I tested Xpeng's VLA 2.0 in the streets of Beijing, and it is comparable to my experience of daily driving Tesla FSD v14. Xpeng is not charging $100 a month to drive this. I installed comma in my car Their tagline is “make driving chill” which is accurate! I have pretty good confidence relying on it to drive most of the time, feels way “chiller” than Tesla autopilot (I haven’t driven the new FSD) It’s awesome that you can self install (~30min) a $1450 device with 3 cameras from a company of ~20 ppl and mostly be able to let it drive for you. It taps into the cars existing driver assist system and takes it over. There are a bunch of different forks; I’ve been using Sunnypilot. It’s not plug and play and there is stuff to figure out but it’s INCREDIBLE what this little device and small team can do. It’s actually quite disappointing that it just isn’t built into most cars.

Bro… it’s 2026 and you’re still driving manually? I just press a button, and I don’t even remember how I got to my destination. If it was legal to do so, I’d be 100% comfortable closing my eyes and taking a nap the entire drive. It’s just the honest truth, I’m not hyping anything. Tesla FSD is really that good now. Tesla FSD has now driven more than 8 billion real world miles, including more than 3 billion city miles. In Tesla’s latest safety data, FSD logged about 1 major collision every 5.3 million miles, which Tesla says is about 7x fewer major collisions than the U.S. average. On top of this, Tesla FSD delivers 7x fewer minor collisions and 5x fewer off-highway collisions than the average. It’s significantly safer than anything out there. This AI system is learning from millions of Teslas out in the real world, not from geofenced areas, like literally anywhere a Tesla can drive. Tesla’s vehicles use 360 degree camera visibility, over-the-air updates, and has a neural net that keeps making the system smarter, safer, and better over time, for all Teslas. The FSD experience is so good now that manually driving already feels like the distant past. And once you’ve lived with what so many Tesla owners get to experience every day, going back to any other car feels almost impossible.

It’s really trying to drive the car in the same way that a human drives the car, primarily with vision and with a biological neural net. We take the same approach with our vehicles, which is a digital neural net and cameras. I expect this approach to ultimately be at least an order of magnitude safer than humans driving. It is quite magical because the car feels like it is sentient. It actually feels like it’s alive and you can actually, as we improve the software, feel the sentience growing in the car. After testing FSD v14 head-to-head against other top-tier intelligent driving systems, this Chinese defensive-driving instructor shared his takeaway: “After testing FSD, my conclusion is: this is the best overall experience among all the driver-assist systems I’ve tested. As someone who’s been a defensive-driving instructor for almost 20 years, I can say with full confidence that its anticipation and decision-making in the vast majority of complex road conditions is pretty much in line with my own driving habits — some of it is even identical. Throughout the whole process, my anxiety around needing to take over was extremely low. The occasional interventions and takeovers I did do were mostly because it wasn’t familiar with China’s laws, regulations, signs and markings, or with certain special road conditions. And some were takeovers just for the sake of efficiency. Based on my nearly 20 years of training and evaluating all kinds of professional and non-professional drivers, I can say that in the vast majority of scenarios, FSD’s decision quality and decision stability have already surpassed most experienced human drivers. And one more thing to note: it has no emotions. It never gets tired. It never gets distracted. And an algorithm that hasn’t even been specifically trained on Chinese road conditions yet — relying only on its underlying general-purpose risk perception and avoidance logic — has already managed, in most scenarios, to drive defensively like a veteran driver. This is a genuinely remarkable display of true end-to-end capability. Because true end-to-end learning isn’t about rules. It’s about the physical laws of the real world and the physiological patterns of humans. And this makes me really look forward to seeing how the official version of FSD performs once local training is complete. But I do have some concerns too. I’m also worried: once FSD starts training in China, whether it might pick up some of the bad driving habits of Chinese drivers. This mainly depends on Tesla’s data cleaning and filtering work. We’ll have to wait and see.”

It’s not going to be easy competing against Tesla’s Optimus. Just like no one’s been able to match Tesla’s FSD, this will be the same story. Only this time, it’s going to be even harder. Bc Tesla has everything integrated from AI training to hardware to real-world data, and Optimus is powered by the same FSD tech that’s already mastering real-world autonomy. No other company is this vertically integrated, it’s just that Tesla makes it look easy.
