Shane Wighton, from the YouTube channel Stuff Made Here, used 3D-printed tooling to form a sheet metal component as part of a concept validation process. Metal manufacturing is essential for all areas of the economy. Because of their strength, stiffness, and long-term durability, metal components are used in applications from appliances to construction parts and car body panels. Traditional metal manufacturing techniques include forming, casting, molding, joining, and machining. Sheet metal forming involves various processes where force is applied to a piece of sheet metal to plastically deform the material into the desired shape, modifying its geometry rather than removing any material. Sheet metals can be bent or stretched into a variety of complex shapes, permitting the creation of complex structures with great strength and a minimum amount of material. Sheet metal forming is the most cost-effective forming procedure today for manufacturing parts in large quantities. It can be highly automated in factories or, at the other end of the spectrum, manually operated in metal workshops for small series parts. It is a versatile, consistent, and high-quality procedure to create accurate metal parts with limited material waste. From metal cans to protective housing for hardware, parts created by sheet metal forming are found everywhere in our daily lives. Standing more than 1.5m high (5ft), it is one of the most complex, probably THE most complex metal-printed part ever created. Noyron allows us to engineer these objects, but it takes intense collaboration to push the limits of the production process, and encode the real life constraints into to our Computational Engineering Model. Shown last at Formnext in Germany, you will now be able to see at TCT Asia in Shanghai (March 17-19).

These stainless-steel beads form a powder that is over six times finer than flour, meaning each particle is too small to see with the naked eye. Powders like this are the basic building material of a type of metal 3D printing called "laser powder bed fusion" or (PBF-LB). It works by spreading out a thin layer of metal powder and using a powerful laser to melt the powder together into a specific shape. Then the process continues by laying down a fresh layer of powder on top and repeating. Each layer is leveled off by a wiper. It’s like the way you might level off a cup of flour with the back of a knife. To make a good 3D-printed part, the powder must be spread in an even, consistent way. Now, thanks to NIST research, we can watch the powder spreading and study its behavior. This work will improve the consistency and quality of metal 3D printed parts. LEAP 71, a Dubai-based AI engineering company announced today the successful test firing of a liquid rocket engine created entirely through Noyron, the company’s Large Computational Engineering Model. The engine was designed autonomously without human intervention and then 3D-printed in copper. The engine with 5 kN (500 kg / 1124 lbf) of thrust, generated the expected 20,000 horsepower, and completed all tests, including a long duration burn.
