THE LADDER VS THE CHAIR One of the ways I like to explain salvation is with the difference between a ladder and a chair. Too many people think getting right with God is like climbing a ladder — do more good, try harder, be better, get more committed and maybe you’ll make it to the top. As a matter of fact EVERY world religion has a ladder approach to their view of salvation. You work your way to heaven by climbing various rungs to God. Every religion has the same ladder approach, but with different rungs (7 sacraments of Catholicism, 8 fold path of Buddhism, 10 Commandments of Judaism, 5 pillars of Islam, etc.) And, sadly, many Protestants have developed their own ladder approach to God as well (turn, try, cry, commit, surrender, get baptized, etc.) But the RUNG approach is the WRONG approach. Only true Christianity recognizes this. Only true Christianity views salvation as a chair and not a ladder. You don’t try to climb a chair. You simply sit in it and trust it to hold you. In the same way, we can’t earn our salvation (climb the ladder to heaven), we simply rest on what Jesus did for us on the cross. We transfer our trust from our own efforts to his finished work on the cross and, then, we are saved! He gives us eternal life as a free gift through simple faith in Christ and then he begins the transformation process in us. The Bible makes this clear: 📖 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8–9 📖 “he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit…” Titus 3:5 The ladder says: achieve. Jesus says: believe. Stop trying to climb your way to God. Put your full weight on Christ and rest on what He’s already done on your behalf on the cross. This is the good news of the Gospel. This work makes a humanoid robot do simple parkour moves by looking with a depth camera and choosing the right move on the fly. The big deal is that it turns lots of small human moves into long, real-time robot behavior, without hand-coding every transition or retraining for each new course. A humanoid robot is usually good at steady walking, but it often fails when it has to do fast moves like jumping up, vaulting, or rolling, and then keep going to the next obstacle. The hard part is that you cannot easily collect training data for every possible obstacle shape, distance, and mistake, so robots end up learning a few moves that only work in a narrow setup. This work starts from short clips of real human parkour moves, like stepping over, vaulting, climbing, and rolling. It uses motion matching, which is basically a smart “pick the next clip that fits best right now” search, to stitch those short clips into a long, smooth plan that looks like a human doing a whole course. Then it trains a controller with reinforcement learning (RL), which means the robot learns by trial and error to copy that plan while staying balanced and not falling. After training separate expert controllers for different moves, it compresses them into 1 controller that uses only onboard depth sensing and a simple “go this fast in this direction” command. In real tests on a Unitree G1 humanoid, it can clear multiple obstacles in a row, adapt when obstacles get moved, and climb a wall up to 1.25m.

Not a preplanned motion sequence. A robot deciding mid-jump what to do next. [📍 paper + demo] Researchers just showed a humanoid doing real parkour using only onboard perception. No motion script, no fixed obstacle layout. The system is called Perceptive Humanoid Parkour (PHP). Instead of memorizing a path, the robot reads depth from its cameras and continuously chooses actions. Step, vault, climb, or roll depending on what geometry appears in front of it. To make that possible, they combine three ideas: First, they stitch together human motion clips into long movement references so the robot learns fluid transitions instead of isolated tricks. Second, they train tracking policies with reinforcement learning so contacts land at the right time and the robot keeps balance during dynamic moves. Finally, everything is distilled into one perception policy that runs directly from depth input to action selection. The result on a Unitree G1: about 3 m/s vaults wall climbs up to 1.25 m nearly one minute continuous obstacle traversal adapting when obstacles move What matters is not the tricks. It is the shift in capability. Earlier humanoids executed motions. This one navigates situations. Once robots react to geometry instead of replaying trajectories, environments stop needing to be predictable. Warehouses, homes, and outdoors suddenly become the same problem. How much the studio’s behind it, which other movies the studio’s releasing at the same time—I think Disney had nine or ten in release at the same time—how much energy is put into it. Who knows. It’s always been a mystery to me. 'Jacob’s Ladder' (1990) came out at a time when it was just not right for that movie to be seen. We were about to go into the Gulf War, and the country did not want to see a movie about a Vietnam veteran involved in drug experiments when, as the movie’s playing in theaters, we are inoculating Gulf War soldiers with anthrax. I got a letter from one guy that resisted—he got put in a brig because he would not take the drugs. He said, “Thank you, because I saw Jacob’s Ladder before I left, and it gave me the strength to resist.” And now they’ve found out that a lot of these soldiers got sick from these vaccines, with this Gulf War Syndrome. That movie found its audience in video and cable, and it was huge. And then you see movies that somehow hit the zeitgeist, make tons of money, are huge hits, and then you see them a few years later and you go, “What? What did I see in this? Why is this not working?” Certainly you can’t judge the success of a film based on its initial box office. You have to wait ten years, see it again. If it still works, it’s a great film. There’s a lot of great films that didn’t do well in their initial release. 'It’s a Wonderful Life' (1946) was a bomb. 'Citizen Kane' (1941) didn’t do well. 'Shawshank Redemption' (1994)."
