This AIST humanoid demo is worth studying. The robot handles a large construction panel keeps balance aligns the sheet against the wall frame and uses a power tool in a real workspace setup. Slow movement. Controlled demo. Still a serious look at where humanoid robots could matter first. Construction tasks need reach force control balance tool use and recovery when the object shifts. That is exactly why humanoids are hard.

Who can say no to a humanoid robot that can actually feel a hug? 🤖 JQ Industries just built a fabric-based electronic skin for Unitree G1 — covering the torso, hands, and feet. This is not about appearance. It’s about giving robots real tactile sensing and pressure feedback. According to the company, the system includes tactile gloves, upper-body skin, and foot sensors. That means the robot can feel contact through its hands, detect pressure across its body, and use foot feedback to adjust balance. This is the missing layer in most humanoids. Vision alone can’t handle physical interaction. Robots need touch to grip safely, react to humans, and stay stable in real-world environments. JQ says its fiber sensors can detect forces as low as 0.01N, handle up to 3500kPa, and bend below 0.1mm radius. People often ask how did the Unitree robots get so good all of a sudden. It wasn't all of a sudden, and it's because they ship their hardware and open source their SDKs. Arguably these robots are nearly useless out of the box, but you have full dev control of them. Because of that, the hardware has become a very popular R&D platform with an ecosystem around it and the Unitree G1 is undoubtedly an order of magnitude better than it could ever be at this point if Unitree was instead just doing quiet internal dev of both the hardware and software. Too many hardware companies for really cool products that seek to be community-driven (robots, AR glasses...etc) desire to make a profitable walled garden and their greed just ends up walling out developers and their product gets outpaced by the G1s of the world.

Researchers at the RAI Institute have developed a new system called ReLIC that makes this easier. Instead of giving robots fixed roles for arms and legs, ReLIC lets them switch roles on the fly, for example, using a leg to help lift something while balancing on the others. This approach is more natural, similar to how humans use different body parts together without thinking about it. ReLIC was tested on a four-legged robot, which successfully performed tasks like moving boxes, opening drawers, and placing items into containers.

Amazon FAR’s LadderMan learns ladder climbing in simulation, transfers zero-shot to a real Unitree G1, and supports stable on-ladder manipulation under tight ladder constraints. The demo: climb, stabilize, adjust a wall painting, hand off a box from a high shelf, tighten a light bulb. That last part matters because ladders are brutal for humanoids: sparse footholds, limited handholds, noisy depth, and almost no margin for balance errors. This is what real human spaces actually demand — not just flat floors.
