@DrKeithLTaylor Allowing the public to just start googling ‘aliens’ and then try to evaluate the cess pool of dis/misinformation they uncover is irresponsible. Every country needs a contingency plan, but which SME’s are writing them? (I strongly agree we need a syllabus!)

Ufology needs to be saved from Disclosure. Ufology is (or ought to be) the study of the phenomenon itself. Disclosure is a movement aimed at getting the government to be more transparent about what it knows about the phenomenon. While it would be nice to have the information that the government has about UFOs to aid in the inquiry of ufology, it's not necessary. The phenomenon is not something that can be kept from us. We don't need permission or an intermediary to approach it. When we limit our inquiry in ufology to the carefully curated narrative of disclosure—one that has been built around the guiding values of national security, risk mitigation, and narrative control—we have amputated the better part of the knowledge we have about this phenomenon and rendered it inert. We have allowed state priorities to usurp human priorities. We have surrendered our agency. Disclosure is of critical, historic importance. I support disclosure whenever and however I can. But disclosure is not ufology. And when disclosure reaches its aims, it would be best served by a robust field of ufology that hasn't allowed itself to become toothless and atrophied in the meantime.
