Denzel Washington & Tony Scott made five films together between 1995 & 2010, and the best of those five films is right here in Man on Fire. I think this might be Denzel at his most ruthless - even more than Training Day & definitely more than American Gangster. Denzel unleashes in the back-half of this movie in such a violent, unforgiving way. Scott pulled the best out of Denzel- and Denzel’s best is all-time great.

Honestly had no idea people disliked Man on Fire (released OTD in 2004). I get it: the editing’s frenetic and Tony Scott shoots every scene like it's a car chase, but a 39% RT rating is nuts. It’s one of the most Denzel Denzel movies ever. What am I missing?

Christopher Nolan says his father forced him to abandon his filmmaking dreams to get a "real degree" after film schools refused to accept him "I didn't go to film school cause I couldn't get into film school" His father's advice: "he advised me 'go and get a real degree in a real subject. So that you have that to fall back on and then you could go to film school afterwards'. Which turned out not to be the case" "I studied English, because that was the academic subject that I was best at and inclined most towards" "it greatly informed my filmmaking process, my writing process. I started to become more at ease with a lot of the literary concepts that underlie film criticism"

The previs workflow is still leveling up! My AI filmmaking process is starting to feel less like wrangling AI and more like animation. Still just cubes in Blender, but now I’m moving the character through space and doing a handheld camera follow. Same basic process: 1. Generate a start frame in Midjourney 2. Block out the scene in Blender, animate the camera 3. Feed both to Seedance Seedance nailed the gritty handheld feel and followed the character movement around the car way better than expected. You can get way more ambitious with your directing than I thought.

I also didn’t realize what it took to make this film & how close each actor got given they were all stuck in a tank together. Bernthal’s interview makes me appreciate a film I already love even more.
