I’m not a 3D artist, but I had so much fun today testing Slop Unbound and creating cute creatures and models for the first time It’s FREE, experimental, easy to play with, and honestly, one of the most fun ways I’ve used AI for visual creation because you get real control instead of just prompting and hoping for the best You do not need to rely only on Blender anymore AI can simplify your workflow and make 3D creation feel much more accessible If you are into 3D art, character design, or just curious about new creative tools, you should absolutely test it. It’s fast, fun, and surprisingly addictive I’ll share more in the coming days, but for now, go try it yourself for FREE and share your results. Let me share a long-awaited behind-the-scenes video of how Simulon works. It all starts with setting up a scene. You set the location, lighting conditions and capture the light map with a few turns. After that, you can capture the environment mesh using the Lidar scanner. That's the moment the fun begins. You can bring in your #3D models with animations and capture a video of up to 50" using the #AR preview on screen. After that is done, you send the footage to the cloud and in a couple of minutes you get back an incredible #CGI shot. And this is just the beginning. Accessibility is the magic here. Anyone with a phone can do this. Capture > upload > process > boom - you’ve got a real environment stored as a 3DGS asset. Right before HalfRez in Chicago, I shot a few quick videos while walking around the city. Nothing planned, nothing fancy - just some passive captures while killing time. I processed them remotely, and now I’ve got three little Chicago Gaussian splats I can pull up whenever I want. Gaussian splats shine for exactly this: grabbing pieces of the real world and turning them into reusable 3D assets. I can drop them straight into OTOY Octane 2026 and treat them almost like standard 3D geometry. They’re perfect for: building out larger environments creating real-world set extensions capturing everyday places in tiny, efficient packages and storing “location assets” you can reuse later If you travel, or just find yourself in unique places, don’t forget the opportunity to take that world home with you!

DIGITAL TWIN UPDATE: The Unreal Engine digital twin project is CANCELLED! WE ARE OPEN SOURCING THE WORK!!!!!!! Instead, I'm building an end-to-end land management platform I'm calling Mazzap because it's an app and it's a map and also I'm Mr. Mazza. I'm also not calling a digital twin anymore; I'm calling it a V.E.I.L. which stands for Virtually Embodied Intelligent Land which serves the dual purpose of sounding way cooler and also conveys the long-term aims of the prject way better. With Mazzap anyone can easily generate a veil with nothing but publicly available data (and some photogrammetry objects if you so choose). Everything is perfectly georefrenced and you can right-click anywhere on your veil to get coordinates you can plug into google maps yourself. The next step for this is going to be building a survey companion mobile app so you can get field data yourself complete with attribute tables to drop in to get even HIGHER fidelity data than USGS. My stretch goal is using something like SAM 3D (but better) to generate georefrenced 3d tree assets based on the real trees on your land (which will eventually lead to growth and fruiting simulators based on your soil and hydrology data). Then again maybe that's not the next step; maybe the next step is plumbing in IoT devices so you can view assets in real time on your land. GPS trackers on the sheep, or maybe data from your solar controller. Or maybe it's up to you, because it's completely open source and it has an agents markdown file ready for your own coding agent to read and adapt for your purposes (did I mention this is vibecloded slop? sowwyyyy) Watch demo below and see how you can go from zero to beautifully rendered 3d map of your property in less than 15 minutes! This BlenderFusion paper basically says "screw trying to describe 3D edits through text" and just... use Blender :-) The idea is pretty straightforward -- instead of trying to cram 3D understanding into a diffusion model, use depth estimation & segmentation to project 2D images into 2.5D meshes, edit them in actual 3D software, then use a fine-tuned diffusion model to make the results photorealistic again. The clever bit is their "dual-stream architecture" -- the model sees both the original scene AND the edited Blender render in parallel, learning to preserve what matters while fixing the inevitable artifacts from transforming imperfect 2.5D/3D reconstructions. They train it with smart masking strategies so it learns when to ignore the original scene (for removals/replacements) and can manipulate objects independently of camera motion. What you get is pretty impressive control -- not just moving objects around, but changing materials, deforming shapes, swapping backgrounds, all while maintaining visual coherence. Neural Assets (one of my favorite papers last year) tried to crack this with learned object tokens, but it struggled with overlapping objects and loses fine details (due to low res DINO encodings). BlenderFusion just sidesteps the whole problem -- want to rotate something 173.5 degrees? Just rotate it in Blender. Want to duplicate an object 8 times? Copy paste away. The diffusion model's only job is making it look photorealistic, not figuring out the 3D underpinnings. The catch? Lacks temporal consistency for animation. Each viewpoint is generated independently, so while a single edit looks great, smoothly animating a car or camera down the street won't work -- you'd get flickering and inconsistencies between frames. That said, this approach is so much more intuitive for finer grain image editing than trying to describe your changes in text prompts. It's the kind of thing that makes you wonder why we're trying to do everything inside neural networks when perfectly good 3D tools already exist -- giving you the best of both worlds.

Fast Company just published a great piece on World Labs , Fei-Fei Li , Marble, and the idea that spatial intelligence / world models may be one of the next big shifts in AI. I was happy to be quoted in the article, but I also wanted to share more context about my own experience with World Labs and Marble, and why this direction is especially interesting to me. My starting point: volumetric capture — For the past few years I’ve been exploring and using volumetric capture and reconstruction (photogrammetry, NeRFs, 3D Gaussian Splats) mostly capturing locations around Montreal. Alleys, museums, urban interiors. I love every step of it: the capture itself, the pipeline, and what can be done with the output. Turning real spaces into real-time explorable systems. I do this personally, sharing explorations here, and professionally as chief technologist, and co-founder of Dpt. Physical reality + generative manipulation — In my work I’m especially drawn to mixing physical reality with generative and digital manipulation: using physical interfaces (light, clay, ink, ... ) to drive generative AI pipelines, building mixed reality prototypes that reshape your surroundings, or starting from real captured spaces and transforming them using tools like Marble. Like many people, I saw the World Labs announcement on Twitter in September 2024, and Marble when it surfaced in early December. But by then, I already had a sense something was coming. The first conversation — As someone deep into volumetric capture and radiance fields, I obviously knew about Ben Mildenhall and his pioneering work on NeRF. To my surprise, Ben reached out to me in late June 2024. He’d been following some of my experiments and wanted to chat about my process and workflows and how I was using this “stuff” creatively. At that point he didn’t share what he was building, but we had a genuinely great conversation about radiance fields, AI, and my work. He was curious about the creative perspective, not just the technical one. When the World Labs announcement dropped a few months later, it all made sense. I understood what Ben had been working on, and why the creative angle mattered to them. Then in August 2025, he invited me to try the Marble beta, and I’ve been experimenting with it since. Experimenting with Marble — The first thing I used Marble for was materializing scene and world concepts during ideation at the studio, and seeing if and how it could fit into our production pipeline. In parallel, I dove into a series of experiments focused on world manipulation: starting from real captured spaces and transforming them using Marble. I’d already been exploring that idea using img2img diffusion with ControlNet on NeRF renders, real-time video streams, and even mixed reality using headset camera feeds. But Marble brings something different. It generates persistent, spatially cohesive 3D worlds that can be rendered in real time across a wide range of devices. That’s a real shift. Experiment 01: Parallel Realities — The first experiment, Parallel Realities, starts from a volumetric capture of a real location, reconstructed as 3D Gaussian Splats. Using Marble, I generate an alternate version of that same space, something informed by the original architecture: abandoned, nature-reclaimed, alternate era. Then, using Spark (World Labs’ 3D Gaussian Splatting renderer for THREE.js) I make both realities coexist in the same spatial coordinate system. From there, I use a portal UX mechanic to let the user step between the real reconstruction and the Marble-generated version. Experiment 02: Hidden Depth The second experiment, Hidden Depth, does not transform a space as much as expand it. A captured location has a visual boundary (a mural, a doorway, a dark corridor) and Marble generates what exists beyond it. For example: a Montreal alley has a painted mural; step through it and you’re inside a world informed by what is actually depicted there. The 3DGS pipeline is becoming an increasingly compelling foundation for exploration, experimentation, and storytelling. What matters most to me right now is more control. The more I can steer the generated scene or world, the more useful the tool becomes. I want more features like the already existing multiple input images and Chisel, the blockout-based approach. I would like better local control, the ability to expand a generated world more and more while preserving coherence, and the ability to directly import 3D Gaussian Splat scenes to be used as a starting point. I want more ways to shape the result, not just a “prompt and hope” approach. — It is exciting to see this field moving from research and demos toward actual creative workflows.

Fast Company just published a great piece on World Labs , Fei-Fei Li , Marble, and the idea that spatial intelligence / world models may be one of the next big shifts in AI. I was happy to be quoted in the article, but I also wanted to share more context about my own experience with World Labs and Marble, and why this direction is especially interesting to me. My starting point: volumetric capture — For the past few years I’ve been exploring and using volumetric capture and reconstruction (photogrammetry, NeRFs, 3D Gaussian Splats) mostly capturing locations around Montreal. Alleys, museums, urban interiors. I love every step of it: the capture itself, the pipeline, and what can be done with the output. Turning real spaces into real-time explorable systems. I do this personally, sharing explorations here, and professionally as chief technologist, and co-founder of Dpt. Physical reality + generative manipulation — In my work I’m especially drawn to mixing physical reality with generative and digital manipulation: using physical interfaces (light, clay, ink, ... ) to drive generative AI pipelines, building mixed reality prototypes that reshape your surroundings, or starting from real captured spaces and transforming them using tools like Marble. Like many people, I saw the World Labs announcement on Twitter in September 2024, and Marble when it surfaced in early December. But by then, I already had a sense something was coming. The first conversation — As someone deep into volumetric capture and radiance fields, I obviously knew about Ben Mildenhall and his pioneering work on NeRF. To my surprise, Ben reached out to me in late June 2024. He’d been following some of my experiments and wanted to chat about my process and workflows and how I was using this “stuff” creatively. At that point he didn’t share what he was building, but we had a genuinely great conversation about radiance fields, AI, and my work. He was curious about the creative perspective, not just the technical one. When the World Labs announcement dropped a few months later, it all made sense. I understood what Ben had been working on, and why the creative angle mattered to them. Then in August 2025, he invited me to try the Marble beta, and I’ve been experimenting with it since. Experimenting with Marble — The first thing I used Marble for was materializing scene and world concepts during ideation at the studio, and seeing if and how it could fit into our production pipeline. In parallel, I dove into a series of experiments focused on world manipulation: starting from real captured spaces and transforming them using Marble. I’d already been exploring that idea using img2img diffusion with ControlNet on NeRF renders, real-time video streams, and even mixed reality using headset camera feeds. But Marble brings something different. It generates persistent, spatially cohesive 3D worlds that can be rendered in real time across a wide range of devices. That’s a real shift. Experiment 01: Parallel Realities — The first experiment, Parallel Realities, starts from a volumetric capture of a real location, reconstructed as 3D Gaussian Splats. Using Marble, I generate an alternate version of that same space, something informed by the original architecture: abandoned, nature-reclaimed, alternate era. Then, using Spark (World Labs’ 3D Gaussian Splatting renderer for THREE.js) I make both realities coexist in the same spatial coordinate system. From there, I use a portal UX mechanic to let the user step between the real reconstruction and the Marble-generated version. Experiment 02: Hidden Depth The second experiment, Hidden Depth, does not transform a space as much as expand it. A captured location has a visual boundary (a mural, a doorway, a dark corridor) and Marble generates what exists beyond it. For example: a Montreal alley has a painted mural; step through it and you’re inside a world informed by what is actually depicted there.
