🇯🇵📹 Japan's attacking sequence vs the Netherlands was very interesting. A back three in possession, Kamada dropping into the first line of buildup, with the wide CBs keeping the width and making forward runs. Frontline always on the move, creating gaps for each other.

As requested by Alex Miller yesterday, a look at our out of possession shape in the first half. 1: (10 secs) - Wednesday in a very narrow high block in a 523 out of possession. It only looked like this when the ball is central. Nowrich rotate (change positions during play) a lot and this narrow block denies central rotation. In this clip, they have had rotation in left back position as the CM has dropped into the area and left back on the last line. 2: 20 secs - When the ball went wide or started to move wide, the full back would advance up the pitch to pressure the full back and press full back to full back, whilst the CBs would come out with the Norwich forwards coming in between the lines, as this ball transitions across the pitch you see Sargent come out and Iorfa following tight. Fusire in this clip has come out to mark full back to full back and creating a makeshift back 4. 3: 47 secs - Wednesday get back into their narrow block shape 4: 56 secs - rotation from the front line form Norwich 5: 58 seconds, Palmer comes out of the back line to pick up the rotation and prevent space between lines. As the player turns to our left, Amass starts to come out to pick up full back to full back on the other side. In summary, Wednesday played their familiar 523 blocking shape out of possession but it was much more proactive in the back 5 than we usually see it, with full backs and Cbs following rotations and stepping out of the backline to prevent space between lines. It worked, first half. Norwich combated it a little better second half. Will get a clip out tomorrow of what they did

Red card tax helped, no doubt. But even before the pen, there were signs of improvement from the 1st half. First possession sequence: Cunha immediately drifts wide to hold width. His first action was to attempt the take on. That wasn’t there 1st half.

Buildup is always about who can find the solutions quickly. Gaps close and windows for progression shut in an instant. Max Alleyne’s first touch always opens up play, he can receive with both feet for quick & snappy combos. And he has the precision/ambition to play forward.

Up, Back and Through Possession 5v2 in the area in which the ball is. 🔵 Target is to get the ball from one end player to another. The ball must go through the central player on the line. The ball will either go into the central player, who will set to the run of one of the two wide players, or he will set back to the other midfielder who will again look for the run of a wide midfielder (Up, Back and Through). Both wingers will be on the outside lines of the half with the ball, when the ball is transferred the central player will move into the new area, one defender will follow into the other half and the two wingers will follow to create the 5v2. Motherwell In Possession I've been so impressed by Motherwell's performance and style this season. After watching back their 5-0 win from Saturday, I noticed a few key themes/principles of their play in possession: • Principle 1 - attackers occupy the spaces between FBs & CBs. This keeps opposition FBs pinned back and allows for moments to exploit opposition miscommunication. • Principle 2 - the "tapered box" in deep build-up: 2 CBs with wide positioning; 2 CMs with narrow positioning. Allows M'Well to comfortably progress the ball forward using diagonal & bounce passes. Attracts pressure from St Mirren, creating lots of space between defence & midfield to exploit. • Principle 3 - the use of 1-touch play to change the tempo. 1-touch passing disoriented St Mirren at times and didn't allow them to get appropriate pressure on the ball. It was also evident, especially on the left, that only 1 player needs to hold width (Longelo), Slattery was given a licence to roam inside and create overloads in the midfield, making it difficult for the St Mirren midfield. I genuinely believe if they had a proper goalscorer in the 1st part of the season M'well would have been top of the league as they have consistently been the best side.
