A subtle hint Maria isn't real, she doesn't get soaked by the rain. You can see James gets soaked slowly, but not her. The reason he asks "Maria.. What are you talking about?" might be because he noticed the rain doesn't affect her, and he knows something's off about her. Before reaching the Maria ending, it's clear James hasn't regretted his actions. He's still dishonest and hides his motive behind excuses, to comfort himself, not Mary. Unlike in the Leave ending, where he's honest because he has truly regretted everything. Even when his memory of Mary confronts him about the truth, he barely acknowledges it, and then silently agrees when she says she was a burden. #silenthill #silenthill2 #silenthill2remake

If you go back to the Observation Room after encountering Pyramid Head, the intercom will turn on again. This time it will be Mary crying and asking "Do you hate me?" and James will get head tremors. There's a big hidden secret in this cutscene; The real reason Angela panics is because she notices someone spying on her and James. By hacking the camera we see that she notices them and talks to them, not to James, and by disabling music and ambience we can hear their footsteps and the rustle of clothes. While it's possible she saw her father, that person/monster stays there after she leaves, and spies on James while he digs up the director's box. It turns blank when James arrives at Lakeview Hotel, it disappears from the envelope after watching the videotape, and the envelope also disappears after the Pyramid Heads fight, when James accepts the truth. It's just another desperate attempt to trick himself. In the official SH2 novel he quickly understood her trauma even though she never told him, and he always excused her aggression because he understood her pain. An example is this scene. He knows she feels unwanted and says he's happy to see her (unlike her mother who didn't want to see her) because he wants to bring her some comfort. He also suggests they should leave the town together, even though he hasn't found Mary. He never suggested the same to Laura, even though she's a child and she's alone. Angela brings out a much more "human" and empathetic side of James that he doesn't show to any other character, not even to Laura or Mary. He even assumed Mary's letter was a cruel prank by his coworkers or neighbors, because he's on bad terms with them. "It was like some sort of cruel joke, conceived by a particularly malicious person. A joke played to mock James even though he was still heartbroken and grieving. Maybe it was one of his neighbors? Or perhaps it was one of his coworkers? At any rate, after he lost his wife, James took to drinking and began to conceal his sorrow with outbursts of anger. It affected everyone around him to the point that his coworkers didn't want to put up with his sullen behavior. Before long, he was treated like a trouble-maker. For that reason, he could easily see how someone could hold a grudge against him." Although he thinks other people are out to get him, just like Eddie, he doesn't blame them and acknowledges that he's the problem.
