5 facts you didn't know about Kung-Fu Master, the classic 1985 Commodore 64 game from Data East (Developed by Berkeley Softworks): 1) On level 1, you could hold down the Shift Key and G for a gun, as seen in the video. This only worked on level 1. 2) An add-on to the gun cheat: press Shift and G and stand still for 1 second to show "By Chris Hawley" and then reset to the start. 3) Chris Hawley never made another game. 4) The USA Floppy disk was a Flippy Disk. On one side was the Commodore 64 version and on the other (flip it over) had the Apple II version. 5) The game is loosely inspired by the Jackie Chan movie Wheels on Meals. Have you watched it, and do you see the similarity? Bonus fact: You may recognize the developer, Berkeley Softworks, from GEOS. This game and Karate Champ were the only two games they made before creating the very successful GEOS for the C64.

Did you know Xenon was actually the very first game from the legendary Bitmap Brothers? This 1988 vertical shooter on the Commodore Amiga kicked off their iconic run with that signature metallic look: smooth scrolling, the awesome tank-to-fighter jet transformations, massive bosses, and pure high-energy action that defined early 16-bit greatness. Absolute classic that still holds up today! Did you know the digitized face that pops up saying "Level One" was Bitmap Brother Eric Matthews! Xenon was also the first Amiga game ever to crack the UK Top 40 software charts which was usually dominated by Commodore 64 and Spectrum games. The game is legendary but from memory after you blasted your way through the game, it just looped back to the start, (correct me if my memory is faulty) those sort of endings were a major disappointed especially when you have dedicated so many hours into the game! Do you remember playing it?

Thrust on the Commodore 64 (Firebird, 1986) is still one of those games that punish you beautifully. I love it! At first glance, you realize this is a game of physics, inertia-based physics, and fuel management. I wish I did better at school LOL! Luckily, it's also a game of common sense too, phew! Towing the precious Klystron pod while desperately trying not to smash into cavern walls all the while avoiding turret gunfire, this was the ultimate stress back in the day, and we loved it. And Rob Hubbard's title music? As always, Rob delivers; that's why he's my favorite Commodore 64 SID musician. You may recall, last year I gave away 100 digital editions of his book The Master of Magic on this X channel. This month I am giving away a Commodore 64 Ultimate to one lucky SUBSCRIBER! Being a subscriber is $3 USD/month with monthly giveaways and exclusive videos. Zzap!64 magazine rated it a massive 94% "At last!! A version of Gravitar which plays just as well as the original. Although not being a totally faithful copy, Thrust adds its own elements and comes up with one of the most addictive and playable arcade games." Absolutely agree with this rating and Zzap!64's love for this game. What about you guys, was Thrust a favorite of yours too?

Robocop the movie was made into an equally impressive Commodore 64 game...with an issue! Released in 1988 by Ocean Software, it was infamous for being rushed out incomplete. On Level 4 (the warehouse/factory stage), the game hits a massive bug where the graphics become completely corrupted and the level is nearly impossible to finish. Developers reportedly lowered the time limit on purpose so most players would never reach the broken part. That aside it was an awesome game, Zzap!64 magazine rated it a solid 89% and described it as "Good blasting fun from the outset. It's tough but it'll keep you hooked" Despite the bugs, the game has excellent visuals for the C64, Robocop himself has great sprite work and the music by Jonathan Dunn, top notch. Are you a fan of this game, did it give the movie the props it deserved? Finally, did you somehow manage to complete it?

Tron turns 44 today — released on July 9, 1982. The craziest part? This groundbreaking “computer movie” was snubbed by the Academy for Best Visual Effects. Why? They ruled that using CGI was basically cheating and gave filmmakers an unfair advantage over traditional practical effects and hand animation. That “cheating” technique is now the foundation of every major blockbuster for the past 20+ years. Well done, Tron. The future you predicted won. ⚡ Bonus wild fact: The official Tron arcade game (released by Bally Midway right after the film) actually out-grossed the movie. While the film made about $33–50 million worldwide at the box office, the arcade cabinets sold around 10,000 units and raked in an estimated $100–200 million in quarters during its peak years. It even won Coin-Operated Game of the Year. What amazes me most is that there was never a proper Commodore 64 adaptation. Almost every other big 80s sci-fi movie got turned into a C64 game… but the one literally set inside a computer world with light cycle races? Nope. (There was a late, unrelated Tron-like game in 1989, but nothing official at the time.) Mind-blowing.

I grew up with the C64 (early 80s) as so many of you here. My very first game ever, the one that my brother and I played to death, was Falcon Patrol (1983) designed by Steve Lee. If there is one sound I will remember until my final days, it will be the refueling sound of the jet. What was your first computer and the very first game you played on it? (Not a game that you played at your friend's place or at the arcades - but the first game on your very own first computer)

Did you know B.B. King was a legit computer nerd? 🎸💾 The King of the Blues owned a Commodore 64 in the early 80s and fell completely in love with the Commodore Amiga starting in 1986. He had at least two Amigas on the road and a souped-up one in his Vegas studio. He called his main Amiga “Lucille II” and used it to write songs, program drums, lay down horn sections, and arrange entire tracks with software like Bars & Pipes and Deluxe Music Construction Set — then he’d just play Lucille live on top. Straight from a 1987 AmigaWorld magazine interview: “I use it primarily for learning songs… I enter melodies from sheet music and then play along in real-time with Lucille. It’s real useful and lots of fun.” While the rest of the music world was slow to go digital, B.B. was out here sequencing blues on an Amiga computer he grinningly called his second lady. Absolute legend — on stage and in the studio. 👑

42 years ago this month: Summer Games was released on the Commodore 64! (Epyx, 1984) The game that launched an entire legendary series Up to 8 players competing in events like 100m Dash, Platform Diving (my favourite event), Skeet Shooting, 4x400m Relay, and the infamous Pole Vault (so hard). It was the game my parents and sister all came together to play, creating lifelong memories. Even though it was the OG of the series, it is still one of the best-feeling multi-event sports games ever made on 8-bit. Who else still gets competitive over the diving scores? Did you score straight 10s?

Choplifter (1982) Commodore 64 Originally released by Brøderbund in 1982 and created by Dan Gorlin for the Apple II, Choplifter was later ported to the Commodore 64 by Dane Bigham. Did you play "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" on your Commodore 64? Zzap!64 magazine rated it 72% "On the C64, at least, Indy gets a really quite good game. The main sprite is well drawn and animated, complete with stubble on his chin. Background graphics are generally good, with the Zeppelin stage nicely replicating the air sickness-inducing swaying of the Amiga version. Sound is a disappointment - spot FX only - but there's a good title tune. Actual playability is improved by being that vital bit faster, and with five loads this is a good value for money package."

I previously had some early sort of precursors to the Atari system, and then I got the Atari system, which I'm sure a lot of people here have played. But then I saw you could actually have a computer where you could make your own games, and it was a Commodore VIC-20. So that was the first computer I bought. And then I got some books on how to teach yourself programming. And this was like the coolest thing I'd ever seen. So I was just like, this is super awesome. And so I started programming games and then selling games in order to actually buy more games. So a bit of a circular thing. And more games and better computers and that kind of thing. Today is the release day of the Star Fox remake. Unfortunately, it’s coming out a few days later in Korea, but it still brings back a lot of memories of when the original Star Fox 64 was released on the Nintendo 64. Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 were incredible games, but Star Fox 64 was also a huge hit when it launched. Unlike its predecessor’s simple linear progression, it introduced all-range mode, allowing players to freely fly around a 3D space during certain missions and boss battles. This made the gameplay much more dynamic and varied. It also added a new 4-player versus mode, which was a lot of fun with friends. The graphics were impressive for the time, and the full voice acting helped make the game far more immersive. Most importantly, Star Fox 64 was the first Nintendo game to support the Rumble Pak. What is now considered a standard feature in game controllers essentially started here. The shock of feeling controller vibration for the first time was far beyond anything I had imagined. I pre-ordered my copy a long time ago and have been eagerly waiting for it to arrive. Hopefully it gets here soon! Has anyone else ordered this game? 😆

The Simpsons Arcade Game (1991) is a classic side-scrolling beat 'em up by Konami featuring cartoon graphics and 4-player co-op. Goal is to rescue a kidnapped Maggie across Springfield locations. Also has brand new recordings by the show's voice actors. Among the three best-selling arcades of 1991, together with Street Fighter II and TMNT: Turtles in Time. Ported to the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS PC in 1991. Later released digitally for the Xbox 360 (Xbox Live Arcade) and PlayStation 3 (PlayStation Network) in February 2012, though it was later delisted.
