This man got pulled over for a traffic stop in another state while driving home. The officer asked him for his information, the man gave it to him. The officer came back, gave him the ticket, told him where to appear if he wanted to contest and pointed out where he could mail in the fee for the ticket since he didn’t live nearby. The man said okay. The officer asked if he had any questions, the man said no, the officer said be safe and that was that. So many people said that is a normal interaction with police officers. All the other stuff is someone seeking attention. 💯 It should be this easy every time. Kudos to both those men. 👏 When you do what you are asked to do, there is never a problem, imho. Is this how your traffic stops have went? (Mine did) Why can’t they all be like this for everyone?

NEW: Grand Rapids police officer suffers broken leg after passenger resisted extraction during traffic stop According to GRPD, during a traffic stop officers noticed the front-seat passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and repeatedly refused to provide identification or exit the vehicle. Officers ordered him out, but he continued resisting by bracing himself inside the car with his legs. During the struggle, officers struck the passenger until he exited, injuring an officer who suffered a broken leg and torn ligament. The passenger was booked into the Kent County Correctional Facility.

Sometimes the most dangerous situations start with something simple … like expired plates. ‼️ Yesterday just after 10 a.m., one of our traffic officers attempted to stop a driver of a pickup towing a trailer with years-old expired tags on southbound I-225 at East 17th Place. The driver had other ideas. And from there, you’ll see. Lives could have changed in an instant. Despite activating lights and siren, the driver not only refused to stop but also swerved toward our officer on his motorcycle. Thankfully, our officer was able to hit the brakes to avoid a collision, even after a large box flew off the back of the pickup.🚔 The suspect then blew through a red light, trying to evade our traffic officer who continued the pursuit undeterred despite nearly being run over. The suspect drove recklessly through the Fitzsimons Parkway area, at one point making another run at another responding officer while also weaving into oncoming traffic. When he crashed into a fence in the 1900 block of Akron Street, he tried to run. Spoiler alert: running rarely works. Thanks to a detailed description from the original motor officer and alert community members who saw him discarding clothing, officers quickly established a perimeter and located 39-year-old Kyle Secrist. Insolent even in his capture, the suspect had the audacity to ask approaching officers, “What did I do?” Secrist was detained without further incident and arrested for attempted homicide, driving with a revoked license, reckless driving, vehicular eluding and motor vehicle theft…did we forget to mention the pickup he was driving AND the trailer were both stolen? The suspect’s criminal history spans 20+ pages and includes dangerous drug offenses, parole violations, assault, burglary, menacing, habitual traffic offender and DUI offenses, and child abuse. Expired plates are fixable. Trying to run over a police officer is not.➡️ Our officers never know when a routine stop will turn into something more. They show up anyway. Officer safety is not just a talking point. It is real. It is unpredictable. And it is a risk our officers accept every day to keep this community safe. NEW: Garbage collector finds a wanted suspect in a trash can moments before he tossed the trash in the garbage truck. The suspect, who now has the nickname 'Oscar the Grouch,' was pulled over by a Huber Heights, Ohio, police officer during a traffic stop. When the vehicle stopped, the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jonathan McMillan, got out and fled. The officer lost sight of McMillan and set up a perimeter. Thanks to the sanitization worker, McMillan was discovered in the trash can. "Thanks to the impressive athletic ability and swift response of our very own Officer Perez, the suspect was safely apprehended," the police department said. McMillan was booked on obstructing official business and resisting arrest. He had a warrant from Miami County.

Officer gets upset at man that knows his rights so he packs up his toys and goes to sit in his squad car until another officer gets him to come out and finish the traffic stop. ​The driver, identified as Mr. Brewer, is pulled over for a standard nighttime headlight violation. He complies fully with the initial lawful demands—handing over his driver's license and proof of insurance. But once the officer has the necessary paperwork to write a fix-it ticket or a standard citation, the questions start drifting into unlawful territory. ​After processing the license, the officer asks Mr. Brewer for his phone number, followed by a request for his Social Security number. ​Mr. Brewer correctly draws the line here. While law enforcement can ask for voluntary information, they cannot legally compel a driver to hand over a Social Security number or phone number during a routine traffic infraction. As per usual the officer asks for ID and the man in truck went to work on this officer telling him this is an illegal stop as no crime has been committed so he is not required to provide ID. Through out the interaction he asks the officer if he is free to go and the officer doubles down on detainment. However at the same time when asked the officer was not able to articulate a crime. The man also asked for a sergeant and the officer never compiled by getting a supervisor on scene which honestly would have been the best move. There are two ways to look at this interaction. The eyes of the officer: The officer calmly maintains that the traffic stop is entirely lawful. In the United States, law enforcement needs reasonable suspicion to initiate a traffic stop. An obscured license plate or illegally dark window tint satisfies that standard in almost every jurisdiction. Furthermore, once a lawful traffic stop is initiated, a driver is legally required to produce a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration. The driver's perspective: The driver claims that his tags are legit and the officer was able to see that when he ran them. He argues that because the ranger claimed at first he could not see the tags but now he can as he approached the vehicle. This young man got stopped as soon as he drove away from his driving test. Kudos to how the officer handled the situation. When my son turned 16, I took him to drive the day before his test. He turned the wrong way on a quiet little one way for a few yards, stopped, and turned into a parking lot. A police officer saw it and wrote him a ticket. Even after hearing that we were practicing with a driver permit. I’ll never forget that.

After he was arrested in Dallas on May 30 for allegedly driving without a valid license, possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a firearm, a suspect in Texas decided to take the police wheel into his own hands. The incident happened after the suspect secretly removed his left hand from his handcuffs. When officers began driving to jail, the suspect attempted to open the squad car's rear door, prompting the officers to get out of the car, and eventually climbed into the driver’s seat and took off. One of the officers managed to jump into the backseat of the vehicle. That officer then attempted to stop the suspect by tasing him and striking him on the side of the head with his firearm. The suspect opened the driver’s side door and jumped out after driving what police said was a distance of about 1,000 feet. At that point, the police officer was able to regain control of the patrol car, and the suspect was given medical assistance before being taken back into custody, where he faces numerous charges.

This dude was pulled over for a headlight violation. During the stop the officer involved demands to see the ID of the passenger ( his wife). The response from the driver is no, she was not driving. The officer involved throws out that Alabama is a stop and ID state. (Alabama Code § 15-5-30:) This state law allows officers to demand the name, address, and an explanation from someone in a public place if they reasonably suspect the person is committing or about to commit a crime. The driver’s argument rests on the principle that while he (the driver) is required to provide a license for a traffic violation, a passenger typically does not have to provide identification unless there is "reasonable articulable suspicion" that they have committed a crime. The Driver’s Stance: He correctly asserts that as the driver, he is the one being investigated for the headlight, and since the passenger has not committed a violation, the officer's authority to demand her ID is limited. Also Social Security Request: The driver also challenges the officer's demand for his Social Security number, citing federal privacy protections. In short the driver schooled these officers which is why he is quickly sent on his way once they see he knows his rights.

Wanted: One Raccoon. Found: One Clingy Woodpecker. It’s National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week, and our JCSO Animal Control Officers continue to prove that no two calls are ever the same. This one started as a reported raccoon but turned out to be a woodpecker who then hitched a ride and declared the responding officer its personal tree. After plenty of laughs, the woodpecker eventually moved along and found a more suitable tree of its own. We’re proud of our Animal Control Officers for handling every call with professionalism, patience, and a sense of humor, because in this line of work, even the wildlife likes to keep things interesting.

Last week, one of our motor officers, who are all master level riders and operating 1250cc stallions, tried to stop an e-bike for riding reckless in traffic. The e-bike rider took off… from a motor. 🤦‍♂️ If trying to out maneuver us wasn’t challenging enough, the airship was overhead in two minutes. The rider eventually lost control, and as he tried to take off again, was dismounted and taken into custody. The rider turned out to be a teen who had a no bail warrant. He was booked on his warrant, reckless driving and felony evading.
