When arunpai.theblrwalksguy announced the mega 26km New Year Day Walk from Jayanagara to Yeswanthapura, the buzz was palpable on the WhatsApp group - more than 700 joined. With my experience and considering its 7AM on Jan 1st, I figured a 100 will actually show up. To my utter surprise and joy, 300+ were there and came from koramangala, whitefield even yelahanka as you can see in the video! The walk is still on, almost reaching the destination with many of them determined to walk all the way. Arun’s Bengaluru history anecdotes and the conversations with strangers united for the cause and the unmatched beauty of our city makes it a great experience. I see #Walkaluru as a mass movement for pedestrian rights and a unique way for citizens to collaborate with civic authorities, parenting with them to make our city walkable and acknowledging their work. From poura karmikas to Chief Secretary everyone felt a degree of ownership and that’s just amazing. Kudos to arunpai.theblrwalksguy and his team for taking on this mission and making everyone a part of it. Kudos to every one that joined. As a senior citizen told me at 6:45AM this morning, attitude about footpaths changed once Maheshwar Rao.M, IAS started walking as soon as he took over. I tend to agree!

Throwing garbage carelessly on roads, footpaths, and public spaces and then blaming bbmpcommissioner and Maheshwar Rao.M, IAS is not a solution. Civic responsibility begins with the people. Cleanliness is not only the duty of the administration; it is a basic civic sense that every citizen must practice. Dumping waste “here and there” reflects negligence, indiscipline, and a complete lack of respect for the city we live in. At the same time, civic sense cannot grow in isolation. It is also a genuine request and responsibility of BBMP and GBA to provide proper infrastructure for waste disposal. If garbage bins are placed on every street, at regular and accessible points, people will be far more likely to use them instead of littering the roads. Public convenience plays a critical role in shaping public behavior. So the real question is not one-sided blame. Is it the fault of citizens who lack discipline and basic civic sense? Or is it the fault of the administration for failing to provide essential facilities and systems?The truth is, both share responsibility. Citizens must stop using the absence of bins as an excuse to litter. Carrying waste home or disposing of it properly is a small but necessary act of responsibility. Clean cities are built by mindful citizens, not by slogans and complaints alone. However, authorities like BBMP and Greater Bengaluru Authority must also step up by ensuring adequate bins on every road, regular waste collection, awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement of rules. Only when civic sense from the people and efficient administration from authorities come together can we expect clean streets, healthier surroundings, and a city we can truly be proud of.Cleanliness is not optional. A humble request From a Concerned Citizen of Koramangala 🙏 A citizen reported this and she said she live in the area. Her first spot in the morning at 7am is this ox chewing on food and plastic. She stepped out at 2am today for a walk and was surprised to see the ox spends so many hours here from night till early morning. While she is very glad the animal is getting the unused food, she request @deobbmp to cast some rules where food can be separated from the plastic bags - so both things serve their equal purpose. She also suggested that which are mention below 1. Making a designated area in the same street/or the back side (under a tree) where a drum can be placed. All brands can dump the unused food in the drum. They can collect plastic waste in plastic bags, but keep these bags out of reach of animals. 2. Specify timings of the drum. 12am-5am Between 5-6am municipality picks the leftover and then it goes to bin, not directly. 3. The staff working here are responsible for cleaning the branch out before closing. Allotting one of the staff to collect waste or leftover in one bucket through the day, so EOD dumping in common drum becomes hassle free. . A Women’s Safety Walk is being organised in Delhi, and I came here to see what it’s about. After arriving, I was told that men aren’t allowed to participate. Maybe that’s because the society I come from—men included—has not always made women feel safe. Still, I think this is a meaningful initiative: “Women Walk at Midnight”, where women come together and walk to reclaim public spaces at night. This walk is also being organised in Chandigarh and other cities across India. I’ve added their Instagram account at the end of the video—go follow them and check out their work.
