Curt Cignetti describes the mindset and the steps it takes to be great. "It's a process and it's a way you go about doin' things. It's a standard, it's an expectation. A high standard, a high expectation, it's accountability. It's discipline, commitment, toughness, work ethic, pride." Greatness comes from what you consistently do. "It's wantin' to be great versus wantin' to be normal. And normal kind of equals average and average is okay." Average isn't bad - it's just not great. And greatness requires something different. "To be great you gotta have special focus, special commitment, special preparation and discipline, and the ability to say no to some things." It requires you to do be willing to do more. It means competing and bringing a mindset of excellence to everything you do. It starts with being intentional. "Every play has got a life and a history of its own. Play every play like it's nothin' nothin'. Don't be affected by success or failure. Be able to compartmentalize and go to the next play." That's the mindset - focus and execution over excuses. "You get to the end of the game, game's on the line, you're used to practicing that way, playing that way. You're just doin' your thing. That guy is lookin' at the scoreboard and he's tightenin' up a little bit." Anyone can go through the motions. But to be great, you have to practice like it matters.

Greg Brown on Hagens improvements and where he can play with the Bruins: "It's good to be able to play every position, because one, you just have the diversity of it. Two, when you go to your pro team, which would likely be the Bruins at some point, if they have centers, are you going to tell them you don't play wing? No, you're going to say, 'yeah, I can play wing.' "For him, he actually played both wings. So to have that experience and be successful that just gives him more dimensions. You want to be able to say 'yes' to any question they ask of where you can play, and he did that very well."

I don't know how to teach it to you except for I hope suffering happens to you. And I was fortunate that I grew up with my parents providing a condition for us to be successful on the one hand, but there were plenty of opportunities for setbacks and suffering. And to this day, I use the phrase pain and suffering inside our company with great glee. And I mean that. Boy, this is going to cause a lot of pain and suffering. And I mean that in a happy way, because you want to train, you want to refine the character of your company. You want greatness out of them. And greatness is not intelligence. Greatness comes from character, and character isn't formed out of smart people. It's formed out of people who suffered. And so if I could wish upon you, I don't know how to do it. For all of you Stanford students, I wish upon you ample doses of pain and suffering."

If your practices aren't more competitive than the games themselves, you're doing the wrong thing." That's the standard. How you prepare is how you are going to play. "Most of these teams and coaches have gotten into a mindset of resting players. 'Oh, it's too much. We're not gonna practice.' Light day, light day, light day." "Phil never gave us a light day. There was no days off. You show up and you work. You practice." You show up and do the work. No excuses or shortcuts. "Practices are going to be worse. They're gonna be more physical. There's gonna be more trash talking." "And I'm gonna let you know. If you didn't show up today, I'm gonna let you know. And it's gonna be embarrassing, and you're gonna hate it."
