I've open-sourced my runtime nanite mesh creator! You can use it to create nanite meshes from your own geometry at runtime. It's extremely cheap as all it does is transcode vertex data into the nanite format. (link below) #ue5 #gamedev #indiedev

Sticker Wall – Mesh Transform using Metal Shader 😍 One of my favorite parts of Apple iMessage Sticker interaction is actually the Mesh Transform effect and how you "peel" stickers on and off from the surface. Slowly adding to my tool stack for Hallway . This is a spline patch making a mesh that is wrapped from UV space onto the model. There's also setups to unwrap meshes on the surface back to UV space. Working in UV space enables a lot of procedural workflows. #b3d

Proxy Meshes aren't always ideal because many of the vertices are filler. They have to be in the right place to complete the surface shape and you have to worry about keeping the shape clean. But for simple shapes or clean curved surfaces, why not use curves directly Previously I've solved this by lofting the proxy mesh from a simpler set of curve profiles, but why not skip that and just define the Normals with the curve profiles directly? With typical Data Transfer modifier this isn't an option, but with Geometry Nodes it is no problem. And potentially gives much more control over interpolation and rigging.

Indiedev day 79: retro wireframe renderer with trackball functionality! As someone noted, my retro UI was missing rotating wireframes, I added one! In the drone loaout screen you can now see a very low poly version of the drone in proper retro fashion! I created a cross platform wireframe renderer and trackball funcionality to interact with the mesh. For fun I also made a world space position floor function for the mesh vertexes so that the mesh jitters a bit when it rotates, mimicking the unstable 3D geometry from games in the 80s and before. The UI is still completely unfinished, but I decided to post the cool wireframe feature as I just finished it today. #indiegame #buildinpublic

Gave Astra a 3D scan of my parents old home to make it an editable scene. Then I turned down gravity and opened a portal. Turns out multimodal LLMs might have crossed the chasm on inverse graphics. Tremendous implications for everything from VFX and AR/VR to robotics. Process: ~400 2D photos I took in 2019 went through RealityScan and became a photogrammetry mesh. That’s the classical reconstruction step. Then I dropped that mesh into Blender and used Astra to turn it into a fully editable, cleaned up 3D scene. Asked it to use textures from my photo scan and create procedural 3D shaders for the rest. It's good but it’s definitely not perfect -- funny thing is some of the mistakes are inherited from the reference mesh RealityScan produced i.e. the bird statue’s legs, contours of the furniture etc. This is where humans still have much better “spatial autocomplete” and can take an output like this all the way. My next step will be to see if I can let it use CUA with the photoscan software to interactively reference the source pixel imagery and refine its work in Blender and get even closer to reality.

If you've tried the proxy method before, you know that it can be difficult to get good results as you need the right topology and shape for good Normals, and also for it to fit to the face properly for a clean transfer. The solution is to use two proxies: one for the shape, and one for the fitting. But that gets cumbersome! And it is still often unintuitive to get the correct shading shapes. The next major feature of the addon will be aiming to solve these problems by providing a convenient proxy mesh that you can fit to your character's face with some rig controls, and then handles the rest under the hood with Geometry Nodes. All the benefits of complexity without having to deal with it yourself! This clip shows the general idea, but is early stages. I'll be sharing more as I build it out.

After my performance optimisations I hit a wall of memory. I could have strayed into streaming or mesh shaders, but first I chose to tame the beast within. I went from 64 million to 256 million grass blades while VRAM dropped from 10 GB to 5.4 GB by shrinking my instance format from 64 bytes to 10 bytes. The how is in the comments. More soon, friends.

Putting the finishing touches on the Anime Face Normals proxy. Still setting up the geometry nodes modifier inputs and other controls. It is easy to adjust the placement and shape of the shading with the rig, and the modifier has options for the shape of the interpolation, and automatic mask setup that blends back to the mesh Normals on the forehead and below the chin. The Proxy Normals modifier automatically feeds into the Laplacian Smooth modifier to benefit from smoothing and Weighted Normals. There's a lot more planned to give more control of the number of curves, points on them, interpolation+falloff, masking, and more. But I'll save those for future updates and not make the wait longer!
