Jesus taught Sola Scriptura. Scripture teaches Sola Scriptura. We should listen to both. While rebuking the Sadducees, Jesus quoted Scripture: Matthew 22:31-32 “And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the... show more

That's incredibly anachronistic. Jesus provided all kinds of new teachings in addition to what was contained in the Old Testament. So, did the apostles.

It would only be anachronistic if Jesus were rebuking them for Scripture that had not yet been written. He rebuked the Sadducees for rejecting what God had already spoken to them in the Scriptures they possessed. The same principle applies today: people should be rebuked for rejecting what God has spoken in the completed canon.

You’re arguing that Jesus taught sola scriptura, yet he added his own oral teaching to Scripture. If supplementing Scripture is permissible, then it’s not sola scriptura. Notice what else Jesus did with the Sadducees. He didn’t just quote Exodus 3:6. He drew the resurrection out of a verse they had read all their lives without seeing it there. They had the text; what they lacked was the right interpretation, and Jesus supplied it with authority. The same Jesus told the apostles, “Whoever listens to you listens to me” (Luke 10:16). And “the completed canon” is doing a lot of work. Which verse tells us the canon is complete, or which books are in it?

Jesus literally rebuked sola scriptura Ye search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. - John 5:39-40

Jesus re-interpreted scripture many times over the prevailing view.

Are you implying the Sadducees were correct in their interpretation until Jesus reinterpreted Scripture?

Scripture is "God breathed". Just tell us where in Scripture is the instruction that God never has and never will speak to humans in any other way than Scripture.

Jesus taught Sola Scriptura for the Scriptures that weren't written yet.....

Jesus taught Sola Scriptura for the Scriptures that were already written at that time.

This is a logical impossibility. If Jesus' own teachings were not yet scripture, that would mean the previous ones held a higher authority than His own final teachings. Same in the Council of Jerusalem in Acts. This is a logical impossibility.

Jesus is God. His words are God’s words the moment He speaks them, with full divine authority, not waiting to be written. Scripture is also God’s words. Same Author, equal authority. When God speaks further, He adds to what He has already spoken. He does not create a hierarchy or a contradiction. Jesus treated the existing Scriptures as authoritative while He Himself spoke with equal authority (Heb 1:1-2). There's no logical impossibility here. The Council of Jerusalem was apostolic and Spirit-led. Its decision was later written in Scripture. That temporary apostolic authority did not continue after the apostles.

That would literally mean that at the moment Jesus spoke those words, that they were to be accepted prior to being scripture. Did Jesus send the apostles, as he Himself was sent?

‘Whoever hears you hears me…’ Immediate refuted. Next.

Luke 10:16 — Jesus is speaking to the 72 He was sending out on a specific mission to spread the Gospel. They were temporary representatives for that task — this wasn't creating an ongoing, self-perpetuating office that continues to speak with equal authority to Scripture for all time. Refutation denied. Context is key.

He Absolutly created an ongoing office perpetuated by the Holy Spirit Otherwise when He Ascended He would have left us a Bible, He did not, He left us a living Church Matthew 28:19-20 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” John 20:22-23 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” 2 Thessalonians 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle."

@ChristandGuitar Traditions you were taught.. not traditions you continuously make up.

@thedeepskar @ChristandGuitar Like how the Church Leaders "made up" a doctrine that Gentiles do not need to be circumcized? (Council of Jerusalem)

Jesus didn’t teach sola Scriptura. Some keep adding “alone” to teachings in Scripture. Sola Scriptura actually denies the promise of Christ, isn’t Scriptural, was never practiced by Jews nor Christians, and isn’t logical. It’s a modern manmade narrative.

No, he didn’t. Next.

Yes He did.

This story actually refutes Sola Scriptura. Jesus could have quoted from the Prophets which explicitly teach the resurrection from the dead but he doesn’t. Why? Because the Sadducees only recognized the Law as Scripture. There was no single Jewish canon of Scripture.

No it doesn’t. He quoted the Scripture they accepted because that was enough. He didn’t need to start a canon fight. He didn’t need to go outside it to rebuke them. He showed that even the text they claimed to honor already condemned their position.

Yes it does because 1) there was no single, self evident Hebrew canon, that’s made up. 2) it shows why Jesus quoted from Scripture in the first place. Not because Scripture alone has authority, but so that those listening might believe.

If Jesus taught sola scriptura We wouldn’t have the New Testament

Jesus never wrote anything down. Jesus taught necessarily through the oral transmission of the tradition. He Necessarily didn't teach or preach sola scriptura. Not only that, but John 5 is almost explicitly against it: John 5 37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. 39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. The scriptures simply testify for, snd speak truth. But to have Him, you must be within His Church. One must be Sent from those within the Church.

Cherry picking the Bible is a waste of everybody's time.

I agree. The Roman Catholic Chuech should stop doing it to prove non-biblical doctrines like the papacy.

It bothers you that belief in the Trinity, the Resurrection of Christ, baptism, etc., are directly related to the Bible?

All who deny Sola Scripture ends up creating a false man made gospel that doesn't save. Just that alone validates it.

Jesus taught "sola scriptura" did he? Oh, then just point out where he said that

Okay, so what you are saying is that only the Torah is inspired? Because the Sadducees only accepted the Torah?

💡🕯️🕊️ Simply put if it contradicts the Bible , then we should not consider it part of God's holy word , that's why we need to stick with Sola scriptura 1 Corinthians 4:6 " ..... brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written....."

Reading ACTS should prove without a doubt that there is no such thing ever as Sola Scriptura.

Be careful what’s behind your head. I can unsee big blonde hair like in street fighter.

Just here for the ratio

When He quoted Scripture it was to teach them what they were getting wrong, because they were relying solely on their own interpretations of Scripture. Also, I love that you cited where He said God is “God of the living”—the saints in Heaven are alive!

Protestants at it a again with your false claims again, imagine thinking CHRIST taught sola scripture yet its in CHRIST'S teaching that we rebuke and debunk faith alone 😂

"scripture teaches Sola-scriptura"

Imagine all this time, people(women especially) thought abortion was a constitutional right, only to be proven by the Supreme Court that it’s not because it’s not written in the Constitution. In the same sense, Sola Scriptura.

But wait. Don't I need to believe in the 3 persons in 1 being thing that's not in the bible to be saved?

Affirming Scripture is not Sola Scriptura. And it does, in fact, bind people to things not in Scripture. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 literally states to stand firm in the traditions taught either by word or letter.

Sola scripture is literally impossible, and the Bible doesn't teach it anywhere. Thinking it does only comes from your personal, fallible interpretations that are distorted by your manmade doctrines and traditions, which are merely your opinions. Only by you adding extra words from your manmade tradition can you derive sola scriptura from the Bible. Here's my latest sola scriptura takedown:

False dichotomy, argument from silence, and strawman. Recognizing Scripture as God's Word doesn't demonstrate that it is the only expression of God's Word. Something supposedly missing also does not prove it is wrong. And it is not missing. Paul tells us Sacred Apostolic Oral Tradition is equal in authority to Scripture. "Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours." --2 Thessalonians 2:15 Furthermore, Christ Himself is the Word of God. You cannot reduce Christ merely to Scripture. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth." --John 1:1,14

Yeshua taught the commandments of God.

Scripture is sufficient on Christians lives. It tells about parenting, marriage, how to live by the fruits ,our tongues. Church history will not get you to heaven, nor will church fathers or catechism. None of those were written by God. The word of God is WHAT we will be judged BY.

You can invent all kinds of whacked out religions by just stringing a few verses of the Bible together. The Bible is to be understood as a whole and you are conveniently ignoring all the things the Bible says about the Church.

Scripture is authoritative, but scripture does not tell us what belongs to scripture nor does it interpret itself. So, who (meaning human) determines what is to be considered apart of scripture and who authoritatively settles disputes about the interpretation of scripture?

Jesus was sola scriptura. Never once in His teaching did He quote from anything other than the OT scriptures.

God speaks to Moses from the burning bush Moses: "Um, where does it say that in the scriptures? I don't see that written down anywhere [yet], so it's not true."
