Max Hodak envisions a brain-computer interface inspired by Avatar: a living, high-bandwidth “13th cranial nerve.” Instead of implants, his team is grafting stem cell–derived neurons into the brain via hydrogel. A biological USB cable -- 100,000 electrodes, a billion synapses.

We can’t even reconnect severed CNS neurons, but now we’re going to slap on a new device that’s going to somehow grow into the brain and functionally wire a new cranial nerve. One thing at a time, buddy. This idea remains a complete fiction.
