Nintendo had a plan to build a CD-ROM adapter for SuperFamicom. Sony suggested it and it almost came out like that picture. But Nintendo overturned the project and Sony developed a prototype. A few years ago, I built a prototype with a real PlayStation 1 based on that picture.

Nintendo had the right to not go thru with it they would lose everything all their IP and even console would be Sony properties. Instead they invested with rare to make donkey Kong country.

Between Nintendo and Sony (which, realistically, are the only two Japanese companies that can release a traditional console on today’s market), I would push for Sega to do something on the hardware side of their portfolio. They were ahead of their time at least a couple of times.

When Sony first announced that they were going to make a game console, I remember thinking, “Is that really possible?” At the time, Nintendo and Sega had already dominated the market for two generations, and NEC was also building a solid presence of its own. My biggest doubt was about first-party games. Even if they could build the hardware, it was hard to imagine a console succeeding without strong first-party titles. That’s why I always felt NEC was a step behind Sega and Nintendo. Now it’s already been over 30 years since the PlayStation launched—32 years this year—and I never would’ve imagined back then that it would rise to form a two-giant system alongside Nintendo. Looking back, there’s no doubt that Ken Kutaragi was an incredible figure for making PlayStation a reality. A lot of us have great memories with PlayStation, don’t we?

NHK aired a dramatized documentary on the creation of PlayStation! Father of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, went to Nintendo and made a deal to create a sound chip for the SNES that allowed for 8 sound channels instead of 3. After that they began to collaborate on a CD based add-on. But just as Sony were about to announce the partnership, Nintendo backed out at the last minute to go with Philips instead. Ken Kutaragi was shocked and furious. He said 99.9% of people in Sony wondered why Sony are trying to make games and tarnish the brand. However, in the following management meeting Ken Kutaragi stood up in front of then Sony CEO Norio Ohga and said “is our company the type to give up like this?” He proposed his plan to use Sony’s latest technology to create their own game console. Sony CEO Ohga responded “Then give it a try. Do it!” And the Sony PlayStation was born!

Developer Brian “Biscuit” Watson revealed that Sony once created a plug-and-play console shaped like a DualShock controller, with a PlayStation 1 built inside it. The idea was simple: plug the controller-console into a TV and start playing. The device had an SD card, and around 10 games could fit on its 4 GB of storage. The controller-console ran on batteries. I sometimes feel like the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 were the last “true” console gaming systems. Starting with the PlayStation 3, things began to overlap more with PC, and it started to feel a bit like a PC-like platform. Of course, exclusives still helped set it apart from PC, but it didn’t quite have the same unique identity that the PS1 and PS2 had. Maybe that’s why I still really love those two systems to this day.

Has anyone here played Final Fantasy XVI, the latest numbered title that came out three years ago? Personally, I had a really great time with it, but it was definitely one of the more divisive games among Final Fantasy fans. What I loved most was the story and presentation. It felt like the kind of visual spectacle I had always imagined while playing Final Fantasy games over the years. The summon battles were absolutely breathtaking and felt truly cinematic. That said, because it wasn’t a traditional turn-based RPG and didn’t even have a real party system, a lot of people criticized it as “basically Devil May Cry with a Final Fantasy skin.” Honestly though, after Final Fantasy XV disappointed many fans by feeling overly stretched out and unfinished, Naoki Yoshida — the producer who famously turned Final Fantasy XIV into a huge success — was brought in to create a polished and complete experience as efficiently as possible. In that regard, I think the project was a success. I’m already looking forward to Final Fantasy XVII, whenever that finally happens. But realistically, it probably won’t come until after the third part of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth remake project is released.

Do you know The Simpsons animation? Konami made an arcade game using the Simpsons IP, and it was a lot of fun. I naturally expected it to be ported to home consoles and waited for it, but in the end, it never came out on any console. Interestingly, though, it was ported to PC. It had a few shortcomings, but I have great memories of playing it on a 386 computer and having a really good time. Anyone else play it?

Sydney Pollack on 'The Yakuza' (1974) & the differences he had with Paul Schrader while making the movie: "I think 'The Yakuza' (1974) is a terrific picture. I think it is one of the better pictures that I have done. it's not an audience picture at all. it's a picture that got fairly well received critically. [but] nobody went to see; it it's an oddball movie that very few people even know. but it's a movie that I like a lot. It was Schrader's first big break. He's a very talented guy and again I had a similar problem working with him, not quite like [working with] Milius but but it was a taste problem. In other words, he was an ex-critic and a real film buff and his models for everything were films that he'd seen before and he had approached everything from a sort of a genre point of view; "let's have a little violence in the first 10 minutes then we can have some later". I kept saying I know what that means all I know is the scene doesn't work but he & his brother were terrific and they were both good and they came over while we were shooting. Robert Towne came into the rewrite for me on that and I got to work with Mitchum who is just wonderful to work with and Brian Keith and Richard Jordan, some real good actors and a wonderful Japanese camera man named Kozo Okazaki and spent a lot of time in Japan and I think that's a pretty damn good picture." (Sydney Pollack's interview with John A. Gallagher, 1983)

SOMEONE IS BUILDING GTA 6 WITH A LOOP OF AI AGENTS AND JUST SWITCHED TO UNREAL ENGINE ON DAY 7 One full day of setup. Installed Unreal, fought it onto a Mac build, migrated the project and got a scene rendering with real lighting. First time it actually looks like GTA instead of a prototype of it.

LodgeNet N64 and GameCube controllers working on real Super Nintendo!! Straight wire! 🤯 Ends up that the recently dumped, mysterious SNES dev cart rom with a GameCube controller displayed on screen, is indeed a controller tester rom used to test LodgeNet controllers. I decompiled the rom and discovered that it was bit banging a custom controller protocol over the normal controller’s data and latch pins.

Maybe inspired by the synergy between the PlayStation and Namco’s arcade-compatible hardware, Sega also developed the Dreamcast and NAOMI together to make arcade-to-console ports much easier for their own games. Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.
