We had a chance to check out seven minutes of broadcast quality Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PS5 Pro footage. Big image quality improvements over base PS5's perf mode, improved performance - and even comparisons vs the 30fps graphics mode have some surprises:

Digital Foundry tests PSSR 2 on Alan Wake 2 and it's a dramatic improvement. "No image quality complaints from me whatsoever. And it shows that performance modes on PS5 Pro can easily exceed the IQ in the quality modes on the PS5." "Like FSR2 vs DLSS, it's a huge upgrade"

To me there's no way these differences are worth a 2 year wait. PS5 (and even PS4) is better than PC in places (pop-in, SSR, volumetrics, effects, audio). PS5 Pro's going to make differences even more insubstantial, potentially more in its favour. The kicker is Steam hardware survey data shows only 25% of PC gamers have a GPU notably more performant than a base PS5, let alone a PS5 Pro. #GodOfWarRagnarok #PS5 #PS5Pro #Steam Link to full Digital Foundry God of War Ragnarok PC analysis below. Granted I'm sure patches will rectify some or all of these things eventually.

Aggressive shader compilation and traversal stutter on PC in 2026. 😐 Digital Foundry describes it as "astonishingly bad". Let's just say I'm glad I bought the #PS5 version of Silent Hill Townfall and have a PS5 Pro. Full link below. Edited vid attached

Resident Evil Requiem is "brilliant" on PS5 Pro, says Digital Foundry. - Ray tracing is ONLY available on the Pro - Only console with a 120 FPS mode - 120 FPS mode on the Pro is equal to the 60 FPS mode on base PS5 Base consoles look good but the Pro gets some massive upgrades here. Full video:

Resident Evil Requiem is a "class apart" on PS5 Pro and a "true showcase for the system's capabilities", says Digital Foundry: ▪️PS5 Pro is the only console with ray-tracing (reflections and RTGI) ▪️PS5 Pro features "remarkable" temporal upscaling solution and 'looks close to native 4K' Base PS5/Series X ▪️All versions run at 60FPS, base PS5/Series X "noticeably less sharp" than Pro ▪️120FPS/non-RT mode is exclusive to PS5 Pro, supports VRR and is "visually identical to base PS5 and Series X" ▪️Among the best character models in any shipped game ▪️Series S image quality is "not great" but runs smoothly, no hair strand system Full Video ▶️ #RE9 #ResidentEvil #ResidentEvilRequiem

Assassin's Creed Shadows | Digital Foundry PS5 Pro Analysis "Possibly the most transformative PS5 Pro upgrade we've seen so far" Full Video ▶️ Details ▪️PS5 Pro features RTGI [Ray-Traced Global Illumination] at 60FPS, which is only available on base PS5 and Xbox Series X at 30/40FPS ▪️Image quality/resolution seemingly the same as PS5, but addition of RTGI is a "game changer" to visuals, "enormous difference" ▪️Increased resolution in quality mode ▪️PS5 Pro adds ray-traced reflections in quality mode (though not really a 'transformative' difference) ▪️Balanced Mode at 40FPS (at 120Hz output) is higher resolution on Pro #AssassinsCreedShadows #PS5 #PS5Pro #Xbox

🚨 NEW: Digital Foundry responds to criticism why they don't cover "Xbox vs PlayStation" comparisons like they used to. They cite several reasons: lack of review codes, time, PS5 Pro is usually the best version, low viewership for Xbox content. (Source:

Metal Gear Solid Delta is poorly optimised on all platforms and it's disingenuous to use it as indicative of typical PS5 Pro advantages. Even in its infancy PS5 Pro's often delivering on Cerny's target of it achieving PS5 30fps mode like fidelity, only at 60fps. Numerous tentpole games this year show sizeable improvements. Battlefield 6 Beta - "Substantially" better IQ and up to 55% better fps than PS5 in performance mode. Assassin's Creed Shadows - Generationally tansformative RTGI/fidelity mode settings, but at 60fps. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 - Fidelity and graphics settings of PS5's 30fps mode, but at 60fps. Death Stranding 2 - Near locked 60fps with similar IQ and fidelity as PS5's 30fps mode. Monster Hunter Wilds - Far superior image stability and more consistent 60fps vs PS5. As someone who bought a PS5 Pro at launch, I can absolutely say it's been worth it for me, and I'd struggle to go back to the base system. There will always be outliers like MGS Delta, but they don't represent typical improvements PS5 Pro generally brings. Much like PC releases with issues like shader compilation or traversal stutter, or more general bugginess vs console counterparts, it would be unfair to use those things as indicative of PC gaming performance improvements in totality, or to conclude all PC gaming hardware is a scam lol. Context matters. Video compilation. #PS5Pro #PS5 #DigitalFoundry

New Mark Cerny PS5 Pro Technical Seminar. Some interesting info. GPU is a hybrid of RDNA tech Base tech - RDNA2.X (RDNA2 + 3) Ray Tracing - RDNA4 Machine Learning - Custom Not fully RDNA3 to reduce workload for ports/code. Doesn't have RDNA3 shader executables and double floating point calculations, though it does have other RDNA3 and custom features such as extra vertex and primitive processing, more shader instructions for ML etc. Not having double FP is why Tflop count is 16.7 Tflop and not 33.5 Tflop, but Tflop count difference is "meaningless", esp to real world performance, and they didn't need 32bit calculation bump. Though interestingly PS5 Pro still retains 8 operations per lane for 67 Tflops of 16bit performance. Custom ML hardware has 300 TOPS of performance. PS5 Pro also has over 1GB of extra GDDR6 ram for games vs PS5, thanks to extra DDR5 system ram that many OS operations have been moved on to. Ray Tracing is roughly 2-3x faster than equivalent PS5 performance. ML hardware are PlayStation custom additions to RDNA that they themselves designed in collaboration with AMD. #PS5Pro #PS5 Full video below

Path Tracing on PS5 Pro even as a demo and at 30fps, pretty much confirms at least some games will use PT on PS6, which I said months ago but some said I was crazy for suggesting. PC gamers won't want to admit it, but next-gen the gap between console and higher end PC may shrink in terms of real world differences, bolstered by more competent RT and AI upscaling tech in the next-gen consoles. Keep in mind Valve already confirmed what Steam data already showed, that "the steam machine is equal or better than ~70% of what people have at home", and the Steam Machine is reportedly similar in perfomance to the BASE PS5. In regards to PT in F1 on PS5 Pro, I say drop the base resolution further (there's examples of PSSR 2 looking great even at 864p) and give us 40fps or higher. Also, this is a reason the future/RDNA4 RT tech and custom AI hardware in PS5 Pro was noteworthy. The "2-3x" PS5's RT performance Cerny quoted clearly wasn't just PR bluster. Outside of this demo, it's already allowing WAY better RT than PS5 in some games (Cyberpunk, F1, AC Shadows etc), with better image quality and/or perfomance to boot. Such demo's show there's potentially more to extract, especially for quality modes. #PS5Pro #PS6
