Michael Clarke Duncan earned an #Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding work in The Green Mile. I never really write about this film- I should change that. This is such a great late ‘90s movie with a vintage Tom Hanks performance. Great, great film.

Robert Duvall earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his work in A Civil Action back in 1998. I really enjoy this movie. A Civil Action isn’t perfect but there are so many excellent actors in this film, none better than Duvall. A truly fantastic legal thriller.

It takes an extremely charismatic actor to hold down a 2.5 hour film with no scene partners & nearly no dialogue. Tom Hanks did it about as well as it’s ever been done when he earned an Oscar nomination for Cast Away. The Hanks-Robert Zemeckis partnership has resulted in a lot of great Cinema over a handful of decades. This is film is perhaps their biggest achievement together, even above Forrest Gump.

The Imitation Game feels like it came out a lifetime ago. This earned Benedict Cumberbatch an Oscar nomination for Best Actor & while I’m not as high on Cumberbatch like some people on this app, I think he’s without flaw in this film. I’m also partial to historical dramas- they interest me in particular. Good film - great performance.

The Fisher King is one reason I love director Terry Gilliam. Featuring Jeff Bridges & Robin Williams, I’m not even sure what genre you’d classify this film in because it’s a combination of fantasy, comedy & drama. This earned Williams an Oscar nomination for Best Actor & won Mercedes Ruehl the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. This is a beautiful film.

20 years ago, Brokeback Mountain lost the Oscar for Best Picture to Crash. It’s a decision that I still think the The Academy wishes it could take back. Everyone always talks about Heath Ledger’s brilliance in The Dark Knight, but he’s impossibly great in this film, which also earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Director Ang Lee is a creative genius.

For the Love of the Game is constantly left out of the “all-time best sports films” conversation for reasons I can’t explain. I really value that this film was shot at old Yankee Stadium back in the ‘90s when the Yankees really had their luster. Kevin Costner tells a great story about the late George Steinbrenner attempting to cancel production at the ballpark & how it impacted production of the film. Costner’s love of sports - whether it be football, golf, or baseball - has heavily influenced his career over the years. This is absolutely some of his best work. Great story. Great film.

Eddington is a misunderstood achievement that was ahead of its time. I think this is the best performance from Joaquin Phoenix since he won an Oscar in 2020 & I think every last actor in this film, including Pedro Pascal, is excellent. Ari Aster is about as divisive of a director as there is on this here app, and while I don’t always jive with his work, I think this film is incredibly intelligent & a great commentary on our post-COVID lives.
