A 19-year-old girl graduated with honors from high school in Connecticut & she can’t read. 75% of students in 8th grade aren’t proficient in math & 70% aren’t proficient in reading. Our education system is failing miserably Black American is asked to read this simple sentence The only words she can read is the word ‘funding’ and a couple more but can’t read or even pronounce most of the other words Here are the English proficiency score percentages according to national data Elementary School - White students: ~35–40% proficient - Black students: ~15–20% proficient Middle School - White students: ~30–35% proficient - Black students: ~12–18% proficient High School - White students: ~35–40% proficient - Black students: ~15–20% proficient Now obviously there is a gap here where white students are twice as likely to be proficient at reading compared to black students but that’s not the point The point is nobody passes on average. Even at 40% that’s less than half our kids finishing high school proficient at English This is horrible

If DC were a state, it would have the number 1 murder rate in the country. Barely over 2/10 DC students are proficient in math. Is Mayor Bowser kidding? DC is not safe, the schools are terrible and people deserve better!

Only 1 out of every 4 Chicago Public Schools students can read at grade level, and only 17% are proficient in math. Since 2019, CPS’s budget has grown by more than 57% to over $9 billion, yet there has been no significant improvement in test scores. Just 21% of students in Chicago can read and do math at an eighth-grade proficiency level. At Douglas Academy High School, which has the capacity for more than 900 students, only 34 were enrolled in 2024. The school spent $68,091 per student, 3x the average, yet failed to produce a single student proficient in either math or English at grade level.

Valley View Elementary is only 17% proficient in reading and 15% proficient in math, according to Niche. Scoring a C- in academics and a C+ in teachers, the school received an A for diversity. The report card from Harrisburg is in and the results are alarming. Just 12% of Harrisburg High School students are proficient in reading. Only 2% are proficient in math. And science proficiency is just 3%. Our students deserve better. It’s time for Pennsylvania to opt-in to the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit and give families real options at getting a quality education.
