He was amazing! Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Steve Vai were the top 3 80’s guitarist. Honorable mention Randy Rhoads, George Lynch, Warren DiMartini, Slash, and Nuno Bettencourt.

It's all subjective and often comes down to the music one likes. Personally, EVH was a fabulous guitar player but SRV, Frank Zappa, Prince, Billy Gibbons, Santana, even jazz players Emily Remler, Larry Carlton or Pat Metheny's music appealed to my tastes more. He was elite.
A better guitar player in the 80's? The decade of the guitar virtuoso? There were so many great players who came out of that decade and none of them were "better" than the other. It's all very subjective.
