Here is another haptic feedback experiment with hand tracking. This time there are more boxes! Or cuboids, for greater scientific rigor. I tried using different haptic patterns for different hover effects — it worked very well. Really, haptics are a missing piece in the hand-tracking experience to make it feel solid. Tools: Unity3D + C# MR Device: Quest3 Haptic device: HapticLabs's Prototyping Kit Music: PO-12 and Orchid

Never underestimate the speed at which visionOS is evolving. Just three weeks later, with the latest beta, the Logitech Muse now supports almost any app and can be used for input across the entire system. I tested it with my favorite drawing app, TouchDesk, and it’s incredibly smooth – it feels just like using an Apple Pencil since you don’t even have to press a button to draw. You just touch the desk. There’s no lag, and it even provides subtle haptic feedback while drawing. The last time I reviewed it, I wasn’t entirely sure I could recommend it, but with the new system-wide support coming to visionOS, I think it’s now a must-have for every Vision Pro enthusiast.

This might be the most fun I’ve had in Vision Pro yet 😅 In AR Helicopters, you can fly your own miniature chopper using any controller connected to the headset (I used my Switch Pro Controller). While I love the hand and eye controls, the strong haptic feedback of the controller really enhanced the illusion of actually flying the helicopter. The occlusion and sound effects made it feel like a real, physical toy. It just goes to show that after being a productivity powerhouse, a multimedia heaven, and a thousand other things — Vision Pro can also be a very expensive toy for adult children! I’m just glad there wasn’t a real pilot in that helicopter 😂 🔊 Sound on!

Happy to share that my PhD paper "Scene2Hap: Generating Scene-Wide Haptics for VR from Scene Context with Multimodal LLMs" has received a Best Paper Award (top < 1%) out of 6,730 submissions at ACM CHI (ACM CHI Conference), the most prestigious conference in the human-computer interaction field🙌 Scene2Hap is an LLM-centered system that automatically designs object-level vibrotactile feedback for entire VR scenes based on objects' semantic attributes (e.g., whether and how the object vibrates) and physical context (e.g., the object's density, spatial relationships). It then renders real-time haptic feedback across the scene, calculating vibration propagation based on LLM-inferred material properties. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to address the problem itself: "designing haptic characteristics of a whole VR scene with one click." Thanks a lot to my co-first-author Easa, Sara Safaee, Paul Strohmeier, and my advisor Jürgen Steimle!

Another reason I’m interested in UMI style grippers is that tasks that‘d take 10s for a human take 5x as long with teleoperation. The lack of haptic and force feedback makes it hard to do movements relying on them like here, passing an object from one hand to another. Adding to that: teleoperation means you’re standing a meter away from the objects you’re operating on, and here for example, the box is obstructing the view of the PCBs. For the first time, you can distill Llama 3.1 405B's capabilities into a smaller, more practical model for your use case. First, here is the link where you can play with Llama 3.1 for free: The model is hosted in Tune Studio, an end-to-end platform for developing applications using Large Language Models. They are sponsoring this post. Take a look at the attached video. It will show you how you can fine-tune a simple model using Llama 3.1 without leaving the platform: 1. You can create an empty dataset 2. Use the playground to generate and record interactions with Llama 3.1 3. Modify the dataset directly using the playground 4.
