A person asks Sadhguru, “How much weight training exercise do you recommend?” And Sadhguru answers, “Weight training is not useful, but do 25-50 Surya-Namaskars, it is complete exercise.” First of all, I am not sure why anyone would ask someone like Sadhguru, who is most of the time, in another dimension, a question on exercise and weight training. And secondly, Sadhguru is just plain wrong. Weight (or strength) training is one of the most important aspects of exercise regimen you can include in your daily or 3-4 times a week physical activity because there is great science behind its benefits. I advise my obese or sarcopenic (very poor muscle mass in advanced liver disease) patients to include weight training to improve clinical outcomes. The highest level of scientific evidence showed that standard muscle-strengthening activities were associated with lower risk of death in patients with non-communicable diseases – including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and lung cancer. Another metanalysis showed strong evidence for a considerable risk reduction of strength training for 60 minutes a week, on all-cause death (−15%), cardiovascular disease death (−19%), and cancer death (−14%). See here: here Sadhguru says the older we get, the better we do not weight train. He is again absolutely wrong. The findings of another systematic review/metanalysis support power (strength) training as an effective therapeutic intervention for improving physical function in adults diagnosed with frailty (poor physical function in old age) and patients with chronic medical conditions. See here: In fact, another study on strength training, this one again a metanalysis, concluded that strength training interventions can be used as a non-drug treatment for hypertension (!), as they promote significant decreases in blood pressure. See here: Strength training also reduces significantly, chronic inflammation as shown in another high quality systematic review and meta-analysis. See here: Resistance/Strength training improved muscle mass and muscle strength, thereby improving performance status. Improved performance status is a wonderful benchmark for an active and healthy life. See here: Even in fatty liver disease, independent of weight loss, exercise training was associated with 3 and a half times more meaningful treatment response towards lowering liver fat. Strength training is a powerful tool to maintain liver health. See here: and here Now Surya Namaskar. Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation is a sequence of around twelve yoga poses connected by jumping or stretching movements, varying somewhat between various Yoga schools – which means, it has no regulation or standardization unlike weight training. In Iyengar Yoga there is a way, in Ashtanga Vinayasa Yoga there is Type A and B and there are other types followed by other schools or Yoga teachers. Along with the stretching and jumping, which is done is a slow and steady manner, the practice includes chanting a “mantra” calling out twelve names of the Sun God. In its classical form, Surya Namaskar is not an exercise, and is not aerobic. The energy cost of exercise is measured in units of metabolic equivalent of task (MET). Less than 3 METs counts as light exercise; 3 to 6 METs is moderate; 6 or over is vigorous. American College of Sports Medicine and American Heart Association guidelines count periods of at least 10 minutes of moderate MET level activity towards their recommended daily amounts of exercise. For healthy adults aged 18 to 65, the guidelines recommend moderate exercise for 30 minutes five days a week, or vigorous aerobic exercise for 20 minutes three days a week. Surya Namaskar in its classical form has a measly 2.9 METs and in its rigorous form (some people perform mutated highly active forms of Surya Namaskar to make it feel like an exercise) can go up to 7.4 METs – which requires a lot of jumping and little stretching and no time to chant the Sun God names - does not even come close to strength training by any margin. Those who are part of the Surya Namaskar and Yoga cult would provide anecdotal experiences on its benefits (please see comment section) through non-classical forms and would call it an “exhilarating experience.” Experiences are not scientific, evidence are. Many Yoga journals and some dubious and third rate Ayurveda journals have also have published on such experiences in small group of patients, which are not validated or published in better journals [like this junk here: There are no metanalysis level data to prove effectiveness of Surya Namaskar as beneficial as aerobic exercise or better than strength training as Sadhguru claims. Do Surya namaskar if you are doing nothing. But upgrade to strength training if you want something. And stop listening to pseudoscience peddlers who speak religion and culture for your healthcare needs. Sadhguru suffers seriously from Dunning Kruger fallacy: a type of cognitive bias, where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs because of the fact that they don’t have enough knowledge to know they don’t have enough knowledge.

The best exercise for the brain you’ve probably never seen. According to Michael J. Lavery’s book “Whole Brain Power”, using a 4-pound sledge hammer to bounce a golf ball up and down dramatically amplifies both your neurological and physical demands Massive Central Nervous System (CNS) Activation The sheer weight of a 4-lb sledge forces the CNS to fire at a much higher intensity. Yoga and improved skin health and hair growth? India’s pseudoscience poster boy, Ranveer, aka Beerbiceps gets it embarrassingly wrong. Let us break it down. I am sorry this is lengthy, because – as per Brandolini's Law (aka the Bullshit Asymmetry Principle): It takes a lot more energy to refute bullshit than to produce it. Check out this video. In it, Ranveer “pseudoscience peddler” Allahbadia with over 8 million followers on YouTube and Instagram bullshits everyone in just 35 seconds. He showcases some major female movie celebrities and tells the viewers that the secret to their skin and hair is that they perform Yoga every day, especially a Yoga pose called the “Sarvangasana” or shoulder-stand or candle pose. His “scientific” explanation? The stance increases blood flow the scalp and head, and improves skin health and hair growth. This is utter nonsense. What happens to the blood flow, heart, head, and brain region when someone takes an upside-down stance? For that, you must know the meaning of one word – Homeostasis. Homeostasis is a self-regulating process by which human body maintains internal stability in its organ functions while adjusting to changing external conditions. This is also consists of “autoregulation,” the method by which an organ or tissue maintains blood flow despite a change in perfusion due to external (eg: body position changes) or internal (block in blood vessels) conditions. For example, we are normally supposed to walk on two legs or rest by sitting down or lying down. The heart rate, blood flow to all organs including scalp and brain is all maintained depending on the importance and metabolic activity of that organ. For example, at rest, highest proportion of blood flow is received by the liver (nearly 25% of cardiac output) which is 100ml/min per 100g liver weight. The brain receives 50ml/min per 100g weight, while the skin receives 1 to 3ml per 100g per minute. Organ tissues are usually considered as blood supply-dependent (e.g., heart and brain) and blood supply-independent (e.g., abdominal organs, kidneys, skin, and resting muscle) for oxygen delivery – meaning the latter WILL receive fixed amounts to maintain its functioning while the former requires changes to blood flow depending on various unusual situations. For example, in massive blood loss, the body will try to maintain blood flow into heart and brain rather than skin and muscle to maintain life. The blood flow is set in the body for proper functioning of organs and every time we try to change that flow, a healthy body will re-align that flow depending on the importance of the organ systems functions. So, when you do a shoulder stand or candle pose, the initial sudden change to the body position will be caught by the receptors in the blood vessels and heart which will re-align the flow to organs of importance, thereby maintaining critical functions that are required for health. Which means, the blood flow to the skin including the scalp, will be re-aligned to its required flow and DOES NOT increase to face and scalp or brain as India’s pseudoscience peddler mentions. In heavy aerobic exercise and changes to temperature related sweating or certain disease conditions, the skin blood can increase. Yoga is not a proper exercise as it is not an aerobic activity. Now Sarvangasana and blood flow – a study showed that heart and blood flow responses were NOT AFFECTED with this pose in healthy people. Even a complete head stand, called Sirsasana does not increase blood flow to the brain, forget the scalp skin, because of blood delivery homeostasis due to autoregulatory mechanisms. The claims for effects of Yoga on specific organs are complete bluff – a public duping started by B K S Iyengar who took Yoga to the international stage. Even in his authoritative books, he does not mention shoulder stand or candle pose to be useful for hair growth. In fact, he [nonsensically] mentions that shoulder stand will improve “thyroid health” (it does not), controls asthma (it does not), reduces disease of the throat (it does not) and prevents common cold (it does not, because common cold is caused by a virus, and not dependent on whether you stand, sit, lie down, and hang yourself upside down). Also, note that Sarvangasana (shoulder stand), Sirsasana (head stand) and Padmasana (lotus position) are the most common Yoga poses reported to cause an injury. In those with high blood pressure or heart disease, these poses may become life threatening. You can see those here here and here Yoga, especially shoulder or head stands do not improve skin health or increase hair growth by increasing blood flow. In fact, Yoga does nothing specific for organ systems functions since such evidence does not exist. A lot of pseudoscience peddlers who sympathize with Yoga will mislead you with many such magical benefits. So then, what specific exercise or action improves hair growth? We do not really know. There is some evidence, even though weak, for standardized scalp massages: good evidence for scalp cooling (prevents hair loss, may promote regrowth especially in chemotherapy patients) Speak with your Dermatologist on skin and hair health queries and not National-level baby-face poster boys of misinformation.

LIV Golf has made some significant changes during the off season to appease the OWGR application, including the drastic decision to move to the 72 holes. However, although they were accepted, the OWGR only gave them considerably reduced points and added a fake cut below 10th place. If LIV Golf were to make more changes, it’s likely that the OWGR would increase their points allocation in the future. But it could lead to the league completely losing their identity. Speaking after a first round of 5 under par 67 at LIV Golf Riyadh, the new captain of Smash GC, Talor Gooch, said about the situation: “Yeah, I think we all agree we need to stay us, true to who we are and what we are. We’re a global golf league that brings a totally different energy to the game. So we’ve got to continue to maintain the fabric of our character and who we are and what made us — what we started with in the beginning. I hope we don’t go too far down the path of replicating everything just to appease somebody. “At the end of the day, for the ranking of things, everybody knows the quality of golf that’s out here. It’s unfortunate that it’s not recognized in the way that it should be. I just hope we don’t lose ourselves in the chase for that. Like I said, for four or five years, we’ve experienced this and this being treated a certain way. After the Spain and France game, I tweeted this: “Collective quality outperformed individual quality.” This was just a sense. It was a feeling after the game that I quickly put into words, but I didn’t have any evidence for it. I didn’t have anything other than the feeling that I got from watching the game. So I decided to go into FIFA’s Training Centre and look up the match reports to see if I could find anything that would lead to the conclusion I had: that Spain were collectively better than France. At a glance, the answer was no. Other than expected goals, pretty much everything was around the same: complete passes, pass completion, possession percentage and ball progressions. If you look at the line breaks, you’ll see that France were actually a little bit higher, which makes sense because France typically like to play a little bit more vertically. However, there is one statistic that does show what I felt: offering to receive. France had 329 total offers made, distributed fairly evenly throughout the field, and 114 total offers received. Spain, on the other hand, had 438 total offers made. They made 236 offers in the middle third and 275 offers inside the shape. That is where the numbers really begin to differ. As FIFA defines it, an offer to receive is an off-ball movement that shows intent to support the player on the ball, either to maintain possession or progress the ball. Spain were constantly providing their teammates, through proximity, through closeness, and through angles and lines of support, an option to continue playing. That shows that, in moments when Spain have the ball, there are constantly three, four or five players moving and providing an option to continue to maintain possession. Spain play together. The player on the ball is rarely left alone to solve the moment through their individual quality while everyone else watches. There is an option, an exit plan, some way out in case they need it. Secondly, when we think about this Spanish style, we often think about one touch, two touch, pass, pass, pass. What we often fail to realize is that these players have so much ability on the ball. Even a right back has the quality to beat a player, get out of a press and continue the attack. Playing collectively does not mean removing individual quality. Their individual quality allows the collective to continue playing. Then there are the speed-up moments. Spain can maintain possession, move France, slow the game down and continue offering support, but when the moment to go forward appears, it is time to go forward. They recognize that moment of verticality and they accelerate. Then, if the possibility disappears, they slow down again and continue playing. There is another element of Spain. Once they have moved France back into their final third, they create these structures where they basically suffocate you. Any time the ball pops out, there are players ready to defend and ready to win the next ball in order to keep it going. The structure, the organization and the roles allow them to stay pressing, keep playing together and keep having the ball. Lastly, there is this type of football that I call football from the plaza, fútbol de plaza, where you learn to attack, dribble, pass and play in tight spaces. You learn these interactions and these one-two combinations, but you don’t learn them through the repetition of patterns. You learn them through doing it for your entire childhood in these tight areas. It is play, pass and go, play and go, constantly finding the next interaction and then finding that moment of verticality. That whole sequence shows exactly why Spain are Spain. To summarize, they are constantly offering their teammates support. My initial feeling that collective quality outperformed individual quality came from watching Spain play together, always offering options to the player on the ball rather than watching the player on the ball do something with their individual quality. They offer an option, an exit plan, some way out in case it is needed. The players are also able to escape individually when the collective solution is not immediately available. They recognize the speed-up moments and, when they find themselves in moments where they can go forward, they go vertical. Then they suffocate you through the structure and organization that allow them to win the ball again and keep playing together. And that last piece—the forward pass, play and go—is the kind of thing you get a lot from 3v3, 4v4 and 2v2 games. All in all, fantastic. So much fun to watch the Spanish team and so much fun to see all of their style essentially culminate into one match and, in this case, into one goal.

I've put together a straightforward protocol that seems to work quite well for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). A carnivore/lion diet works great for MS, but if you optimize a few nutrients and habits it can really improve your results and spur recovery. By just doing a carnivore/lion diet, there are now people who have not only put their symptoms into remission but have started to reverse their lesions on MRI. Some of these individuals will be in our upcoming case series on MS patients who are recovering using the carnivore diet. This full protocol can help even more. Dr. Chaffee's Protocol for Optimizing Multiple Sclerosis Recovery: This protocol outlines a comprehensive approach to supporting recovery from multiple sclerosis (MS), emphasizing dietary modifications, light optimization, and physical activity. 1) Dietary Intervention: The cornerstone of this protocol is a strict, high-fat, carnivore "lion" diet, predominantly consisting of beef and lamb, with 2g of fat for every 1g of protein, as detailed in my videos. All carbohydrates, sugars, and alcohol must be strictly excluded to induce and maintain ketosis, and to prevent further damage and inflammation to the nervous system. Ketones serve as the brain's preferred energy source and readily cross the blood-brain barrier, where they are converted into fatty acids, the essential building blocks for brain tissue. Prioritize grass-fed fats such as tallow, butter, or lamb fat, incorporating them into every meal for optimal results. Exclusively eating grass-fed meat is not required, these fats can be purchased separately. Grass-fed butter is readily available, as is grass finished tallow, and less often grass finished lamb. Bone marrow and even brain are excellent options as well. Wild-caught fatty fish is also acceptable; however, grass-finished lamb fat contains approximately 20 times the omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) compared to even oily wild-caught fish. DHA, EPA, and cholesterol are essential for myelin sheath regeneration on axons. 2) Nutritional Supplementation: For the first month, consume 50-100g (a few ounces) of liver daily. This can then be reduced to three times per week, with concurrent monitoring of B12 and homocysteine to maintain optimal levels. Maintain B12 levels between 800-1200 pmol/L or 1100-1600 pg/mL (American units). Homocysteine levels should remain below 7. If homocysteine is elevated, regardless of B12 levels, increase B12 intake. If liver consumption is not feasible, supplement with a methylated multi-B vitamin and/or sublingual methylcobalamin (methylated B12). Allow the sublingual dose (2000-2500 mcg daily for the first month) to dissolve under the tongue for at least five minutes before swallowing. Monitor B12 levels as described above and adjust accordingly. When testing B12 levels, discontinue B vitamin and B12 supplementation for approximately one week prior to the test to avoid artificially elevated results. Supplemental B vitamins can also interfere with other blood tests, particularly B7 (biotin). 3) Light Optimization and Circadian Rhythm: Optimize vitamin D levels and circadian rhythm by exposing yourself to direct sunlight for 30 minutes each morning, looking towards the sun (but not directly at it). Refrain from wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, or corrective lenses during this time. Direct, unfiltered sunlight exposure on as much skin as possible, including the eyes, is crucial, and multiple exposures throughout the day are beneficial. Minimize exposure to screens and artificial blue light, especially in the evenings. Wear blue-light-blocking glasses when using electronic devices or under artificial light after sunset. Remember that MS prevalence decreases closer to the equator; emulate these conditions as much as possible. Maximize vitamin D absorption by delaying showering for at least six to eight hours after sun exposure. Vitamin D is produced in the skin's sebum and can be washed away, particularly with soap. Absorption can take up to 48 hours, so allowing at least six to eight hours is essential. Vitamin D3 can also be obtained from wild-caught fatty fish and grass-fed animal fats. Reindeer Herder in Northern Mongolia 🇲🇳 Mongolia’s Tsaatan Reindeer Herders; a diminishing nomadic tribe who live in depths of Taiga in northern Mongolia are one of last groups of nomadic reindeer herders in the world. There about 400 Dukha people of 70-80 families live in communities, usually a group of two to seven households. Mongolian reindeer people life is completely dependent on Reindeer they herd, often moving their small encampment tepees 5-10 times a year in search of suitable weather and moss for reindeer. This vast region is home to several thousand square kilometres of natural habitat classified as taiga (boreal forest) located within the Shishged River watershed of Altai-Sayan mountains (largest mountain range in southern Siberia) and provides home range for world’s southern-most indigenous reindeer population and their herders – Tsaatan. Mongolia’s Tsaatan reindeer herders are Mongolia’s smallest ethnic minority – a community of nomadic reindeer herders with strong shamanist beliefs. Originally from Tuva in Siberia, they have historically inhabited the border region of Russia and Mongolia. Ethnically, community identifies as Dukha, but their lifestyle as reindeer herders earned them Mongolian name Tsaatan, which means roughly ‘with reindeer.’ At end of 20th Century Mongolian reindeer number decreased drastically from 2280 to 616. Thanks to number of organizations, individuals, foundations, as well as Mongolian government contributed the Dukha tribe to keep their traditional way of life and increase reindeer head. Mongolian reindeer herder Tsaatans proudly celebrated 2000 Reindeer Festival in August 2019. Indeed, Mongolia reindeer number reached 2690 by 2020. Tsaatans use the reindeer as the main way of transportation such as travel for hunting, collection of firewood, as a pack animal for seasonal migrations, visiting relatives and friends, and traveling to town for shopping and trade. Reindeer milk is part of Tsaatans' staple food from which they make cheese, milk tea, butter, and yogurt. A reindeer gives 96-100 liters of thick and rich milk during milking season. Tsaatans or Dukha people begin training reindeer for riding when reindeer are two years old ridden by children because adults are too heavy to ride two-year-old. However, ridden by adults at age of three when reindeer are strong enough. During nomadic movement, male reindeer usually carry loads weighing about 40kg while females carry up to 30kg. When weather is cooler, reindeer are vigorous and healthy. Dukhas usually settle down at an altitude of 2300m above the sea level, but 1800m in winter where they can be sheltered and avoid frigid winds. Snow is not an obstacle for reindeer to find and eat moss because they can dig in the snow with their hooves and find moss easily. Young males are castrated after mid-September when weather cools down. The end of September to early October is a mating season for reindeer. The gestation period for a reindeer is about seven months. Monthly, Mongolian government has been granting some amount of money both for adults and children in the community. Another source of income is tourism but it covers a few of the households depending on their encampment locations. Though, eco-friendly travel is vital. They randomly sell reindeer or its skin. Instead, hunt in mountains in autumn for winter food. Tsaatans have closest relation with nature and know how to use the herbs and plants for medicinal purposes or food. Surplus medicinal plants, berries, and pinecone nuts are sold in nearby towns or bartered in exchange for food and clothes. At a deeper level, it is the harmony that gives the entire process a clear sense of direction. Mendelssohn creates moments of tension through passing harmonies, non-chord tones and carefully judged modulations into closely related keys. Yet each expansion is meticulously prepared and ultimately resolved back to stable tonal centres. The work is constructed as a process in which no element exists in isolation. Each motif inherits material from its predecessor, is transformed into a new form, and in turn becomes the foundation for subsequent development. It is precisely this uninterrupted sequence of inheritance and transformation that gives the music its vitality. The same principle may be observed in the workings of the natural world. Struggling to improve your bench press? Here’s how to identify and fix your weaknesses to increase your bench Let’s start with some form tips Big Arch - Retract your shoulder blades and drive your traps into bench by digging them into the pad. Maintain that tightness throughout the duration of the lift Bend the Bar - Act like you’re trying to bend the bar before you lift off. This causes you to externally rotate elbows to engage your lats which is crucial for a heavy bench Deep Breath - Take a deep breath before lift off and hold it in until you lift the bar where you’ll blow the air out on the way up Keep wrists straight - Wrap up your wrists tight with some wrist wraps. Don’t let wrists go limp on the concentric (lifting portion of the press). You’re losing poundage if you do Lower the bar with control - This is where lats and rear delts come into play. Nice and controlled descent and hit just below pecs Keep the arch - don’t let the bar sink into your chest and lose your arch. Keep air in and core tight the entire lift. This shortens the range of motion and allows you to stay tight and in control of the bar Leg drive and act like you’re standing up off the bench - As you explode up, drive your feet and push the bar back as if you’re trying to stand up off the bench. Weak off the chest? Likely an issue with pec strength. Here’s some exercises to help with that: -Pause Bench (1-3 seconds) -Wide Grip Bench -Incline Barbell Press -Spoto Presses -Weighted Dips -DB Flat/Incline Presses Weak with the lockout portion of the lift? Likely a weakness in your triceps or shoulders. Exercises to help with that: -Close Grip Bench -Board Presses -Pin Presses -Floor Presses -Skullcrushers -Weighted Dips -Military Presses -Slingshot Press -JM Presses -Overhead Presses Few other pieces of advice: 1) Get that back as big and strong as you can! Makes it a helluva lot easier to control the weight and add stability if our lats can support the weight. This will also carry over into your squat and deadlift. Row, row, and then row some more. Pullups/Pulldowns like crazy especially before you bench to get blood flowing back there which will help you feel and engage your lats before you lift. 2) Get a mini bicep pump from some curls before you press. Nothing heavy but having some blood in the biceps can help with tendonitis issues and help protect your joints. 3) Warm up the shoulders using a resistance band to get blood flowing to the rear delts and loosen up the shoulders. Take a foam roller and scrub the hell out of your lats as well to loosen up your shoulders.
