Humanoids need a single, generalist control policy for all of their physical tasks, not a new one for every new chore or demo. A policy for walking can't dance. A policy for dancing can't support mowing the lawn. We need to scale up humanoid control for diverse behaviors, just like we did with language and video models. There’s no empty runway and no perfectly controlled path - the machine has to keep moving while the world around it does whatever it wants. That makes a few seconds of walking far more interesting than another polished stage demo. A city is one of the hardest places to test a humanoid because nothing stays predictable for long. People stop, cars move, distances change and obstacles appear without warning, while the robot still has to maintain balance and choose where to step next. The challenge isn't simply walking anymore - it's understanding how to move through a world that wasn't designed for robots. And that's the real milestone here. Humanoids don't need to look perfectly human to change the world; they need to become capable of functioning in spaces already built for us. The closer they get to doing that reliably, the less important the laboratory demos become. The future won't feel futuristic because robots look human. Yesterday, I passed by a subway entrance in Guangzhou and experienced a retail kiosk operated by a humanoid robot again, buying a bottle of water. The process was the same: select items on a screen, scan a QR code for mobile payment, and the humanoid robot retrieves the product. (However, it didn't interact with me at all.) I looked it up, and the wheeled humanoid robot is named S1, from AutoLife Robotics in Shenzhen. It uses omnidirectional wheels for movement and a lifting body. It's 1-1.6m tall, weighs 72kg, and has a 10-hour battery life. A single arm can carry 3-5kg. Furthermore, this humanoid robot is suitable for lightweight tasks in retail, convenience stores, supermarkets, and warehouse sorting.

On the robot, he's sticking with 2027 for a demo but not for anything walking around. "I think we'll have a cool demo in 2027, like a great demo. I don't think that there will be like robots walking the streets for a few years longer, but we'll have something impressive."

For this task, why not use a 6-axis robot on a linear axis? It would likely be: * Faster. * More precise. * More stable. * Much cheaper. So why the humanoid? Because BMW isn’t optimizing this task. They’re training Physical AI. Every successful grasp, every failure, every unexpected situation becomes data that teaches robots to handle the real world. That’s the real investment. The demo is impressive. The business case? I’m not convinced… yet. Are we looking at the future of manufacturing—or the world’s most expensive AI training program?
