This mother/son duo provides a fantastic example. Shown here at 12-weeks-old, our hero “serves” by reaching out for his mother’s attention - making sustained eye contact, smiling, and babbling. When it comes to infants, however, lap reading can deprive babies of their favorite (and most important) sight: YOU. Which is why you might want to explore face-to-face reading as well. (With your baby facing toward you and the book simultaneously.) Developmentally, there are multiple benefits to allowing your baby to see you as you read together. Your little one is an expert at “reading” your face. This posture allows your baby to track your eyes to discover what you’re tuning in to. But it also stimulates the literal movement of our bodies. Watch what happens here when mom asks to see this little one’s dance moves - and provides her with an improvised beat. Not only does mom’s musical accompaniment light up her baby’s brain, but the resulting dance is great for her gross motor development - helping baby to improve her growing balance and coordination. Am I reading with my baby too soon? (Spoiler alert: No. Never.) A parent recently reached out with this very question, noting that her infant often seems more focused on her during reading time than on the books themselves. Perhaps she was just introducing them too early? In reality, it’s never too early. But it’s also important to realize that, in the earliest months of life, the goal of reading isn’t about your child attending to the text - or even to the illustrations. Reading with your infant is a social activity. It is an opportunity for bonding. It’s an opportunity to expose your little one to rich and varied vocabulary. If your baby spends the whole time looking at you, that’s just fine. In fact, it’s beneficial. As you read, your baby is attuned to the way your mouth is making all these amazing sounds. Watch this little one closely. Her eyes rarely leave big brother’s face. I can’t say with certainty that she even glances at the book itself. But we’d be hard pressed to suggest she isn’t eating the experience up! She knows from repeated readings that this particular book (“Moo, Baa, La-la-la!” by Sandra Boynton - who is, BTW, the patron saint of board books) is filled with new and unusual sounds - which she anticipates (and delights in) on every page. I’ve shared “first meeting” videos (between new siblings) in the past, but never one quite like this. What’s so remarkable about this special moment shared to IG by alexandralforte? For me it’s the very clear sense that this ISN’T the first conversation between big brother Everest and his new baby sister. It’s just their first chance to do so face to face… a new chapter in a relationship that’s already been well established. “Hi Avalon! It’s ME, Everest,” he explains, as if to say, “I bet you’ve been wondering what I look like this whole time.” What a perfect example to remind us that the hearing of newborns is established and functional - perhaps as early as 24-26 weeks of gestation, but almost certainly by 30 weeks, making it possible for infants to enter the world already familiar with the voices of special loved ones. (Especially mom, whose voice has the benefit of built-in amplification as it reverberates through her body.) Can’t you just imagine the conversations these two have already had? And all the many to come? Talk to your bump. Kudos to Mom and Dad for nurturing this special relationship even before baby Avalon entered the world. How lucky for them all!

There is nothing babies love more than faces. And this is doubly true for those of their most significant caregivers. Watch how mesmerized this little one is by her mother - and how carefully she studies the shape and movement of Mom’s face as she serenades her. Turns out, babies have very specific preferences here. Research suggests that newborns prefer looking at faces that are: - socially relevant to them (faces with direct gaze compared to faces with averted gaze), - happy faces compared to neutral facial expressions, - and, even shortly after birth, already strongly favor their mother’s face to that of a stranger. From 0 to 60 in X seconds… For years that’s been one of the benchmarks used by auto manufacturers to describe the rapid acceleration of the world’s most powerful cars. It’s also a perfect metaphor to wrap up two weeks of posts focused on the language acquisition of young children. Babies enter the world with cries and gurgles… advance rapidly to complex forms of babbling, and generally speak their first words within a year. Their vocabularies growing exponentially, they begin stringing simple sentences together shortly thereafter and by two years of age, become surprisingly powerful little communicators. From 0 to 60 in just a little more than 24 months. It’s really amazing to witness. I began this series with video of a baby’s first sounds, captured in a hospital maternity ward. So what better way to conclude it than with an example of the end result? I got such a kick out of listening to this little one, age two, discussing her exasperation over the family dog’s need to bark at… well, everything. Check out not only her complex vocabulary and grammar, but her expression and tone… The way her personality is exposed through her vocalizations. Listening to her it’s hard to imagine that roughly 18 months prior she’d not yet spoken a single conventional word. Talk about acceleration! 🏎️ Of course this isn’t truly the end point for language development. Her vocabulary will continue to grow throughout her lifetime, for example… but the foundations of her lifelong success have been laid… transforming not only her ability to communicate but the very ways she is able to think. This woman here has a restraining order and they search her for drugs and she tells the cop in the courtroom. I don’t like how that search went. And the cop didn’t like that So he beats her in the face over and over and over and over again in the middle of the courtroom and they call child protective services to remove the child from her custody because now she’s going to jail and being beaten in the face, I told you they like to beat on females So now they’ve got $1 million kid That’s how much this little baby is worth to them because they’re gonna take custody from this young mom beat her in the face and sell the child on the open auction block. They’re gonna say that she’s unfit and that she’s nothing but a criminal because she didn’t like how the officer searched her body But we don’t have that on freaking camera This is why they don’t like being recorded To see this girl get beat in the face just pisses me off and I know what they’re doing there after that little baby of hers because that’s worth a lot of money to take custody. It’s worth $1 million. 🇺🇸
