John MacArthur's advice on how to best read Scripture: "It's much better to read books than to read spotty and randomly around, because when God gave us His word, He gave us books. Set a book target and keep reading it over and over."

This is very good advice. Most of the misunderstandings would be cleared up by getting the entire message rather than snippets. Sound bite verses is a great way to get everything confused. Reading entire books gives the whole picture.

Exegetical, categorical, book by book, line by line is the only way to inculcate scripture.

I like to ask the Holy Spirit what I should read. (‘Acknowledge God is ALL of your ways and He will direct your paths’ Proverbs 3)

I took that advice when I first heard him say it. It really is beneficial. Such a cohesive way of studying scripture.

This has been my method since last year. I've heard a lot of criticism about it but I'm sticking to it.

He's right, but some verses or passages hold within them depth of meaning that requires a lot of cross-referencing to fully appreciate. It's not a straight reading through a book. How many times did Martin Luther read "the just shall live by faith" before fully understanding it?

FYI an alternate interpretation of creation has been discovered. Creation is the forming of Adam not the material universe. The wordings are metaphors for spiritual/psychological concepts. IOW the bible begins with the forming of Adam.

A Brother & I did this exact thing after we heard John McArthur say this abt 10 years ago. We read 1,2,3 John every morning for 30 days. It was very good! Wish I had kept doing this all these years. I still read by books, but not repetitively. You see so many new things when you read it like he suggested!! Thnx for the reminder !

There’s no right or wrong way to read a book. Whatever works for you.

My pastor recommends the same so last year I did the whole Bible . This year it's a slow meditation on the New Testament only .

Why listen to a Protestant about the Bible? None of you agree what the Bible means. Never have. Never will. Tens of thousands of Protestant denominations and millions of Protestant “Bible believers” who don’t agree with each other on novel doctrines never believed in the first over 1,500 years of Christianity. Absolute epic basket case disaster of error and confusion.
