Stolen cellphones, laptops and other materials were recovered. Another drug kingpin was arrested in Hillbrow, where authorities discovered a residential building being used to produce crystal meth, among other illicit drugs.

According to preliminary information, the TRU officers responded to a tip-off and proceeded to recover a suspected stolen vehicle. While processing the scene, SAPS members from Bekkersdal arrived and arrested the JMPD officers. The charges brought forward appear to lack substantive basis. The officers’ service firearms, vehicles, and mobile devices were confiscated, and they were detained over the weekend. It has also been reported that JMPD Internal Affairs officials were not given information when attempting to inquire about the arrests. 48 hours after carrying out coordinated raids of drug gangs perpetrating drug deals and related crimes in Gowon estate, the Taskforce, returned to 31 Rd and the adjoining streets of Wole Omo Osho, Bless Jah, Adenle Crescent and Okunola Rd in Mosan-Okunola LCDA in Alimosho LGA in a mop up exercise for the most extensive clean up operation to end the activities of drug peddling and use in the entire area. The operation which commenced at about 1800hrs of Thursday 28th November, 2024, led to the arrest of 43 suspected sellers of illicit substances and criminal elements who have converted the entire area into a safe haven for unlawful drug activities. A significant mix of different illicit drugs, viz a viz substances suspected to be Kanedian Loud Hemp, prescription drugs, Codeine Syrups, several Weighing Scales of illicit substances, Indian Hemp Crushers and knives were recovered from the suspects. Neighbouring shop owners who conspires and conceal the illicit drugs for the peddlers and same recovered in their shops were arrested while those in whose shops nothing incriminating was found were warned to concentrate on what is displayed for sales at their various shops and never to join in such illegal act. Also, all makeshift/ shanties used for the drug activities around the entire area were demolished during the operation and operatives were deployed with blackmaria stationed for sustenance. Breaking news :📍📰 🇿🇦 On Friday, members of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) attached to the Zonkizizwe Precinct, working together with the EMPD Towing Division, recovered three vehicles reported as hijacked. The recovery followed information received from members of the community, who had repeatedly reported the particular property to local authorities. According to residents, despite several reports, no meaningful action had previously been taken. Community members also alleged that a known police officer had been actively protecting the property and ensuring that law-enforcement officers did not enter or search it for stolen vehicles. It is alleged that the police officer reside in Germiston however even in the middle of the night, he responds whenever other officers are at the property Acting on the information received, EMPD officers proceeded to the property to conduct an inspection. Although no one was present at the premises at the time, officers made several discoveries. A white Isuzu bakkie with false registration plates was found on the property, with the assistance of the Benoni Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU), further checks were conducted and it was established that the vehicle had been stolen in Seshego. A further inspection of the yard led to the discovery of various vehicle parts. The front section of a hijacked white Nissan Impendulo tested positive in connection with a Springs case, while additional parts belonging to a hijacked Hyundai Tucson were identified and linked to a Vosloorus case. While EMPD officers were still on scene conducting investigations and loading the recovered evidence onto a towing vehicle, an off-duty police officer arrived. The officer, based at Eden Park SAPS and attached to a unit dealing with trio crimes, allegedly confronted and harassed the EMPD officers, demanding to know what they were doing at a property belonging to his friend. Video footage recorded at the scene appears to show the officer, identified as Sergeant Zwane, behaving in an intoxicated manner. Community members who witnessed the confrontation further allege that at one point Sergeant Zwane drew his firearm.

Statement: The MMC Public safety Dr Mgcini Tshwaku expresses profound outrage and concern over the unlawful arrest of five dedicated members of our Tactical Response Unit (TRU) and two officers from our Vehicle Recovery Unit by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) at Bekkersdal SAPS. This incident, which occurred during a legitimate vehicle recovery operation, highlights a disturbing pattern of interference and hostility that undermines collaborative law enforcement efforts in Gauteng and endangers public safety. On 17 October 2025 , TRU officers received credible intelligence information regarding a stolen vehicle and Acting swiftly the team located and initiated the processing of recovering the vehicle at the scene. While the JMPD officers were securing evidence and preparing for impoundment, SAPS officers from Bekkersdal station arrived unannounced and proceeded to arrest our team on baseless and fabricated charges. In a blatant abuse of power, SAPS confiscated our officers’ personal firearms, cellular phones, and official vehicles, detaining them over the entire weekend without due process. When JMPD Internal Affairs investigators arrived at the station to demand accountability and clarity on the arrests, they were unceremoniously chased away by the Bekkersdal SAPS who refused to provide any explanation on the arrest and charging of JMPD tactical personnel engaged in routine duties. Further deeper information gathering investigation by JMPD TRU and K9 reveal that the vehicle in question is believed to belong to a notorious zama zama (illegal mining syndicate) kingpin operating in the West Rand area . It remains deeply puzzling—and frankly suspicious—why SAPS Bekkersdal chose to arrest JMPD and recovery team mid-operation rather than offering assistance to process the scene and seize assets from high-level organized crime. This raises serious questions about potential conflicts of interest and whether certain elements within SAPS are prioritizing protection of criminal networks over public safety. The JMPD officer are due to appear in court and there has been a confusion where which one they will be appearing on. Their matter is not on courts , but we were told that they will be appearing. We are being taken from pillar to post. The JMPD unequivocally calls on Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni to intervene immediately in this matter. We demand a thorough, independent investigation into the conduct of the Bekkersdal SAPS officers involved, including their motives for the unjustified arrests and Transparency and accountability are non-negotiable; the people of Johannesburg deserve law enforcement agencies that work together, not against each other. The JMPD remains committed to serving and protecting the residents of Johannesburg with integrity and resolve. We will not be intimidated or deterred from our mandate to recover stolen assets, dismantle criminal syndicates, and ensure safer streets. However, incidents like this erode public trust and embolden lawbreakers. This incident is indication of deeper problems within SAP, hence the department has welcomed the establishment of Adhoc Committee on the investigation of allegations of General Mkhwanazi and noted also the Madlanga Commission establishment. Further deeper information gathering investigation by JMPD TRU and K9 reveal that the vehicle in question is believed to belong to a notorious zama zama (illegal mining syndicate) kingpin operating in the West Rand area . It remains deeply puzzling—and frankly suspicious—why SAPS Bekkersdal chose to arrest JMPD and recovery team mid-operation rather than offering assistance to process the scene and seize assets from high-level organized crime. This raises serious questions about potential conflicts of interest and whether certain elements within SAPS are prioritizing protection of criminal networks over public safety. The JMPD officer are due to appear in court and there has been a confusion where which one they will be appearing on. Their matter is not on courts , but we were told that they will be appearing. We are being taken from pillar to post. The JMPD unequivocally calls on Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni to intervene immediately in this matter. We demand a thorough, independent investigation into the conduct of the Bekkersdal SAPS officers involved, including their motives for the unjustified arrests and Transparency and accountability are non-negotiable; the people of Johannesburg deserve law enforcement agencies that work together, not against each other. The JMPD remains committed to serving and protecting the residents of Johannesburg with integrity and resolve. They were all found during a warrant in Birkenhead carried out as part of Operation Vanguard on Thursday 23 July. A total of 66 people were arrested and weapons, cash, drugs and stolen property seized after 45 warrants were executed across Merseyside as part of the third Operation Vanguard carried out by the force. More than 300 police officers were deployed in Liverpool, St Helens, Knowsley, Sefton and Wirral conducting early morning warrants, roadside checks, land searches and more in a sustained and relentless offensive against criminals operating in our local communities. A 43-year-old man from Birkenhead and 24-year-old woman from Leasowe were arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods, acquiring/using/possessing criminal property, possession of a Class A controlled drug (cocaine) and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. They have been bailed while enquiries continue. 🚲 Our officers have checked each bike against those already reported stolen in the force and now we are appealing for the public’s help. APD announced that they arrested 112 people during a three-week, zero tolerance operation along the Central Avenue corridor. APD reported that their GANG unit, FAST unit, and their Narcotics units conducted a proactive operation with the assistance of Field Services Bureau Proactive Response Teams (PRT). During the operation, officers arrested 112 people, cleared 106 felony warrants and 38 misdemeanor warrants. The operation focused on out in the open (plain sight) drug use, drug trafficking, active warrants and maintained a high visibility presence along the Central Avenue corridor. During the operation, the narcotics unit focused on targeting drug trafficking along the east Central corridor. Detectives highlighted the arrest of Kyle Kamm for trafficking a controlled substance. Through the investigation, it was learned that Kamm was armed with a 9mm handgun during multiple drug transactions. This arrest resulted in the following: Approximately 500 fentanyl pills 9mm handgun Ammunition Drug trafficking paraphernalia Felony charges APD says that this specific case highlights the potential violence that can occur during drug transactions where a firearm is present. APD went on to say that there has been a decrease citywide in aggravated assaults and shootings, primarily through the Central Avenue Corridor. For the first time in recent years, the Southeast area command has seen a 9% decrease in aggravated assaults and shootings. During their operation, Southwest PRT also assisted in the apprehension of Charles Madrid, the suspect involved in the fatal stabbing that occurred this past week on a bus. As part of their ongoing efforts to combat violent crime along the Central corridor, APD implemented a second swing shift PRT team. It has been created specifically for the violent southeast area command. APD believes that their re-allocation of police resources and specialty units along Central Avenue during different times of the day, including evenings and nights, are a contributing factor to the decrease in violence and proactive results.
