I’ve seen some vitriolic hate directed towards In a Violent Nature (2024), when by my perception, it’s what we want from scrappy horror movies. It boldly takes risks and doesn’t play by traditional rules. Isn’t this what we want? Even if you’re not a fan, it’s a big swing.

Very bizarre seeing people who constantly claim they want exciting original takes on well worn concepts just completely reject this one outright. To each their own, of course, but similar to Skinamarink, I’d rather more films like this than Friday the 13th riffs forever.

Even more baffling is it delivers with Terrifer levels of violence and gore. It's not like the film is blueballing people or full of uninspired recycled Jason kills. Sorry the slasher film was experimental and full of subtext?

The problem is it presents its violence as routine and horrific. There are flashes where we’re meant to go, “oh shit!” And thats decided by how the killer is feeling scene to scene. I feel like an asshole for saying it, but it’s closer to Haneke films in this sense.

I have a whole lot of thoughts on this one. If you don’t like it that’s ok, *but* I think this is a very important film on why slashers work, what makes them work, and what’s possible to do with them. It’s like a key to the genre.

It’s unnerving in ways that Tourist Trap put me on edge, which is quite rare. You’re right about it being a key to the genre. The perfect example of how taking just a slightly different focus on a tried and true story can completely change everything.
