🚨WEIRD PLAY ALERT🚨 This is from tonight's Atlanta Braves at Miami Marlins game. This was originally scored a triple and an error, and almost immediately changed to an error on the right fielder and a throwing error on the center fielder. The original error on the rright fielder was for colliding with the center fielder as it looked like he had the ball. However, this was changed back to a triple and an error, as you have both fielders on a dead sprint back into right center. It's obvious the folks asking me about this play in the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers game are either daily fantasy players, or gamblers, so I'll use this as an educational post. This is NEVER an error. This play where Brice Matthews is on the dead run, leaping to save a home run, and nearly making a SportsCenter Top-10 (this would have been No. 1) play is NOT an error. This is way, way, way beyond ordinary effort. An error is a dropping of the ball or a misplay in which the average fielder is expected to make the physical catch at that position, using ordinary effort. There is nothing ordinary about this. This is ALWAYS a hit. ALWAYS.

This is from today's #WCWS game. This was ruled a base hit when it happened (you can see the 'H' pop up), but was changed to a missed catch error by the first baseman at the bottom of the fourth. This is an impossible catch for the first baseman with a ball thrown from that angle, that hard. This throw has to be to the glove, and while it's not a wild throw, it's low enough that the first baseman cannot get her glove around it in time. This is where replay gets you in trouble. The slo-mo replay makes it look like it's a catchable ball, but it isn't. In real time, at live speed, this isn't an error. This isn't a missed catch or a drop. I was loving the call of a single, especially because it was the first hit, and then, when it was changed, it felt like it was to protect a no-hitter. Everything about this screams "above ordinary effort" ... I would have left this as a single.

Lots of folks wondering why the two plays to Oneil Cruz in the Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Mets game were recorded as hits. Here is the first one, and you can see he misjudges this line drive, and he comes in and then it sails over his head. MIsjudgement is NOT an error, so this correctly went down as a triple. Is it a ball that he needs to catch? Yes. Is it an error? No. An error is a physical misplay, and there is not a physicial misplay here. #LetsGoBucs #LGM

Here is the play in question by Ryan, and as much as this is obvious that the catcher didn't secure this ... the rule in place for scorers is if a thorw BOUNCES, it is a throwing error. I do not like applying this in this type of instance on a throw from the outfield, but right now that's how the rule reads. Only the committee can change it on appeal, and they would have to do that against the writter rule (to the consternation of those in charge I'm certain). But letter of the law ... the throwing error is correct.

I mean, Toronto Blue Jays fans are annoyed now, but had any runs scored after this play today, which was ruled an error, they would have been really mad when this most likely gets changed to a hit, because this really isn't an error either. Third baseman is on the run, and throwing awkwardly on the run. If he properly sets he never gets Lopez, so you shouldn't penalize the fielder for doing everything he can to try to make the play. Now, no runs ended up scoring, but I suspect this will get appealed and changed, because this looks well above ordinary effort.

In Rust, error handling is opt-out, not opt-in. Alice Ryhl (Rust for Android at Google, Rust language advisor & Tokio maintainer) explains: “The other thing I think is quite good is error handling. So on one hand, Rust doesn't really use exceptions, so it actually returns the error as a value. So you return a value that's, using an enum, either the result or the error. The hometown scorekeeper absolutely bailed out Matt Chapman on that play. That should have been ruled a throwing error, no question, but instead it’s scored as a hit—and now Adrian Houser is the one who pays for it. If that runner had scored, it would’ve gone down as an earned run, which is completely unfair given the play should have been an error. This is exactly the kind of hometown scoring that drives people crazy. It feels like protecting a name more than calling the game honestly. Chapman already has a few errors this season, and instead of holding him accountable with a fourth, the scorekeeper flips it into a hit and sticks the pitcher with the damage. That’s not scoring—that’s politics.

So this is the play Adam Jude and alexSSN are asking about. This is a correctly scored a fielder's choice because while the obvious thing is the fielder has to throw home (to prevent the winning run from scoring), the fielder can attempt to just get the out first and then go home. Young is obviously going to be out on this if the first baseman elected to get him out. So this is never a hit. As for balls that fall between fielders not being error, you have to remember Alex that an error is a mechanical misplay. You have to attempt to catch the ball and miss/drop it. When to guys look at each other and go "oops I thoiught you had it" and it falls between them, that's a hit because it's not an error as there is no drop or miss, because no one attempted the catch. Hope that makes sense.

This was ruled a home run because slipping on the warning track and kicking the ball away, while unfortunate, is not considered an error. Man oh man did I get a oot of messages about this one ... I see how folks think this is a hit, and it is hit hard (97.4 EV) ... but I can totally see how the scorer ruled this an error. I also know similar plays have been changed, so I'm sure Bleday will appeal.

So here is the video of Baltimore Orioles Jackson Holliday's at bat in the sixth inning that was ruled an throwing error on 3B Logan Davidson. Now, not sure why folks are threatening me to change this (I don't change these things, I just report on them), but while Holliday is hustling down the line, the scorer sees this as ordinary effort for the third baseman, and if he doesn't bounce the throw Soderstrom keeps his foot on the bag and Holliday is out. I see this as an appeal for Holliday, but I'd be a little surprised if it changes because Davidson clearly sets himself, he isn't throwing on the run or anything. #Birdland #Athletics

Do you know what I love more than anything? Being right and having things to back it up. For Chris, I present a pop-up to an infielder in foul territory who is not running into the outfield in foul territory, he is just in four territory. The ball is caught, the runner on third tags and scores. As you can plainly see, the batter was NOT credited with a sacrifice fly. Now, I asked about this, and was told by the powers that be that this was the 100% correct scoring on this play because it didn't meet the criteria of an infielder running into the outfield in fair or foul territory. I hope that ends it. Honestly, any more arguing and I'll just assume you just want to be stubborn and not admit that I have this and you don't (which is fine, this is my area of expertise, not yours).

The only error there could be is a missed catch error on Bauers at first, but this sure looks like Bleday has this play beat at first. This is purely a judgment call from the scorer, and I’m sure it is being discussed, but if he thinks Bleday is out, the error is correct, making the four runs in the inning unearned to Jacob Misiorowski. If he thinks the play would have been a single if he held onto it, all four runs are earned. I’m sure Bleday will appeal for a hit, because I thought he was safe regardless. But, this is a complete judgment call by the scorer in Milwaukee. #ATOBTTR #ThisIsMyCrew

🚨POTENTIAL APPEAL ALERT🚨 This is from today's Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals game, and the scorer is going with above ordinary effort for this ball hit to Trea Turner. Watching this play, Turner slides and comes up with it and rushes the throw, but the question is, did he have to rush it? Andres Chapparo got down the line in 4.96 seconds, which for him is fast, but overall, is NOT fast as all. Here is what the manual says about a misplay due to rushing. "If a fielder fails to make an otherwise ordinary play because he rushes unnecessarily, the Official Scorer must determine whether the fielder should have realized he did not have to rush. If the Official Scorer believes the fielder should have realized he did not have to rush, the play should be scored an error. If the Official Scorer believes it would have been difficult for the fielder to know how much time he had given the nature of the play, then no error should be charged." I think Turner knows who is running, because he felt comforatable lobbing the ball off his back foot, but he, IMO, had time, so I have this as an error. This led to all four runs in the inning being earned for Luzardo, instead of unearned, so there is ZERO change he isn't appealing this, as a change here would mean nearly half a run off his ERA. #RingTheBell #NATITUDE
