John Goodman is defined by his versatility. Few actors, if any, can absolutely nail drama and comedy like Goodman. And what’s more is that Goodman’s done it on TV and in cinema. He’s dripping with energy and charisma. I hope Goodman still has a few iconic roles left in the tank.

John Goodman celebrated his 74th birthday over the weekend & its actors like Goodman that made me fall in love with Cinema. Goodman’s never struck me as a guy who wanted fame or fortune- he’s just spent the last 50 years making good shit with good people. Goodman’s at his utter best when paired with the Coen Brothers. I consider all three of them creative geniuses. Long Live John Goodman 🎂.

The Color of Money finally won Paul Newman an Oscar and while many people criticize the win as a lifetime achievement award, I genuinely think Newman deserved the award. He’s commanding & charismatic as Hell in this film & he passes the torch to Tom Cruise. This was a performance worthy of an Academy Award.

Tom Cruise is profound in The Last Samurai. This performance is unlike anything else Cruise has done in his career. And while this movie earned 4 Oscar nominations, Cruise wasn’t one of them. I just don’t get the Academy’s affinity with constantly snubbing Cruise over and over.

Tom Cruise is my super early pick for the Oscar for Best Actor. I obviously haven’t seen Digger yet but it appears as if the stars are beginning to align behind Cruise: he’s marketing the Hell out of this film far in advance of its release (he was everywhere this summer, including the World Cup), his older films are being rereleased in theaters throughout the year, and the entire industry appears to be behind Cruise. As you all know, there’s a difference between who I think will win & who I think should win the Oscar. The “should win” portion comes after I see every film. But for now? The “will win” pick points to Cruise.

Michael Clarke Duncan earned an #Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding work in The Green Mile. I never really write about this film- I should change that. This is such a great late ‘90s movie with a vintage Tom Hanks performance. Great, great film.

A reminder that Mann & Cruise have worked together & when they did…it was sheer excellence. Collateral is some of the best work Cruise has ever done. It’s also an all-time great LA film.
