🚨ODD SCORING ALERT🚨 I was also asked a few times about the Jake McCarthy inside the park home run against Paul Skenes in yesterday's Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates game (but not nearly as much as the Harper play). The question is why was this not a triole and... an error on the right fielder for kicking the ball. This was ruled a home run because slipping on the warning track and kicking the ball away, while unfortunate, is not considered an error. So, even though McCarthy would have only had a triple, the slip doesn't go as an error, so it's an insid-the-park home run. Also, had it been a triple and an error, it would have still been an earned run as Hunter Goodman's fly out to the warning track would have scored the runner from third. #LetsGoBucs #Rockiesshow more

This was originally scored a triple and an error, and almost immediately changed to an error on the right fielder and a throwing error on the center fielder. So this is the play Adam Jude and alexSSN are asking about. This is a correctly scored a fielder's choice because while the obvious thing is the fielder has to throw home (to prevent the winning run from scoring), the fielder can attempt to just get the out first and then go home. Young is obviously going to be out on this if the first baseman elected to get him out. So this is never a hit. As for balls that fall between fielders not being error, you have to remember Alex that an error is a mechanical misplay. You have to attempt to catch the ball and miss/drop it. When to guys look at each other and go "oops I thoiught you had it" and it falls between them, that's a hit because it's not an error as there is no drop or miss, because no one attempted the catch. Hope that makes sense.

Lots of folks wondering why the two plays to Oneil Cruz in the Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Mets game were recorded as hits. Here is the first one, and you can see he misjudges this line drive, and he comes in and then it sails over his head. MIsjudgement is NOT an error, so this correctly went down as a triple. Is it a ball that he needs to catch? Yes. Is it an error? No. An error is a physical misplay, and there is not a physicial misplay here. #LetsGoBucs #LGM

Wanted to see if this held, but this was ruled an error on the second baseman, and in no way, shape or form, is this an error. This is an infielder racing into the outfield, and this is almost a terrific catch. If you can see the infielder’s full number as she is running into the outfield, that means it’s above ordinary effort. There have been quite a few shaky calls in this #WCWS (as per the usual sadly) but this isn’t an error. Even the announcer went with calling it an error, but this is 100% a hit.

I mean, Toronto Blue Jays fans are annoyed now, but had any runs scored after this play today, which was ruled an error, they would have been really mad when this most likely gets changed to a hit, because this really isn't an error either. Third baseman is on the run, and throwing awkwardly on the run. If he properly sets he never gets Lopez, so you shouldn't penalize the fielder for doing everything he can to try to make the play. Now, no runs ended up scoring, but I suspect this will get appealed and changed, because this looks well above ordinary effort.

🚨CYCLE SCORING ALERT🚨 Tons of folks sent this one in from the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets game, with Bryce Harper completing the cycle with this fifth inning triple. I believe this was scored correctly as a triple. This falls under Rule 9.06; Determining the Value of Base Hits. The key is Harper never slowed down at all and was going for third the whole time. One of the things the scorer has to determine is whether or not Harper went to third on the throw or not. He obviously was going for third regardless, and the fact that he would have been out is inconsequential here. The OS Manual states this: “Had the bases been empty, would the batter-runner have attempted to advance the extra base? If not, the value of the base hit should not include the additional base.” The answer on this one is yes, Harper would have ATTEMPTED to advance. Doesn’t say if he would have been safe. Since he would have attempted this regardless of the throw home, he was, IMHO, correctly credited with a triple.

Against the Red Sox today, the Rockies did the very difficult thing of grounding into a force out that was also a sacrifice fly. It's true. With one out and the bases loaded, Cole Carrigg lined a ball to right that was dropped by Wilyer Abreu. Tyler Freeman was tagging up, and he scored, but Hunter Goodman was hung up and thrown out on a force play at second. However, this still goes as a sacrifice fly for Carrigg. That's because of Rule 9.08(d) Comment: "The Official Scorer shall score a sacrifice fly in accordance with Rule 9.08(d)(2) even though another runner is forced out by reason of the batter becoming a runner." 🚨CONFIRMED NON-CHANGE🚨 I can now confirm that Cincinnati Reds JJ Bleday's appeal for a hit against Milwaukee Brewers was denied, and the original ruling of a missed catch error was upheld, meaning the four runs in the inning scored against Jacob Misiorowski will stay unearned. As a reminder, the play made by the third baseman was well above ordinary effort, but since he had a good, on-target throw to first, the only issue is whether the first baseman, Jake Bauers, dropped the ball/missed the catch. While it is extremely close, the ruling is that Bauers could have caught the ball a millisecond before Bleday hit the base (which you can see in the screen capture). Now, Bauers also played this poorly in that he is on the back side of the bag, and he is not stretched out properly to receive the ball, but that isn't really used in this. The question is: did he drop the ball or miss the catch in a way that, had he caught it, the batter would have been out, and the answer to that, for the committee, is yes, he would have been out. Since the ball hit the glove before the foot hit the base (as many pointed out), it's an error. In the end, they upheld the decision of the scorer, which is, in my mind, the correct decision by the committee. #ATOBTTR #ThisIsMyCrew

We ran the ball pretty good yesterday but there was more hay to be had. Gainwell has been a godsend for this team and offense. All he does is produce, but he missed one here on the first run play of the game. This is an example of how an OL can block something up as intended, and it still not get the yardage it should, due to timing and patience. It got better as the game went on. Importance of sticking with the run…especially in December/January. #HereWeGo

So on one hand, Rust doesn't really use exceptions, so it actually returns the error as a value. So you return a value that's, using an enum, either the result or the error. And the way this is done is that there's an operator `?` - so you write: my_function and then a question mark at the end - which means if this function fails, return the error. So it's really easy to handle errors but it's not serial characters like it is with exceptions, so it's explicit. On the other hand, if you forget to put the question mark, that's a compilation error. So you have to check it, and of course you can also have it manually, but the point is it's this idea of there are these things where you write some code and there's some implicit error condition you didn't think of and now you just took down your server or something.”
