frame rates. Interestingly, GEN-1 appears to exhibit a degree of "active perception." It's subtle; the hands can sometimes appear to "follow" the cups, using its own movements to help attend to where it thinks the object should be. In my experience, robot 'generalists' are often jacks of all trades but masters of none. In training across multiple tasks and environments, robot policies fail to generalize robustly and effectively to each particular test setting. What if at test time, we non-parametrically *retrieved* “relevant” data from the training set and used it to significantly improve the performance of few-shot imitation learning to be robust to various test time scenes. Notably, we are *not* collecting lots of new data, just training more on sub-components of the same training data! Now, we’re certainly not the first to suggest retrieval, but in our new work - STRAP, we show how retrieving relevant *sub-trajectories* from offline datasets can significantly increase data reuse across tasks, when paired with an appropriate metric space. So I heard we need more data for robot learning :) Purely real world teleop is expensive and slow, making large scale data collection challenging. I’ve been excited about getting more data into robot learning, going beyond just real-world teleop data. To this end, we’ve been scaling up data generation with RL in realistic simulations generated on the fly from crowdsourced videos. Enables realistic data collection, much more cheaply than purely real world teleop. Importantly, data collection becomes even*cheaper* with more environments, allowing training with over 100x more data. Transfers to real robots for generalizable manipulation. A 🧵 (1/N)

1/7 Physical AI has a data problem. More compute alone won’t teach a robot how to move, grasp, react, or recover from mistakes. LLMs had the entire internet to learn from. Robots need something different: huge amounts of real action data. That’s where Axis Robotics gets interesting. $AXIS is building a data engine for Physical AI, turning robot training into something people can contribute to directly through a browser. The loop is straightforward: Generate → Collect → Process → Deploy → Correct → Repeat. What looks simple on the surface could become something much bigger underneath: a scalable way to produce the training data robots need to become genuinely useful in the physical world. The real unlock for Physical AI might not be another bigger model. It might be better data.
