If you can see the infielder’s full number as she is running into the outfield, that means it’s above ordinary effort. There have been quite a few shaky calls in this #WCWS (as per the usual sadly) but this isn’t an error. Even the announcer went with calling it an error, but this is 100% a hit.

This is from today's #WCWS game. This was ruled a base hit when it happened (you can see the 'H' pop up), but was changed to a missed catch error by the first baseman at the bottom of the fourth. This is an impossible catch for the first baseman with a ball thrown from that angle, that hard. This throw has to be to the glove, and while it's not a wild throw, it's low enough that the first baseman cannot get her glove around it in time. This is where replay gets you in trouble. The slo-mo replay makes it look like it's a catchable ball, but it isn't. In real time, at live speed, this isn't an error. This isn't a missed catch or a drop. I was loving the call of a single, especially because it was the first hit, and then, when it was changed, it felt like it was to protect a no-hitter. Everything about this screams "above ordinary effort" ... I would have left this as a single.

I mean, Toronto Blue Jays fans are annoyed now, but had any runs scored after this play today, which was ruled an error, they would have been really mad when this most likely gets changed to a hit, because this really isn't an error either. Third baseman is on the run, and throwing awkwardly on the run. If he properly sets he never gets Lopez, so you shouldn't penalize the fielder for doing everything he can to try to make the play. Now, no runs ended up scoring, but I suspect this will get appealed and changed, because this looks well above ordinary effort.

So this is the play Adam Jude and alexSSN are asking about. This is a correctly scored a fielder's choice because while the obvious thing is the fielder has to throw home (to prevent the winning run from scoring), the fielder can attempt to just get the out first and then go home. Young is obviously going to be out on this if the first baseman elected to get him out. So this is never a hit. As for balls that fall between fielders not being error, you have to remember Alex that an error is a mechanical misplay. You have to attempt to catch the ball and miss/drop it. When to guys look at each other and go "oops I thoiught you had it" and it falls between them, that's a hit because it's not an error as there is no drop or miss, because no one attempted the catch. Hope that makes sense.

This was originally scored a triple and an error, and almost immediately changed to an error on the right fielder and a throwing error on the center fielder. 🚨WEIRD PLAY ALERT🚨 This is really crazy from the Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs. Ian Happ is on second, Nico Hoerner on first. Hoerner is back-picked and gets into a rundown. Happ goes and takes third and attempts to score, and a rundown ensues there. Happ runs into the third basemanColson Montgomery and scores. This is correctly ruled an obstruction error on Mongtomery as Happ ran into him and he didn't have the ball. But there are is SO MUCH MORE. You credit assists to the catcher (Edgar Quero), first baseman (Miguel Vargas), second baseman (Lenyn Sosa) and pitcher (Mike Vasil). What needs to be determined is this ... Hoerner is picked off, but both runners successfully advanced a base, and based on the OS Manual, I think both should get a stolen base. Happ's advancement of home would NOT have been a stolen base, so it cannot be a caught stealing, and the defense abandoned the attempt to get Hoerner out. Had Happ tried to take home because it was undefended, then this would be a caught stealing, but he's not doing that. He also didn't overslide to third and wasn't able to get back so he attempted to escape by going forward. Happ however, once he went to third (and that's where the initial throw from the first baseman should have went ... he was dead to rights) he never hesitated in trying to score. Honestly, this is going to keep the Elias Sports Bureau folks awake tonight, but I think this is a stolen base for each guy. This is a tricky one.

Ok, I'm not gonna lie, it's plays like this that make me question having my DMs open. It's obvious the folks asking me about this play in the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers game are either daily fantasy players, or gamblers, so I'll use this as an educational post. This is NEVER an error. This play where Brice Matthews is on the dead run, leaping to save a home run, and nearly making a SportsCenter Top-10 (this would have been No. 1) play is NOT an error. This is way, way, way beyond ordinary effort. An error is a dropping of the ball or a misplay in which the average fielder is expected to make the physical catch at that position, using ordinary effort. There is nothing ordinary about this. This is ALWAYS a hit. ALWAYS.

Man oh man did I get a oot of messages about this one ... I see how folks think this is a hit, and it is hit hard (97.4 EV) ... but I can totally see how the scorer ruled this an error. I also know similar plays have been changed, so I'm sure Bleday will appeal.

This was ruled a home run because slipping on the warning track and kicking the ball away, while unfortunate, is not considered an error. So here is the YES Network broadcast with Michael Kay, and this really isn’t a great look for Michael. You cannot talk in the sixth inning about how this should have been a hit and be surprised that an error was posted, and then get mad when this was correctly fixed between the seventh and eighth. Michael talked about how once the Tampa Bay Rays got a cleaner hit this would get changed because it should have been scored a hit all along. Good on the scorer for swallowing his pride and making sure he got this right. It’s easy to make a mistake (we all make them) but it would have been really easy to wait for a hit and THEN change it. I normally never mention the scorer but since they showed and named him on the broadcast, good on Bill for realizing that this needed changed and doing it BEFORE another hit. Also New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said postgame that he knew it was a hit and was surprised at the E3 ruling, which makes Kay’s ranting here look a little sillier. #RepBX #RaysUp

The hometown scorekeeper absolutely bailed out Matt Chapman on that play. That should have been ruled a throwing error, no question, but instead it’s scored as a hit—and now Adrian Houser is the one who pays for it. If that runner had scored, it would’ve gone down as an earned run, which is completely unfair given the play should have been an error. This is exactly the kind of hometown scoring that drives people crazy. It feels like protecting a name more than calling the game honestly. Chapman already has a few errors this season, and instead of holding him accountable with a fourth, the scorekeeper flips it into a hit and sticks the pitcher with the damage. That’s not scoring—that’s politics.

🚨POTENTIAL APPEAL ALERT🚨 This is from today's Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals game, and the scorer is going with above ordinary effort for this ball hit to Trea Turner. Watching this play, Turner slides and comes up with it and rushes the throw, but the question is, did he have to rush it? Andres Chapparo got down the line in 4.96 seconds, which for him is fast, but overall, is NOT fast as all. Here is what the manual says about a misplay due to rushing. "If a fielder fails to make an otherwise ordinary play because he rushes unnecessarily, the Official Scorer must determine whether the fielder should have realized he did not have to rush. If the Official Scorer believes the fielder should have realized he did not have to rush, the play should be scored an error. If the Official Scorer believes it would have been difficult for the fielder to know how much time he had given the nature of the play, then no error should be charged." I think Turner knows who is running, because he felt comforatable lobbing the ball off his back foot, but he, IMO, had time, so I have this as an error. This led to all four runs in the inning being earned for Luzardo, instead of unearned, so there is ZERO change he isn't appealing this, as a change here would mean nearly half a run off his ERA. #RingTheBell #NATITUDE

MLB has ruled this play from Ryan's June 30 start in Houston an error on Royce Lewis instead of a hit. The ground ball should have ended the inning with a double play and 0 runs allowed, but the misplay by Lewis opened the door for a six-run #Astros rally. Here is the play in question by Ryan, and as much as this is obvious that the catcher didn't secure this ... the rule in place for scorers is if a thorw BOUNCES, it is a throwing error. I do not like applying this in this type of instance on a throw from the outfield, but right now that's how the rule reads. Only the committee can change it on appeal, and they would have to do that against the writter rule (to the consternation of those in charge I'm certain). But letter of the law ... the throwing error is correct.
