Some Major Methods Phone Thieves Use to Evade IMEI Tracking: 1. IMEI Modification or Cloning Skilled thieves (or repair shops) use specialized tools/software to change or spoof the IMEI number. Hardware Modifications Replacing motherboard components, microchips, or other parts to bypass locks, reset protections, or alter device identity. This can disable tracking features entirely. 5. Selling in Parts or Destroying the Device Breaking the phone down for components (screens, batteries, etc.) or destroying it eliminates any chance of tracking the original device. Important Note: Even advanced IMEI tracing technology has no guarantee of success because these evasion tactics are widespread. IMEI is primarily useful for blacklisting (making the phone unusable on networks), not precise real-time GPS-style location tracking.
