There is a lot of confusion right now about the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena and the role of the United States submarine in this incident. So let’s understand what most likely happened. First, the attack took place in international waters near Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. Second, the submarine involved was most likely a US nuclear powered attack submarine already operating somewhere in the Indian Ocean region. Many analysts believe it could have been operating from the broader operational area around Diego Garcia, a strategic military base used by the United States and the United Kingdom in the Indian Ocean. Unlike conventional submarines, nuclear submarines can stay underwater for months, because they do not need to surface for fuel. The only real limitation is food and crew endurance. So the submarine could easily remain in the region, quietly tracking naval movements. Now here is the timing part. The Iranian warship IRIS Dena had recently visited Visakhapatnam in India to participate in a multinational naval event hosted by the Indian Navy. After the exercise ended, the ship left Indian waters and began sailing west toward the Arabian Sea. If the submarine was tracking it, the most logical moment to strike would be after the ship left the exercise area and entered open international waters. That is when the torpedo strike reportedly happened near Sri Lanka. Now the next question people are asking is whether this was legal. Under the law of naval warfare, if two countries are in an armed conflict, a military vessel of the opposing side becomes a legitimate military target. Warships can be attacked even in international waters. In this case, the target was not a civilian vessel. It was a military warship of the Iranian navy. So from a naval warfare perspective, this kind of strike is generally considered permissible during active hostilities.

When the US glide bomb struck the IRIS Shahid Sayyad Shirazi near Qeshm Island on March 4, the impact triggered an involuntary event that nobody in the coverage has fully examined: the stricken corvette spontaneously launched one of its own anti-ship missiles. The weapon fired itself. Not as a last act of defiance from a crew executing a terminal order. The structural damage from the strike activated the launch sequence without human input. That detail is the most technically significant event in the naval dimension of this war. The Shahid Sayyad Shirazi is the third vessel of the Soleimani-class, the IRGC Navy’s most advanced surface combatant. Pennant FS313-03. Commissioned February 2024. The class was Iran’s answer to the problem of contested littoral warfare in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz: a wave-piercing catamaran hull approximately 65 to 68 meters in length, composite construction designed to reduce radar cross-section, four indigenous diesel engines producing confirmed speeds of 32 knots with promotional claims reaching 45, and an armament package that makes every other ship in its weight class irrelevant by comparison. Six anti-ship cruise missiles of the Noor, Ghadir, or Nasir class on deck launchers. The composite hull reduces the radar signature that adversaries need to acquire targeting solutions. The VLS integration gives a vessel of this size a defensive envelope against air attack that most navies reserve for ships four times the displacement. The speed and fast-boat deployment capacity fit exactly into the IRGC Navy’s doctrine of saturation from multiple simultaneous vectors. A US aircraft dropped a single glide bomb. The ship caught fire. It spontaneously launched a missile. CENTCOM confirmed the strike. Multiple cameras captured the burning hull offshore Qeshm Island with smoke rising through the Strait of Hormuz. The spontaneous missile launch is the detail that defines the engagement. A VLS or deck-launched anti-ship missile under normal conditions requires crew input, targeting data, and deliberate firing authorization. When a strike disrupts the electrical and structural integrity of the vessel sufficiently to trigger an unintended launch, the weapon system designed to protect the ship becomes a hazard launched into the Strait of Hormuz at whatever bearing the launcher happened to be pointing. Every tanker, patrol boat, or allied vessel within the weapon’s acquisition envelope during those seconds faced a missile fired by a ship that no longer had a crew in control of it. No second-order casualties were reported from the spontaneous launch. The missile either failed to acquire a target, impacted water, or flew a trajectory that missed occupied vessels. The outcome was fortunate. The mechanism was not controllable. Iran commissioned this ship fourteen months ago. It was designed to be their most dangerous surface unit in the world’s most contested waterway. It fired its own weapon at the waterway it was built to control before going down.

🚨🇷🇺 NATO IN PANIC: RUSSIA’S FIRST ZIRCON-ARMED NUCLEAR SUBMARINE IS ENTERING SERVICE Russia’s Project 885M nuclear submarine Perm is expected to complete trials and join the Navy before the end of 2026. It will be Russia’s first multipurpose nuclear submarine built from the outset to carry Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles as standard armament. 🔸 The Yasen-M combines the concealment and endurance of a nuclear-powered attack submarine with Russia’s most advanced naval strike weapons. Its arsenal includes Zircon, Kalibr and Oniks missiles for attacks against warships and targets deep inland. 🔸 The submarine has a submerged displacement of around 13,800 tonnes, reaches 31 knots underwater, can dive to 520 metres and remain at sea for up to 100 days. 🔸 Zircon reaches speeds of around Mach 9 and can strike sea and land targets at ranges exceeding 1,000 km. Its speed leaves defending forces only minutes to detect the launch, identify the target and attempt an interception. 🔸 The missile has already been successfully launched from beneath the surface, but Perm turns that tested capability into the standard armament of an operational submarine rather than a launch from an adapted trial platform. 🔸 Surface ships carrying hypersonic missiles can be tracked by satellites, aircraft and patrol vessels. A Yasen-M can remain hidden beneath the ocean, change its firing position and attack from an unexpected direction. 🔸 The same submarine can hunt carrier groups and other major warships while holding naval bases, ports, command centres and infrastructure on land at risk. Finding Perm will be NATO’s first problem. Stopping its missiles after launch will be the second — and at Mach 9, the alliance may have only minutes to solve it.
